I was looking in a topic and i saw ppl talking about Show and In Orange and I was wondering what everyones favourite live album is. Mine is probabaly Paris because of the amazing versions of Figurehead, Lovesong, Catch, A Letter to Elise, Charlotte Sometimes, and Close to Me that i actually like more than the studio versions
Wow... too tough to tell. Today, it's Show/Paris (I count them as one and the same... two parts of a whole). Then again, I love them all... although "Concert" probably gets the least play. The best parts of Show are the guitar-centric tracks, where you have an electric, an acoustic (or another electric), and the baritone guitar... and then of course the bass. Unstuck, Cut and Never Enough stand out...
...even if Porl is WAAAAY too low in the mix.
But please, since videos/DVDs are also considered here then let's include Live In Japan 1984 too !
i might be the only person that really does prefer 'live in japan' over 'in orange' - i admit i've probably watched 'in orange' shamelessly little. it never really managed to compel me quite that much as it did many others. but i've watched 'live in japan' quite a lot... even in the old days when i had nothing but that horrendous, awfully generated, almost unwatchable vhs copy of it. :P anyway, i always liked the atmosphere of that video a lot.
but it's a though question indeed: i've probably seen 'show' too many times by now to be able to rightfully appreciate and/or compare it with the others. 'paris' was always one of my favorites though, maybe listened to it more than 'show'.
'entreat' would be great if it wasn't that short...
hmm....
Entreat, because every song on it is played wonderfully.
I would shit myself if they ever released the three nights at Wembley in '89.
How 'bout it, Robert?
I guess we're talking "official live albims" here?
I would go for Entreat, as I was there, so it is a great memory for me.
I saw an internet petition a while back for releasing the 3rd night officially.
It's obviously been committed to tape somewhere, so to have that little beauty see the light of day would be something to be more than happy about.
Ho hum.
Maybe they'll surprise us when the Disintegration re-master comes to fruition..... ;)
well the petition for wembley has been going on for ages and ages...
so far we haven't really seem anything... hmm.

i don't want to sound overly pessimistic/negative but i'd be really disppointed if they decide to put a few tracks from wembley soundboard on the 'disintegration' remaster, just like those few tracks on the KMKMKM remaster - that's just so annoying. they are there just to let us all know that they have the tapes but still they are throwing us these teasers only... gggrrr! :smth011
well i have rather little faith left that the wembley sounboard will ever be released officially. and so i actually hope there will be no live tracks at all on the 'disintegration' remaster.
so @robert: please put in some demos & outtakes only will you? i just can't take these "one track from here and a couple from there" sort of compilations...!
Anyone got "his" email address?
:-D
I think it would be worthwhile to recirculate the Wembley petition -- it's been a long time since it was really well-known. Perhaps resubmit it to CoF, that newer fans might sign?
Re-submitted here & on ceho.
:-D
Entreat for me too, totally agree about the 3 or 4 live tracks tacked on at the end of the reissues, would much rather they stuck to demos and outtakes and then released official live CD's like many other bands have done in the past :rocker
the only ones i have at the moment are concert, orange, play out (which isnt really a live album) (thanks to david for orange and play out :-D) and festival. il pick the rest up after ive gotten faith, wish and the cure and join the dots. ive slowed down my buying so i wont have to wait as long for new cure materials before a new album, wish is next i think
maybe theyll reissue Paris and Entreat with the full concert sets

because: how could their ever reissue paris or entreat "with full concert sets" when both were already compilations from several nights (three shows on wembley '89, three shows in paris '92) - and all those nights had different set lists!
please read the discussion in the thread above - i'll also save some time typing it again! ;)

no idc its fine... What i meant by full sets is just like all the different songs played arranged like one concert. like what they did with festival 2005 only with 3 concerts instead of 8
ok sure, i see what you mean.
anyway, i wouldn't like any more compilations than necessary. i'd rather have one complete gig instead if i could choose - even though it might have it's ups and downs there. but in this case i think i'd prefer and appreciate the authenticity of it.
for instance, since everyone's been wishing for the band to release the 3rd night of wembley (with the ever on-going petition and everything) then i'd be pretty annoyed if they choose to put out some compilation instead, that some sort of "super wembley show" with all the best tracks and greatest takes etc. hey that would be really mean! :smth011
i guess, maybe the best possible thing would be a soundboard leak of those Wembeley and Zenith nights
Trilogy!!!!!
I choose the ' PARIS' because I attended the 3 Parisian concerts of the group.... and I find that this recording transmits the environment which had at the time of these evenings.....
:D
Trilogy, no doubt!
The others are very good concerts, with very good setlists, but trilogy is absolutely fantastic!
:rocker
TRILOGY
TIGHTEST AND MOST PERFECT CURE CONCERT I EVER HEARD!!!
:smth023
I adore TRILOGY, don't get me wrong, but THE SAME DEEP WATER AS YOU is ruined for me, because Robert's voice just can't manage it anymore. Or maybe he doesn't want to sing it the way he used to. Or.... PLAINSONG hurts me too.
there's surely a certain special kind fo majesty on trilogy that one cannot find on other live dvds/videos, for instance on 2005 festival dvd. in this respect, it's a well-done production.
and yet, it's so badly mixed (well that's something in common with the festival dvd - he)
i have a special place in my heart for a few tracks on trilogy, maybe the most for 'homesick'. but i can't remember when i bothered watching all through it last time - probably never. :P
i do tend to skip a LOT of songs if i start watching it. my top three selection might be 'a short term effect', 'fascination street' and 'homesick' - after those i sometimes might call it a day....
2002 was a great year but what comes to my favorites simply in terms of performance, i actually do prefer some TV broadcasts/even some audience filmed stuff from other shows over 'trilogy'. for instance, the MCM Tv broadcast for carhaix 2002 - maybe one of my all time favorite videos. too bad they didn't broadcast any more songs!
The entire Pornography set is great. Right out of the gates, 100 Years just explodes, and yes A Short Term Effect is pretty kickass as well. I think I'll have to put that on right now, when I do dishes/cook. I especially like the "See you in seven years" at the end of it...
As for the other sets, I think I watched the Disintegration set once or twice start-to-finish.
The Bloodflowers set, seeing it played in its entirety, is what really made the album "click" in my head, and I've liked it ever since. As I said in another thread, it wasn't until after Trilogy that I really got to like the album. (I still think the title is lame, but whatever.)
edit: Watching the Pornography set now. Still love it. The Hanging Garden is great. Especially the simple little keyboard bits... The heavy chord at the start of each stanza (well, verse or chorus), and the noodling about in the background...
I don't know why they didn't put the Trilogy out as a 3CD set. Or better, a 4CD set, with all of the non-Trilogy songs played in the encores and on November 9th.
it really felt like festival was just knocked or some quick cash before christmas when i watched, ive never watched all the way through just in parts.
:smth020
MY POINT WAS THAT ON TRILOGY YOU HAVE THE BEST LINE UP THE CURE EVER HAD AND THE FACT IS I DONT BELIVE THEY WILL EVER GET THAT GOOD!!!
ROBERT
SIMON
ROGER
PERRY
JASON

there, I said it!

for me: please no more roger thank you very much - please, no more tambourines!! :x
roger never really fit into the band: he's surely not a bad musician but his style is clearly not what the classic cure keyboard style is/craves.

Same here. Sometimes I do catch myself thinking of him as "the new guy" -- but he's been in the band for ~12 years!
I think the only problem with Jason is that he's not Boris -- then again,
no one is Boris.. Other than that, I think he's just great.
If Jason would just drum One Hundred Years without the tape, I'd think a lot more of him. And I understand that he's got huge shoes to fill -- Boris is an incredible drummer.
I definitely wouldn't call the Bloodflowers line-up The Cure's best -- I think that title belongs to the Disintegration or Wish line-ups -- but they were certainly very talented.
And I don't get the Roger hate. Sure, the tambourine stuff was beyond lame, but would you rather have him ruin a keyboardless song by putting on keys?
TRILOGY is certainly an experience, and it is second on my list, behind ENTREAT. Still excellent, no question, but I do feel some songs were overdone, particularly the PORNOGRAPHY songs. They seem to have been altered to fit in better with the DISINTEGRATION and BLOODFLOWERS stuff; and while that works well, and it really is very well done, I think I prefer the less tame, more wild versions played in earlier concerts (CONCERT, in particular, has one of my favourite versions of ONE HUNDRED YEARS).
Trilogy! There is nothing like it!
JASON GETS :smth023 :smth023 FROM ME EVERY TIME!

WELL, I DONT KNOW WHAT WAS IN ROBERTS MIND AT THE TIME!
WAS HE AIMING FOR THREE PIECE SOUND?!
WAS HE ABOUT TO DO THE TOUR WITH "THREE IMAGINARY BOYS" "17 SECONDS" "FAITH" AND "PORNOGRAPHY" ?!
WAS HE ABOUT TO MAKE ANOTHER NEW WAVE OR DARKWAVE ALBUM?!
OR WHAT?!
well they played alot of the bopys dont cry/three imaginary boys songs at the albert hall show.
I think the three-piece idea that Robert had in mind was of the 'sound' of those times. I think he wanted to sound that way, to recapture the idea of minimalism. I'm speculating a lot tonight.....
Entreat - the best line-up playing a fantastic set. I wish they'd release more of this concert. They should make it available as a download only or something.

Welcome!
"ENTREAT" IS A MUST IF THEY'RE GONNA REMASTER "DISINTEGRATION"
I would pray that it wouldn't be download-only, like that "trio" set of songs. Bleh.
I want packaging, I want something I won't accidentally delete or need to back up, I want something I can bring and play anywhere...
For Entreat (or hell, the entirety of Wembley), I'd love it to be done right...
Orange but Paris is excellent too !!!
Im listening to Entreat at deafening volume right now 8)
"Prayers for Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiin!!!!!!" :rocker
So that gets my vote :smth020
~TRiLOGY~
a tie between Trilogy and Entreat for me, a minus for Entreat cause I would have loved to be it 'Disintegration' album live in total (would have been possible, all songs were played), Concert is too much of a tacked together thing although a good recording. Orange is excellent as well, of course (time for a dvd release).
Festival 2005 is ludicrously shitty in quality lots of afterwork + still nothing reached... same goes to Show, sounds so polished, damn horrible for my liking. Paris is better, but the crap version of Charlotte kills it for me..., generally a nice idea that works, though - much better than Show! worst is 5 Swing Live which was pure rip-off...
Well if we talking about official records, than "Concert" is my favorite.
I mean, everything's perfect on that album, no matter that Simon wasn't on the bass at that moment, but just listen to all songs. It's amazing, you know, the album is full of energy, every musician gave the best, so yes, definitly "Concert".
"In Orange" is different story, because it is not official album, and i really hope we will see that magical concert, with all 23 songs on CD.
Paris? Paris! Paris!!! :smth020 :rocker
The best Figurehead, One Hundred Years and In Your House ever, imho! I do love Entreat, too, but as I could pick up only one live album, so... it had to be Paris! :smth100
i chose triology
but paris and show were a close second and third
I'm a wish fan, so Of course I'm gonna pick either Show or Paris. XD
This one is easy.
"Orange" and "Trilogy" are not albums, but (great)films. "Festival" I havenĀ“t heard but is also a film. "Five Swing Tour" is an EP, not an album (I haven't heard it, but I doubt it's anything special).
"Entreat" is a really good album, but it only consists of "Disintegration" songs. What kind of a live album is that?
"Paris" and "Show" are the most incomprehensible Cure market move ever... A live album that ends with "Close to Me"- what the heck!? They should have compiled the best songs of those in a single CD and chosen a tracklist that makes sense.
So I go for "Concert". The only Cure live album that makes sense. Curiously (no pun intended) it was recorded by the most atypical of line-ups...
for me it's Trilogy. Because I think that is one of the best videos which The Cure released, has wonderful atmosphere and each song they played excellent :D Especially I love Disintegration set. I never heard better version of Homesick as here ;)

I think the Trilogy line up was the worst of them all. I liked every line up until Perry joined the band, and Jason made things even worse. The Perry problem got solved, but Jason is still there. It's a real shame that Roger isn't in the band anymore, though. I think he added a lot.

I still don't like it, and I never will. Concert, Japan, Orange and Entreat are indefinitely better. They just knew how to play a good show back then!

Absolutely. I must say that if Phil had stayed in the band, I wouldn't have missed Simon one single bit. Phil has a certain way of playing that sounds a little more energetic than Simons bass. And Andy played some great drums too!
Trilogy, but only because I haven't seen the others.
Trilogy is definitely my favorite, with Entreat and Paris close behind in that order.

i have to agree that that version of 'homesick' does get me every time.
(yet i'm still not going to vote for 'trilogy' just because of it. ;))
Trilogy all the way
Pornography is just too good
Funny how festival is so low in the poll, with the new band (4 of them) and the tour I would think it would be higher
I'd have to say Paris.
Trilogy...
entreat !! :D
Trilogy :smth023
Paris and Concert are my favourites.
I love the versions of 'Charlotte Sometimes' on these.
For some reason the songs on "Paris" just don;t flow right. Its a great collection of songs that dont mesh well.
"Show" has a lot of the hits and is not my ideal set list by far but the band sounds great and its the only version of "Picture of You" I still listen to.
Definitely Show[Deluxe] for me, with Entreat as a close second. No clumsy mastering on either, and no over abundance of muddy bass like Entreat plus. I am quite fond of the 1992 Kilburn recording, which is like Show, yet different in "sound" if that makes any sense.
01 Concert
02 Paris
03 Show
Although it's not official, I have to mention here "Shellfish's advice". A live album from the US tour
1990 with versions of "Three imaginary boys" and "Faith"on it. Absolute worth hearing.

Was there a tour of USA in 1990? :?
Anyhow, it was printed on the backside of the CD, probably a one-off.
I'm assuming that Laurence is the copyright holder of the recordings. The words
of the title would indicate this. From my point of view the version from "Faith" is better than
the version on "Charlotte sometimes" (live in Australia).
Seems like you can't trust the print on bootlegs, eh? ;)
From memory, I thought the band only played some festivals in 1990.
Then I looked it up, indeed in 1990 they only performed 11 shows in all:
http://www.cure-concerts.de/main/1990.php (http://www.cure-concerts.de/main/1990.php)
(Neither USA nor Australia were visited. Are we talking 'bout 1992 or 1989 perhaps?)

Huh? Can you elaborate on this a bit?
As far as I know Laurence (Lol) Tolhurst left the band in 1988, how would he own recordings from 1990 (or later)? :?
Edit: Judging from this tracklist, it should be 1992 (Friday I'm In Love is included):
http://www.spirit-of-rock.com/album-groupe-The_Cure-nom_album-Shellfish's_Advice-l-de.html (http://www.spirit-of-rock.com/album-groupe-The_Cure-nom_album-Shellfish's_Advice-l-de.html)
That's it. Until now I could only speak from my memory too. Unfortunately, I lost "Shellfish's advice"
fifteen years ago, but I meant definitely 1990. Now it seems that "Faith", in fact, was played occasional
that year, but only in Europe. Laurence was dismissed in January 1989. I don't know who is playing the
keyboard on "S.a.". Apart from the earlier mentioned tracks it sounds bad. So it is more likely that
"Shellfish's advice" is mixed with live tracks from different years. Apart from that there's now no
evidence that Laurence is responsible for this bootleg. To make confusion perfect: I could not found
"Three imaginary boys" in 1990. Do you have an idea?

Definitely not, with "Friday..." included, this song was certainly
not performed before 1992!

I think you gave yourself an answer to that with the sentence before: it might be recordings from different concerts from various years!
To get back to the original question: best live "album" for me used to be
Show (VHS video - because it includes more songs, especially that long version of "A Forest" with additional words). The reason for this being of course that I saw the band live in 1992 and "Show" looks & sounds very similar! (Of course, "Paris" is the perfect companion, some more songs on that which were played at the show I'd seen...)
Nowadays I'm not quite sure if I do have any fave live album. Maybe time for a new one? ;)
You don't get it, Ulrich. The year 1990 was clearly printed on the backside, but now I'm repeating myself.
Nevertheless, thank you for bring in some light in the past.
Hey, you don't get it - it is possible that "1990" was printed on there, but with it being a "bootleg" there is a strong possibility that the "bootleggers" got it wrong!
Are you tring to tell me that "Friday" was performed in 1990? If so, you should bring some proof!
Edit: Found a pic, it says "P 1993", but the publishing date does not mean it was recorded in that year.

No, I'm not telling you fairy tales. There is no question about "Friday I'm in love". This nearly forgotten
album received now more attention than expected. My intention was to find an assignment for "Faith"
and "Three imaginary boys" on that bootleg, but now it seems that it's my problem and not longer
yours, Ulrich. Don't you think so? Otherwise I would finish that awkward conversation.
What was "awkward" was your claim that there was a "USA tour 1990" - something very easy to check via the internet. Also the printed "1990" turned out to be "1993".
Can't see what the big "problem" is here now, except maybe that your memory isn't as good as you would have thought. ;)
Certainly this bootleg is more known now.
All right. I cannot force my memory, of course. Regarding the overall sound of both versions
they are very probably from the 'BEACH PARTY TOUR' 1986 and I'm satisfied so far.
Happy Easter, Ulrich!
