Title: RAR files?
Post by: rodney on October 03, 2006, 01:27:24
Whenever I download a show from this site that's FLAC files, it always comes over as an RAR file.  What's this and what do I do to get to the song files?

You must uncompress the file with WINRAR http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche9632-winrar.html

You can also use 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) if you've got windows.

google.... ;)
i'm pc handicapped what comes to testing any pc applications or being sure of the newest updates, but at least some links like this seems to be very easy to google out:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/13189
http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250-10007677.html

although those are free trials/shareware versions.
i don't know if there's a free version of winRAR for pc with which you can just unzip files (but not zip).
there's a free application like that for mac which is pretty handy:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15272

anyway at least you can try out the free trial version and then decide to buy it if you find it useful.

of course winamp can't play .rar files because winamp can only play audio formats. winamp cannot know what kind of files you have inside that zipped package until you unzip it first.
the reason why many downloaded flac files come packed with some zipping application is because most upload sites (like megaupload, rapidshare) only allow you to upload one file/one package at a time. so if you want to upload several files at a time, you need to zip them first.

Thanks M!  :smth023
while I was awaiting help, I did google, and purchased the winrar from rar.lab.com...  :smth023  then I had trouble with that,  :smth011 cos they sent the registration key in a .rar file!! finally figured out I had to go back to site, download, then drop key into file, now it's working!! i think..  :smth017

haha that sounds like a pretty cool business idea: "please pay and buy our product and we'll send you the license for it... but please remember that you must have already purchased our product first anyway before you can put this license into use. so actually: please don't plan to purchase our product unless you have already purchased our product anyway. thanks!"
i bet a company with that kind of policy is bound to make a lot of money. :P

well, looking at the links above the trial versions are free. but otherwise it's a shareware, not a freeware application.
(or maybe you're using some illegal download site, getting a "limewire discount" or something like that...)

Sorry, my bad habit :P

Yes, it's a shareware application. After the test-period you should buy it, but in reality, you can still go on trying the software without limitations

I had a look around, and decided to go with the purchasing option. The shareware free download option I decided not to go with, cos I really not a fan of shareware. I figured I'd be using it for awhile. So far so good!  :smth023

The shareware option's not really that bad.
You get an irritating "wanna buy it" window pop up when the 30 days is up, but it doesn't appear to affect the prog any.

a tip: google is your friend....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAR_(file_format)

.rar is not an audio format but an archiving format.
you need an application with which to decode the .rar files first.
scroll down that page above to find some links.

hi cooky!

i have used winrar for .rar files..  so far so good... although I don't have to worry too much about the .rar files now, since i have winamp, and frontendflac and a few other conversion plugins..

goodluck!

@Cooky: This question was already asked and answered.... I am going to merge the topics. You can always use the Search feature (http://curefans.com/index.php/index.php?action=search) we have above. Scroll-up this page to find the answer to your question :smth023

@scatcat: I would not mix winrar with winamp or flacfronted, it can lead to confusion. Winrar is a software to compress/descompress any(!) kind of file, while flacfronted and winamp are audio-related programs.
