Title: "Cured: Tale of Two Imaginary Boys" by Lol Tolhurst
Post by: Ulrich on January 18, 2016, 18:24:36
Looks like Lol Tolhurst has written a book about his time with Robert & The Cure. Supposed to be released later this year (October), tentatively titled "Cured: Memoir of Two Imaginary Boys":

QuoteMemoir by founding member of legendary British post-punk/goth band The Cure, childhood best friend of their iconic lead singer Robert Smith.

This sounds like it will be a great read. Lol has an active Twitter account (which I follow) and he seems to be doing really well, living in LA with 25 years sobriety, a vegan diet and an active yoga practice. Doesn't even smoke anymore. Very different from the Lol of old and I would be curious to hear his side of things, as all Cure fans, including me, tend to side with Robert.

Well, judging from his post about "Disintegration" a while ago, he seems to (partly) blame himself. And mentioned how his life in LA was/is much better. :)

Quote
Somehow I eventually resurfaced in California ,and found a liberation from my personal demons and learnt to live again. I feel that, in a way, Los Angeles saved my life. I will always be grateful.

So as the years passed communications and friendship returned. Eventually all the nonsense and sadness and pain I had caused myself and the others dissolved .

Quote
Quercus has acquired the memoir of Lol Tolhurst, one of the founding members of The Cure.

Richard Milner, publishing director for non-fiction, bought the book at a "hard-fought" auction from Caspian Dennis, acting on behalf of Peter McGuigan at Foundry. North American rights were bought by Ben Shafer at Da Capo Press, and translation rights are being handled by Kirsten Neuhaus at Foundry.

Milner said: "I count myself as one of the old Cure fans Lol refers to, and we're all really excited to be publishing his book. Cured is both an affecting friendship memoir and a transportative account of what happens to a suburban 70s dreamer when he becomes a global pop star."

Tolhurst, also the former drummer and keyboardist for the band, said: "For many of my generation the Cure has been a huge part of their lives, but for me it's been my whole life. Robert and I have known each other since we were five-years-old. I'm really looking forward to sharing the ups and downs, and in-between days, of my life in the Cure with fans old and new. Writing Cured has been a totally cathartic experience for me. I feel like I have waited my whole life to tell this story."

Cured will publish on 22nd September 2016 in hardback, priced £20.00.

Interview with Lol about the book:

http://noisey.vice.com/blog/boys-dont-cry-a-story-of-rock-n-roll-and-surviving-the-cure

Just a few quotes:
QuoteI know Cure fans that could write a better biography than me, because they're so obsessed with the facts and figures that they have them all in their head and they could write it perfectly. But that wasn't what I wanted to write. I wanted to explain how things started, because nobody knows that. They don't know how we started and how it was to grow up where we grew up and why that made us do what we did. And so I wanted to explain that to myself first and just move on from there.
...

Yes, it's a book about the band, and in the end that's going to be the same story, but ultimately I wanted it to dig further than that, because it's the story of the time that I grew up in and what happened to the people of that time and where they are now and how life is now and how it affects everybody.

Should be interesting!

QuoteIn Cured Lol threads the genesis of The Cure through his schoolboy years with Smith, the iconic leader of the group, and the bands most successful era in the 1980s. He takes us up to the present day, a riveting forty years since the band's inception.

The band's journey to worldwide success is woven into a story not only of great highs and lows but also of love, friendship, pain, forgiveness and, ultimately, redemption on a beach in Hawaii.

Cured highlights those parts of the creative journey that are not normally revealed to fans, incorporating many first-hand recollections around Lol's personal odyssey. From suburban London to the Mojave Desert, Cured brings an acute eye for the times to bear on a lifelong friendship, with tales of addiction and despair along the way.

Well at least ONE member of The Cure is coming to Seattle.  It'll be nice to say hello to him and have him sign the book.  Pearl will be making appearances in select cities, hope one of them is Seattle.  I mentioned Vancouver to Lol and he immediately remembered the Commodore Ballroom and the date of the gig; he recalls the gig with enthusiasm, that's for sure.  Those four West Coast dates in July 1981 were pretty spectacular.

At this point, looks like Pearl will only be at the Long Beach event on the 20th, he'll be staging an exhibition of some of his art.  Of all the members of The Cure, Pearl would be at the top of my list to meet.

In one of those interviews or Q&A's (linked above), Lol was asked about that. Said he sent Robert the book, hopes he's read it, but hasn't heard back from him (yet).
I think it is a wise move of Robert to let the book do it's business (and comment later, if at all). Interviews are nowhere to be seen during this Cure tour, it seems. Maybe there will be an interview one day, maybe he'll be asked about the book then...

When I bought the first ticket, they only had one front row seat left, so my wife would have to end up being seated somewhere else...behind me if we were fortunate enough.  Then there was a second charge on the account for another front row seat.  I e-mailed the guy handling the tickets (Stefan) and he told me  that for some unknown reason, a second 1st row seat showed up.  I asked how many front row seats there were to begin with and he said 5.  Five seats.  Turns out it's a tiny radio station studio so this is going to be fun.  With comedians you never want to sit in the front row because people in the front row inevitably become part of the show whether they want to or not.  I think we're pretty safe in Lol's hands there.  Original Cure member on the 28th and original Joy Division member on the 3rd, then the election on the 8th.  The next few weeks are going to be...crazy.

Lol's book is really good, non-stop all the way through, always ready to turn the next page.  Got to meet him two nights ago on his book tour, very smart, very pleasant, very humble, looks back very fondly on his time with The Cure, especially his time on the drum stool and is very happy about the reconciliation with Robert.  In his book, he had especially fond memories of the California gigs in 1981 so I e-mailed him and he said he'd love to hear the Pasadena gig and I told him I'd bring it with me that night.  I ended up bringing Pasadena, Hollywood and San Francisco from July '81, plus Edinburgh from May, then Amsterdam 1979 and the Los Angeles show in 2000 before which he reconciled with Robert and later on Robert dedicated The Figurehead to Lol.  He was especially pleased with the Pasadena show and the 2000 show, but the people he has on the road with him were excited that they had all this great early live Cure to listen to.  If there's a tour stop near you and you haven't decided to go yet, get tickets immediately.  There's a reading, a Q&A and then a sort of signing/chatting thing, although the chat has to be kept to a minimum due to the several hundred people waiting behind you in line.  Great book, great fun, really good man is Lol, great experience to remember always.  Got a few pictures but have to get 'em on the hard drive first, will follow in the next day or two.

The book is a revelation, especially chapter 19 when he
describes the recording sessions for Disintegration. Shattering
and disarming honest at the same time. I always had the view
that Lol is a multi-talented guy and keen observer. His memoirs
confirm this-once again. I'm also impressed by his voice (at yt)
and writing style, and the decision to write the book was damn
right. It's a delight to see him reunited with Boris, Pearl(Porl) and
current members of The Cure-including Robert. Great job and a
remarkable first hand account!

It is a very good book indeed. Just don't expect "accuracy" when it comes to telling the Cure story (pun absolutely intended). For example when he talks about the recording of "Disintegration" Roger isn't even mentioned (only later when he tells about the 2011 "reunion" shows he talks a bit about Roger).
But if you always wanted to know "what's it like being in a band?" this book will give you a reply! It tells a lot about the internal relationships within The Cure from the very start until 1989 (and beyond). Apart from that you'll find anecdotes from the tours and recording sessions.
It is becoming obvious when reading this book that Lol is a person with a good heart, it was just that his alcoholism got in the way. And he makes no excuses about that.
Right now he seems utterly happy with his life & his friendship with Robert and Co., long may it continue!

Just finished this book and really enjoyed it. You have to hand it to Lol. This really could have been a "He said. She said" kind of a story where he basically tells everyone where the bodies are buried-instead he takes full responsibility for what went wrong. That is admirable. I do wonder if Lol himself suffers from some form of PTSD from living with his alcoholic father and that is what led to his own addiction.

Of all the key players, Porl really touched my heart during the few times when he tried to talk some sense into his friend who was spinning out control. I dig Porl.

Anyway definitely worth getting.

It's wonderful to have met Lol Tolhurst and to see he's retained his innocence after the many dark years. And of course it's wonderful to have seen Pearl Thompson, dazzling. At the end of the Q&A, the interviewer pleads with the audience "don't bum rush us," as 3/4 of 500 attendees stood up to get in line to meet Lol and Pearl, and get Cured signed.

Before the show started, Lol introduced The Cure in Orange, pronouncing it OH-RAWnge as it's pronounced in french. He also took a video of the audience saying "Happy Birthday, Robert" and sent it to Robert Smith. We all waited patiently to see if Robert replied, but by the end of the night he had not.

New article/interview in the "Irish Times"!  :smth023

QuoteConsidering The Cure sold more than 30 million albums, it was inevitable someone in their inner circle would eventually write a memoir to counter a slew of tacky cut-and-paste biogs.

Former keyboardist, drummer and founding member Lol Tolhurst has penned Cured: A Tale of Two Imaginary Boys; one of the most honest and moving music books of recent years. It candidly chronicles The Cure's emergence from the grey gloom of Crawley in West Sussex during the Thatcher years to blossom into one of the biggest bands in the world.

Tolhurst began writing the book after singer Robert Smith claimed he didn't feel up to the task.

"A few years ago, I asked Robert if he was ever going to write a book about the band," Tolhurst recalls. "Robert joked that he might do a 16-page comic, but he didn't have enough for a book. He never objected to me writing it because, while I know where the bodies are buried, I'm not going to sully the reputation of the band for the benefit of my own ego. I hate it when some memoirs and autobiographies turn into score-settling exercises.

"I gave Robert the first copy of Cured... last year. If there was anything at all in it he didn't like, I'd have heard from him the very next day."

"After every single book event I do, I get at least one or two people coming up and telling me Cured... really helped them," says Tolhurst. "This is incredibly flattering, obviously, but also very, very humbling. People need to be recognised. When I first became aware of my issues with alcohol, I just thought I was going mad. A music rehab facility in Detroit has made Cured... required reading, which totally blows my mind.

"My main reason was to explain my life to myself, but halfway through it, it appeared to me that the thing that makes any memoir or autobiography worth reading is that you feel the person and you feel the honesty, right? So that's what I wanted to convey. So far, the reaction's been very good and I feel very blessed with that."

Are they in regular contact?

"Yes, absolutely," he says. "The people that I grew up with like Mike Dempsey, Robert, Simon Gallup, Porl Thompson, those are my teenage friends. I stay in touch with them all the time. In fact Porl lives out here now, he's about half-an-hour's drive from me."

Any other projects on the horizon?

"I'm going do more with Levinhurst (the band he formed with wife Cindy Levinson) this year," he says. "The last two years the book has totally taken over my life. I haven't been up to anything except that. Also, I'm thinking of doing my own radio show. If Steve Jones can do it so can I!" Lol also recently tweeted about another writing project, with the working title Cured Part 2.

"There will actually be two more books," he smiles. "One is a sequel – I don't want to give too much away. It's a little different. The other one is a graphic novel that I'm going to do with Porl because he's such a great artist. So there are two on the horizon but it won't be for a while."

Lol Tolhurst will visit the Roisin Dubh, Galway (July 16); Crane Lane, Cork (19); Dolan's, Limerick (21); Boneyard Records, Omagh (22), Boyle Arts Festival (24) and Whelan's, Dublin (25) as part of his Irish book tour.

As for the modern life is rubbish theory, Tolhurst says older music listeners just get lazy: "I really dislike when people say there is no good music around anyone. If you think that you are not looking hard enough or you are maybe even to old to look.

"I am kinda lucky though I am also able to listen to stuff my son Gray tells me about. Recently I have been listening to Broadcast and Caribou."

Writing about the ill-fated decision to sue Smith and record label Fiction for a greater cut of royalties and co-ownership of the band's name is one such moment of exposure. In hindsight, Tolhurst admits that pursuing the case, which dragged on for much of the 90s, was connected to his deep sense of hurt at having been expelled from the band.

"It was partially a relief, but there was a lot of sadness with it as well," he says of leaving the band. "I felt expelled from my family."

Nice new review:

His style is very English -- that is, dry and direct, especially in his humor -- even as he is describing the most poetic and emotional of moments. There's also a sense of foreboding that pervades all the youthful innocence and the heady early days of the band. Writing with the benefit of hindsight, Tolhurst has a sense of how temporary it all is, and how quickly and violently it comes crashing down.
...
Happily, the book is a redemption story. As Tolhurst finds his way to sobriety, finds his way toward family, and finds his way toward reconciliation with the members of the band he had once blown up all bridges to get away from, there is a sense that Tolhurst has found a path to follow for the remainder of his life. He has finally found something to be proud of, something he can enjoy.

Already finished it.

A nice read, better than expected.

A bit crestfallen that so little stories about the band surfaced, but then again, this is Lol's book, not The Cure's book (well, not completely).

I loved the beginning. I felt very much empathy for them, in many respects I feel the same way about my town as they did about Crawley.

I also liked the desert part.

I feel like a bad fan, as I purchased the book about two months ago (it was released nearly 2 years ago!) and just started reading it last days (I am in the half)... so my advise to those who didn't read the book: do NOT make the same mistake as me. Please DO buy the book and read it asap! Lol is a great storyteller and I was immediately captured by the tales surrounding the beginning of The Cure, the weird places they played, the mysteriousness of Robert, how England was back then, etc... I am looking forward to finishing the book this weekend. Can't wait for Part II!
