He was a retired sailor. I don't know how somebody in the band met him but I guess Porl loved the man's face and wanted to photography it. Amazing wrinkles, it's true.  :lol:

I read somewhere that in Brazil, that cover was considered a little offensive. As it's showing an old man face in close up. But it's certainly cultural, the photo doesn't make fun of the man at all. And John Button appeared in the Killing An Arab video as well. The man died soon after it was made.

I heared that story too and I really think it's a great, great picture.

I remember now that I was kind of surprised that the cover was such a picture, when I first saw it, caus I was all used to the other art instead of this but once again, it's a great picture I reckon.

I actually have always thought that the reason for the old man photography on the SOTB compilation cover was to show more or less how Robert Smith would look like in his old age...
