For those interested, 5 hours after tickets went on sale for NY floor seats are still available.  While this sounds great to me (since I thought I might have a tough time getting good seats for 5 shows) it really makes me wonder why The Cure are playing such large venues.

Well, they are a big band :)

Here in southamerica they would full stadiums without any problem I can guarantee. Remember in Mexico 2004, they had to open two more dates because they sold more than 20 000 tickets (the capacity of the mexican venue) in a few hours. Maybe in the US, where they have played so many times they are not so crazy about The Cure like in southamerica? :)

i can't help but thinking the same. i mean, are they still THAT big in the US? despite everything i'd like to think personally, i really don't think so. i don't doubt that they'd sell out a stadium in south america but in the US, i think it's different.
and madison square garden is pretty huge... (maybe they don't even plan to use/sell the whole venue?)

for comparison, how were they selling on the dream tour US dates? from what i was pointed out they actually did play some pretty small venues a lot of places and when they played some big ones then some of these actually sold pretty poorly.
so this makes me a bit afraid for them....! i hope it works for them.

The one thing that I think they have going for them is that they're only playing 20 dates and some big markets, like Detroit are left off.  That means that a lot of fans will be traveling that may not otherwise.

Playing the Garden (and other such venues) seems like a wonderful idea to me. It means that US fans won't have to go through the same despair some other fans have had to, and which US fans have had to in the past; it means that there probably won't be a horrible blitz for tickets, which allows fans to purchase tickets at a time other than the first day they're on sale, and still have a decent chance at decent tickets.

Really, would you rather see The Cure at an ultra-packed venue, sold out and without space to breathe, or a show where you aren't forced to get unwillingly intimate with the people in front, behind, and to the sides of you? I know what I'd rather see.

The capacity of these places also means that people other than uber-fans (that is, people who track their every move) will have a chance to see them. And consider -- some venues aren't so huge. The Santa Barbara Bowl is a quarter of the size of the Garden, for instance.
Another Curefan for The Dark Christmas album.

yes but doesn't a lot of those bad memories of all the difficulties in getting tickets in the past comes from the times when the cure really were popular among the mainstream audiences? that's quite different than today. it's not '92 anymore, even if we wanted it to be. and like i said, dream tour already showed this. whereas it was a very successful tour in its entirety, they didn't sell out in the US just like in the old days. and on dream tour they played 23 US dates (not counting the warm-up tour) which is not much more than they are doing now (20), and still some big venues were nowhere near of selling out. i just think that if we want to make some advance comparisons/guesses today i think the comparison with dream tour is more realistic than comparison with wish/prayer tour.
but i do hope i'll be proved all wrong!

surely yes, but the fact might also be than a lot less non-fans will even plan to attend since they are not that popular among mainstream audiences anymore, like i said. so there's necessarily no need for some "extra room" for average concert goers/non-fans", whatever one wants to call it. and thus i just think it's a rather bold move to go play something the size of madison square garden, that's all.

anyway, don't get me wrong here. i'm not trying to fan the flame of defeatism here prior to the actual events or sitting here with a stupid smirk on my face wanting to see them fail miserably and then go like "haha i knew it!" - no no, not at all. more than anything i'd like to see them being as successful as possible and i do hope they sell out and i do hope they have good audiences. i was just thinking out loud.
and let's hope it works for them!  :smth023

I don't really get all these big venues. I mean, they don't even have a new album out. So I would predict sales to be worse than Curiosa, which isn't a good thing. :?

But... I hope I'm wrong too!

Hey,

I just got an e-mail this morning from MSG management that the upcoming date (the Sunday after next!) has been postponed! Any truth to this? Has anyone else heard about this?

(Way to keep on top of things, MSG...)

If anyone happens to find a pair of seats (ANY!) at a decent price, give me a heads-up, if you can.

(While I like the fact that Boston & NY were re-scheduled on opposite ends of the tour -- I get to see them early, and on the last date -- it dawned on me that they re-scheduled NY on my girlfriend's birthday... And as I only bought one ticket, initially, and still want to go, I need to turn this into a birthday trip to NY, else I look like total ****.)

I'm not going to this show because it's just too big a venue to really enjoy the show if you're not somewhat close.  I've been to a few shows there (DM and White Stripes) and I just couldn't get into the show.  I've seen those two bands in smaller venues and enjoyed it much more.  I've seen The Cure in Radio City 1996 and Jones Beach in 2000 and they were much better in those places.  MSG is too big for my taste, unless you're really close of course.  But I lucked out because they're playing Radio City again and we're going there instead.  Last day of the North American tour.  I hope they go out with a bang.  Let's get some Pornography in there preferably; Cold, Pornography, Siamese Twins and The Figurehead.   :D
