Minidisc is a very, very lossy format

Hi,

Listening to some minidisc-recorded shows i?ve noticed
that not only is it lossy, it also colours the whole highest frequency range in some bizarre, ringing sounds. Quite an inferior format compared to mp3. At least mp3 done with lame- encoder and variable bit rates doesn't colour the sound in any way.
The sony attrac3 - codec seems to add some ringing, metallic and awful sounds throughout the highest frequency range (above 14khz) that don't exist in the original music. You can hear these defects in midisc format by listening to, for example, the minidisc recorded show in Lokeren, 2005, encoded in flac.

The Lokeren show which is minidisc sourced and encoded in flac can be found on

www.dimeadozen.org

become a member and install BitTorrent or similar program.

There are some stunning live tapes there by The Fall that are professionally
remastered. I wish cure fans had such remastering skills. The minidisc
shows need to be EQ_ed before encoding in my opinion. The bad frequencies should be cut out completely for the best listening experience. But this is maybe just me - because i am allergic to minidisc compression artifacts.

What happen when your record with a Minidisc but in PCM format, now with the Hi-MD you can record 1:34 hrs, there is no compression but you need two minidisc to record one concert...

It would be very nice that shows would be recorded in uncompressed
format. however, most important thing is that the shows get completely
recorded, so it is up to the recorder to decide if taking the risk of running out discs is necessary. usually it?s probably not necessary to take the risk.

i like the sound of "route du rock" minidisc recording. the sound of the
lokeren show i don?t like, but these are only personal tastes.
