QuoteThe Cure's Robert Smith has been announced as the curator of the 2018 Meltdown festival. The event, which will be held at London's Southbank Centre, is now in its 25th year.

Each Meltdown festival is curated by a different artist. In a statement, Smith said: "I am honoured and excited to be curating the 25th Meltdown Festival. More than 30 of my all time favourite artists – some of the most exciting, inspirational, intense and influential performers of the last 40 years – will make sure this 10-night extravaganza at London's Southbank Centre is the must-see event of the summer!"

The first artists for Smith's event will be announced in early March. This year's festival will be the first to take place across the entire Southbank Centre site, including the recently refurbished Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room.

The Cure frontman follows in some pretty remarkable and diverse footsteps as Meltdown curator. From British composer George Benjamin in 1993 to rapper record producer and activist M.I.A. in 2017, 24 legendary artists have gone before Smith, each putting their own special stamp on the festival as they delivered their own Meltdown vision.

More than 30 of my all-time favourite artists - some of the most exciting, inspirational, intense and influential performers of the last 40 years - will make sure this ten-night extravaganza is the 'must see' event of the summer!

QuoteInstrumental post-rock quartet 65daysofstatic perform at Queen Elizabeth Hall for the 25th Meltdown.

Friends of Robert Smith, they joined The Cure on their tours of Europe and the US in 2008, and their 2010 album We Were Exploding Anyway featured Smith's sampled vocals on the song 'Come to Me'.

Robert Smith has announced the artists he has curated for this year's Meltdown festival.

Smith said: "Curating this 25th Meltdown festival is a dream come true, a fantastic experience... albeit getting 60 wonderful artists, including many of my all time favourites, to come together for 10 days in June is not without its challenges - as one of my predecessors noted, it is akin to figuring out a giant psychedelic puzzle.

"But as each invitee confirms, as each shimmering piece falls into place, I pinch myself - this is really happening... and the complete picture will undoubtedly be out of this world!"

You're not the first to notice.

QuoteAs @slicingeyeballs pointed out, it isn't ALL CAPS, so probably just his social media person, not actually Robert.

QuoteRobert Smith from The Cure sits in for Iggy Pop with a special show reflecting his curation of this year's Meltdown Festival at London's Southbank Centre.

Robert gives you an insight into the curation process and the overriding theme of his choice of acts for this year. Taking you from the alternative rock of The Psychedelic Furs, through the Japanese instrumental post-rock of Mono, the electronica of Eat Static and even over to the singer-songwriter styling of Suzanne Vega.

Interview ahead of Mogwai's Meltdown performance:
https://theculturetrip.com/europe/united-kingdom/england/london/articles/mogwais-stuart-braithwaite-on-how-the-music-industry-has-a-class-problem/

Quote"Probably the Scottish weather. That's probably where it comes from. Either that or the failures of the Scottish football team." Guitarist Stuart Braithwaite is chuckling to himself as he explains why his band Mogwai make such mournful music. "Those are probably the main sources of sadness in Scotland."
The band's melancholic post-rock conjures up stark soundscapes that ebb and flow with emotion – finding beauty in a dense fog of despair that is carefully created with layer upon layer of guitars pushed to ear-splitting levels.

Fans will get the chance to witness this up close when they play a one-off show as part of Meltdown at London's Southbank Centre. The band were invited by this year's festival curator, The Cure frontman Robert Smith. "We've played quite a few shows with them during the years and kept in touch. It was really nice of him to ask us to play when he was organising the festival," says Braithwaite.

"I'm a huge The Cure fan. They're one of my favourite bands. It's very personal music. They've made amazing records and played legendary shows where they perform for hours and hours. Not many other bands can do that without people wanting to leave."

QuoteAs with many of the acts on this year's blistering Meltdown festival bill, you get the sense that being handpicked by Cure frontman Robert Smith to perform at Royal Festival Hall on London's Southbank is something of a dream come true for Mogwai.

Sandwiched between performances by Deftones and Nine Inch Nails, Mogwai are here with a set drawn from across their back catalogue - in a programme boasting the cream of post-rock talent (65daysofstatic and MONO among them), Mogwai are the kings of the hill; top of the heap.
