Cure related bands: And Also The Trees

What's their connection with the Cure?

Robert Smith and the band invited And Also The Trees (AATT) to open for The Cure in some 1981 concerts, after having learned from them as a consequence of an add looking for support bands for The Cure's English tour... Robert co-produced AATT's second demo tape ('From Under the Hill' (1982)) and Lol Tolhurts was the producer for their debut self-titled album (1983).

Why would you want to listen to them?

AATT are/were one of the most unique 'goth' pop/rock bands. Their trademark sound is based on trebling mandolin-like guitars that are used to create some of the most majestic and downrigth beautiful melodies (I would guess they somewhat antecipated some of the so-called post-rock sound in this respect).. They excel at creating atmosphere. They are also masterful songwriters, their lyrics having an unusual literary quality, portraing the stories of various doomed characters with dramatic flair.

What albums should you check?

'Virus Meadow' (1986), 'The Millpond Years' (1988), 'Farewell to the Shade' (1989) and 'Green is the Sea' (1992) are the albums that show AATC at their peak, although other albums could very well be worth the trouble. Actually, they have recently (2007) released a new album, 'The Rag and Bone Man' (haven't checked it yet, though).

'Virus Meadow' is the most intense and rocking of the four and also my personal favourite, if only by a very tiny margin. For sheer melodic beauty, however, you should proceed directly to 'Farewell to the Shade', which is a CLASSIC, song-by-song. 'Green is the Sea' is slightly more commercial and keyboard-oriented and probably the least great of the four, but it's not really that big a difference.

A good sample of what AATT can do is the single 'Shaletown', from 'The Millpond Years' album. It's epic in tone, it´s beautiful and once you hear it you will probably never be able to forget it.

Hey, thanks. I've been here for a few weeks, already, and will continue, as long as I have time.

I didn't notice this "off topic" part of the forum, at first. It seems that it can only be visualized when you're registered...
