For a while I admit I had them pegged as yet-another nu-metal act ("Us or Them").

I thought they were a John Lennon tribute band!  ???

Another Curefan for The Dark Christmas album.

First post for me.
Anyhow came here after the Melbourne gig (awesome..) just for a bit of a browse and wanted to add my two penny worth. For me the Cure have been a lifelong thing, i first saw them in 82' and don't think I've missed a chance to see them each tour since. I did move to Aus in '93 but saw each UK tour at least once before. Here in Aus we get them once every 6 or so years it seems. Anyhow back to topic - the Cure, IMHO, are nearly impossible to label using the standard cliches. They have evolved over so much but in the beginning they were probably "New Wave". I never thought of them as Gothic as the bands who were (Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephilim, March Violets etc) were aware of the Gothic tag and embraced it. There was always a slightly comedic element to Goth bands too, they kinda played up to the image. The Cure on the other hand around Pornography, never even came close to that. They were for real and just to plain dark for that. The Banshees on the other hand defiantly ploughed the Goth field during the JuJu period and played along with the tag. In short the Cure were to confronting and intense to be a Goth band. When the goth tag came back to them the music was as far removed from the tense dark soundscapes as chalk is to cheese. The image however fitted and so the press found a new pigeon hole for them.

TO MANY - DEPECHE MODE ARE GOTH!

:-D

Well, there are a few songs form their 'Songs of Faith and Devotion' album that could be labelled goth - they all have the required darkness and intensity: Rush, In Your Room...

Now that I think of it, it's possible that The Cure went goth again after 1982... It all happened around 1998, when they released the album 'Discouraged Ones' under the name of Katatonia...  :-D

Robert Smith actually called the band goth once. During the Leipzig show before playing the Lament/M/In Your House/Faith Encore he said "This is the goth bit of our set". I must say I found that pretty funny seeing as most fans are so adamantly against anyone calling the band gothic.

Trust...

Well I don't know how to call the music, I wanna call it just THE CURE  :D
When I was 14, 15, 16, I had albums from The Sisters Of Mercy, Joy Division, etc ... but The Cure was always more special, on that age they say to you, you gonna love it (the other bands), yeah 15 years ago!
Now I still have those albums but I can't listen to a full album, to gothic for me, maybe I'm to old?
So for me, The Cure is just The Cure, and I love all the music!
I don't think it needed a stamp on it.
