The people who publish these dates should really brush up on their geography.

Not exactly Washington D.C., even though it's nearby.

I agree.  Often, Seattle is listen when a band plays George, WA.  It's over 2 hours away!

Hope I make it in time for the show, if at all....my flight is scheduled to land in DC at 3:30pm tomorrow

Overnight into Friday, look for heavy rain moving through the central Appalachians to the Eastern Seaboard. The corridor from Washington, D.C., to New York City will see heavy rain well into Friday.

Just back from stalking the venue.

Band have arrived at Patriot Center.
Soundcheck is beginning, but I can't tell you the setlist because I have shit to do, bad timining on my part, I didn't want to leave.

Saw Robert walking in, yelled his name and told him to play Faith.
He heard it, what he will do is another story.

THE VENUE HAS CONFIRMED THE SET WILL BE THREE, OR CLOSE TO THREE HOURS!!
Stage time is:
8:15 - 12:00!!!!!!!!

Call me an old lady but hearing that the volume is at a more reasonable level REALLY makes me happy. I'd love to be able to go sans earplugs. I remember Curiosa was one of the first rock concerts I ever saw that didn't leave me with ringing ears and it was just so much more pleasant that way. Download in comparison was a LOT louder and I had to stuff cotton in my ears--and I don't like hearing my music muffled!

Any word on soundcheck -- i expected a new song tonight but am surprised so far that nothing different has appeared in the fairly static set.  Don't get me wrong, I'm going tomorrow night and again at the end of tour for 2 nights in NY, and would simply love the setlist played so far, but I would have thought maybe something different, just to keep us guessing????  Based on tonights, I expect to get a Head on the Door heavy set tomorrow -- Kyoto Song, A Night Like This, or the Blood......thoughts......

The Perfect Boy.

Do you think this song has something to do with "The perfect girl" from Kiss me album? I mean, I hear Robert had written many songs in the past, and maybe he's finally releasing part of this old unreleased stuff (which would be great, indeed)...

Sarcasm, Brian?

And I'd be surprised if there's any sort of direct link between The Perfect Boy and The Perfect Girl. That would be too easy. Though I'm beginning to wonder if we should be seeing a thematic pattern for this album: Robert's lack of children.

(And I would kill for them to play Seventeen Seconds; but keep in mind this is the first show of the tour.)

I was reading in COF that the prices are like in Europe: too expensive!. A shirt cost US$45 (which is like 30 euro). Too much expensive really :(

is that for the cheapest shirt? youre kidding me! they dont sell em for $25 anymore? i really hope they havent jacked up the price of the tour book as well..
theyve got so much crew to pay, and economy is bad enough as it is, im not surprised the prices are so expensive. and the merch design isnt the best either

Where you bought at that price?

In Paris it was 30 Euros and same thing in Oberhausen (where I bought for that price). What is interesting is that the shirt's label says is made in Honduras (central america). I don't think the real cost of that shirt -including printing- pass 5US$. To pay 10 times it's real value is really too much. But there will be always fanatics (like me) who will buy it (even if we're broke after that)

Hey guys...overall a really good show.  Very surprising considering it was the first show of the tour and they generally "play it safe" (a crowbi_wan quote) by playing the singles.

As I mentioned, the volume was nowhere near the level of Mexico City.

I have a ton of pics that I will upload early in the week.  I just got lost in Fairfax trying to get back to my hotel.  What should have taken 20 mins took well over an hour, and included help from VA's finest!  I am off to bed (I hope) so I can catch my train to Philly for the show tomorrow.

Special thanks to BC for posting the list I sent to him.  I hope you have unlimited texts Brian!  If not, let me know and I can email the songs instead tomorrow.

If not, let me know and I can email the songs instead tomorrow.

so where did you sit to get a good pics of them? anyone has video tape them can upload on youtube.

i'm sorry I didn't bring a camera with me. I remember enough what did they look like.

I was on the floor, Section 2, Row Q, Seat 1 (last row of section 2, Simon's side, about 8 seats to the right of DFC).  I was the guy that looked like he was wearing a backpack shaped like a security guard  :?.  I wasn't amused that the security guard was so close to me.

Anyone who could tell us about the new song The Perfect Boy?
What it sounds like? Poppy, gloomy?

What was the mood of the band?

More Pics, sounds?

Thanxs in advance....

I didn't care what did the crowd do at the last night show. I just most of all look at the band with my binoculars.

well, i was just wondering how different the US audience seems to be compared to the european crowds: there seems to be so little movement in the crowd, so little visible response to the show that it almost looks like a dire straits crowd or something...
just pretty weird to me.

when I was sitting in section 110 I've seen plenty of people dancing like they seemed to enjoy the show. the crowd is not that bad. I guess The Cure are more popular in other countries then the US.

You nailed it right on the head.  In general, the vast majority of US crowds only move during the pop stuff.  Case in point... people to my immediate right knew all of the songs, but pretty much just swayed a bit all night.  Once that last encore came on and Lovecats, WCIBY, etc was on, a couple of the girls really started moving (not that I really noticed! :smth023).

I do have to say that some in the crowd were singing the whoa oh oh in the beginning of Play for Today, but having been to 7 shows in Europe I can say from experience that at times the singing is 100 times louder in Europe and the crows are into the dancing aspect more in the EU.

One thing that I noticed last night as well.  In comparison to other shows, there was a distinct lack of the goth/punk sector in the crowd.  There were alot of just "plain" people for lack of a better term.  It was as if they were playing at  a mall and the shoppers were watching them play.

I like the end of the world they have played.

...so, either 'friday' doesn't qualify as pop stuff () or the maximum movement was really pretty minimal.
but nothing new, really: i've heard many times that in the US people don't ever even raise their hands during THE moment in 'fteotdgs' - people often ask "what moment??" when you bring this up... and like you said, that they don't know how to sing along with 'play for today'.

i was thinking "The Perfect Boy" could be the 4th single.
at the moment we know 4 songs (The Only One, Freakshow, A Boy I Never Knew, The Perfect Boy)
"The Only One" and "Freakshow" are already confirmed to be the first and the second single.
maybe it's a kind of strategy and it could make sense.
they play the 4 songs they're going to release as singles, so that the people already know them when they buy them.
and the other songs kept secret for the album!

but tonight we could have a confirmation or not,
i mean, if they play another new song.... i'm wrong !   :-D

I didn't realize that being an obnoxious, knock-everybody-over type crowd was really such a plus?  Believe me, I've been to shows like this in the U.S. and they are really not my idea of a good time.

Maybe these people are simply enjoying the music?  At least this is pretty much how I am when I go to a concert of a band I really like.

By the way, Robert has said in the past that U.S. crowds are pretty loud compared to a lot of other places — but maybe we just don't make asses of ourselves *during* the songs?  ;)

P.S.  How can you blame anybody for a lack of enthusiasm with this setlist?

hmm,
actually that's not to blame anyone or to say this is better and this is worse.
i think jb was just underlining the differencies between this two different types of attending a show.

and if i had to express an opinion, if i would be in a band playing in front of people, i'd like more to see them moving with some stuff (that's why friday i'm in love and a lot of other songs are still played) than to see them still.
obviuosly, in other songs "enjoying the music" is the most important thing (in the atmospheric ones, for instance)
shame i don't play in front of 15000 people!!!  :-D

and lostflower4, this kind of setlist is right for that purpose, a lot of pop songs that should make you jump,or at least move...
instead it's not the setlist maybe for a fan, who loves the other side of the band....and which would like to simply enjoy the music.

but we all know, the cure have always had the two sides.
and i'm unhappy with some choices, too (especially about the fact they're too static with the set)

just my two cents.

It was a pretty safe show.  I was really thinking they'd go with Open/End and have a few songs like Fascination Street and A Night Like This in the set.  Plainsong, Prayers For Rain, and A Strange Day, while not a surprise, is a great way to start a gig.  Glad to know they didn't shy away from that.  Including Shake Dog Shake on opening night is also something I didn't expect and would consider that a good sign of things to come, even if it means that they just play that one more.

well, i never said i'd want the other extreme, some kind of screaming jumping pushing riot: i mean, at least in my opinion there can always be something in between these two(?).

anyway, like said, i was simply pointing out the difference in the crowd behavior. besides, there are big differences in the crowds in different parts of europe. in the south they tend to be wilder and louder - not something i always hugely enjoy, by the way. scandinavian and northern german crowds are usually much more reserved and held back. but even in stockholm i think i saw much more movement and raised hands etc. during pop songs/singles. so i was simply paying attention to the fact that the band was actually playing one of their probably biggest and widely known songs ('friday...') and even then people look surprisingly much like mall people (in jeff words). so i simply found that something that caught my eye when i was watching the video. i was expecting a bit more reaction, considering which song it was.
anyway, no need for anyone to get so defensive: i don't think i was saying "US crowds suck!" or something like that. please note that i wasn't even saying european crowds are somehow "better" - i just said that i found that "weird" (as it depends on what you're used to yourself). so it was just a personal observation, nothing more.
but nevermind.

It's really a pitty. I don't think the guys enjoy too much with people watching them like statues (after seeing all the excitement in Europe). As I said last year, is time they make the big step and go further to south later: Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina; if they want to find a more passionate crowd.

I think the reaction IN BETWEEN songs is what's most important to the band. So let's see/hear what that's like before we make too many judgments.  :smth023

Dude, I think Robert enjoy more enthusiastic audiences. I remember very clear in Paris how happy he was all the time, but in Oberhausen he was not sooo excited (because people was so static there). I really do think Robert likes more when people shows this kind of passion (http://youtube.com/watch?v=X4UUm7h62Fs).

Thanks to j for all of his coverage from the Fairfax show and to all who have posted a review.  :smth023

Looks like it was a decent show & hopefully everyone had a great time!  From the youtube clip the crowd does seem a bit lifeless but I think as the tour moves on it will get better. Maybe the fans in the Fairfax area are more reserved than lets say LA or NYC???  I've been to several concerts for various different bands both in the UK & USA and it really depends on the age of the audience, who is performing and the type of people attending that makes a crowed more into the music than other places.  Typically I think US fans get a bit more crazy but I'm only saying that from my past experiences from shows I've attended in both countries.

Even though there were no real surprises with the set-list from last night, I'm really looking forward to seeing them tonight.  I'd like to hear more B-side stuff but hey I'll he happy with anything they played.  It's been a long time since I last saw the Cure so I really don't are what they play are long as they sound good.  :smth020

I agree that Robert enjoys the more enthusiastic crowds.  Citing another example from Paris, the crowd singing the keyboard part during Play For Today.  Robert acknowledged this and played the chords after the song was over so the crowd could continue singing.  That was pretty sweet  :smth023

Other little notable things you see more in Europe, the hands in the sky during FTEOTDGS, answering back with "hello" during Wrong Number, clapping along during A Forest.  Just a few fan interactions that make the show more lively.  And really, there's nothing wrong with moving some during the show.  Pogoing during Push is down right fun!  Now, the "I LOVE YOU ROBERT!" calls and such blow.  There was plenty of that in Europe and will be in the US.  Singing (badly) and continuous talking are two of my pet peeves.

david -WHOA!! talk about crowd energy! they need to put that type of audience display on dvd!
i noticed that in the latin/hispanic countries such as Mexico - the audience is very responsive, and they are PASSIONATE. when i saw them at download festival, i have to admit, much of the crowd was stand and watch (and thats in california). we dont get that arms flailing, massive crowd jumping.. *is very jealous*. but there were some cure fans  that were dancing - around the aisles going from row to row! (most big venues are using seats on the floor) i dont think security managed to apprehend them though. i did dance on my seat the whole time i saw them, even if i was the only one in my section and looked like an idiot. it was my first concert, and although the atmostphere felt lively and beautiful, i couldnt help but feel just slightly dissapointed after watching so much footage of huge crowd participation. i wanted to hear the roar of the crowd as they sang along..
i really hope that near the end of the month theyll be doing some refreshing with the setlist.
i find this annoying - random screams from fans DURING the middle of a song, especially if the scream is near to you. i can barely hear myself talk during the show, so talking from others is hard to hear

Ah, maybe it's just that we're older and more prone to break a hip or something!  It was a pretty middle-aged to aged audience there.  And I was probably one of the 'mall rats'there, just consider it my Mick Dempsey 'dog's breakfast'just rolled out of bed look.

But with FTEOTDGS, Wrong # audience participation, I just don't think that the majority of the people at the show were familiar enough the songs to pick up on those exact cues.  They got it when hit over the head--after the third time Robt said hello, he finally got an answer, but that was more of a give and take between performer and audience rather than an in joke between knowing fan and idol.  So, while they weren't reacting as hardcore fans, they were having a good time and were very vocal and appreciative after the songs, for sure.  My wife and friend are 'çasual' fans so they didn't know to do that stuff, but they were still impressed by their performance and gave it all they had in thanks.  Also when playing the sides during say, 'Never Enough' or LGTB, people were jumping in the aisles for that.  And there were quite a few people stomping and dancing where I was (Sec 101, CC 11) but with the seats on the floor I think it would have been hard to pogo.  I broke into it'a bit for 'Push' but I was in danger of falling over half the time!  The thing is, as far as Robert was concerned we were a pretty damn good audience.  He and Porl genuinely seemed to be loving the crowd very much so.  I also think breaking the curfew and thanking us for making it a 'f*cking excellent' night speaks volumes.

The only goofy thing I witnessed was some guy jumping seats in front of me just to take pics of himself 'rocking out' with the band in the background.  But I just laughed.

As far as performance: Robert's voice was in really, really excellent form, and although Porl's guitar was buried in the mix at times I was able to hear more of what he was playing than the other times I have seen him.  Robert was egging him on quite a bit, which I thought was cool to see--along with shared smiles with Simon and turning his back to face Jason, all added up to a band really enjoying themselves.

The opening trio was incredibly sleek and powerful, like a bullet train.  The crowd was massively appreciative of Robert's held note in 'Prayers'.  They were also grooving to 'The Walk' and of course 'Lovesong' really got them going.  Maybe I'm just making sh*t up, but it seemed Robert was gazing at his ring hand a little at the beginning.  Surprisingly for me, a very animated and fresh sounding Lullaby was an early highlight.  I really enjoyed Robt's guitar work on that, impressive for making an overplayed chestnut like that stand out.  'The Perfect Boy': closest to 'Before Three' a bit in it's sparkling strummed guitar sound, very big and with a yelled chorus, but a little faster and the drums don't gallop around as much and there are starker changes for the chorus.  A bit of the 'he said' 'she said' type lyrics in there, it's definitely an upbeat number, but not in the 'pop' vein insomuch as I wouldn't consider 'Before Three' straight ahead pop like TEOTW or Inbetween Days, more like the power pop of 'Push', which was served incredibly last night, just incredibly done.

Nice interplay btwn Porl and Robt for Hotx3, nice work on FTEOTDGS, I may be in the minority when I say I really liké 'The Only One' AND 'Freakshow' but I honestly was glad to hear them.  'Primary' was too slow for my taste, the pace drags the song down when it should have wings and fly.  TEOTW was off as well.  Supreme filagree of 'To Wish Impossible Things', and the metallic tang of 'Shake Dóg Shake' were great...agree with most that 'Wrong #' works so much better live.  '100 Years' seemed a little thin and clunky at times, a shame, but it finished strong and the transition into 'Disintegration' came off very well.  As did the 'Jumping...'to 'Grinding Halt'one--very nice to hear those.  I haven't caught any of the versions of 'Á Forest' off of the European tour yet--were Robert and Porl doing a very long intro of duelling guitars for this?  It sounded freaking incredible, well done.  'Killing An Arab' was just a towering beast, really furious, even Jason was impressive.  Too bad they had to cut it short, looked like they could have gone on for a while.

As for the lack of variety in the set list, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for a little more of a shake up.  On the other hand, to get a first time ever performance of 'The Perfect Boy' really just not, could not be beat.  And the thing is, I wonder, if I didn't have access to all of the earlier setlists/shows (via the internets) and I had gone into this with only the memory of the previous shows here in MD/VA I think I would have been more blown away by the likes of the 17s and 3IB encores and the new material.  Sure I would have liked say, 'The Kiss' or 'Á Boy I Never Knew' or even 'Forever'(yeah, right) but overall the set was pretty well balanced, maybe leaning towards the 'pop' side of the meter.  But, hey, since it looked like Robert was having a fantastic Friday night of dance hits, I really didn't want to rain on his parade and just ended up having a blast--especially when 'Lovecats' hit, I just forgot about it all.

My friend took some pics, so when I get them, I'll try and up them.  And thanks again to j and others for their reports.

QuoteThough I'm beginning to wonder if we should be seeing a thematic pattern for this album: Robert's lack of children.

Very, very good point!

Thanks j for the setlist and the others for the reviews  :)

You've written a nice review Nicholas. It was like i was there :)
It seems you enjoyed the show very much.

I'm really looking forward to Chicago next week :D

Something to the crowds in Europe:
I have the impression that the people at the shows were at the beginning
reserved, but when the band played e. g. pop song they danced and when it came to the encores they went crazy. That was e.g. the case in London.
What i can remember that the crowd at the seating area didn't stand up until let me say the encores. And for me it was different from city to city. Maybe it has something to do with the temper. In some countries the crowd is more enthusiastic than in other countries. For me a crowd which is enthusiastic is great.

But in the end what really counts is if you enjoyed the concert, had a wonderful time, that you danced, screamed till you were hoarse and went out of the hall with a big smile on your face :)

WOW...just read the five pages of comments and had to join in!
For those worried about merch prices--you have a choice, so make a choice and stop complaining ;)
For those worried about the crowd response--this 37 yr old wife and mother of two who has LOVED the Cure since 1985 didn't sit down from the time they took the stage until I got to the car at 12:30am.  I sang, I screamed, I knew the 'cues' and I danced my a$$ off the entire time!  To hear songs that made me who I am today absolutely blew me away.  No, I didn't hear 'Homesick', but I didn't expect that I would anyway...and let's face it, they can't play EVERYTHING!  In the end, the Cure seemed very pleased with the crowd and if they weren't I don't think they would've played past midnight for us.  An absolutely awesome concert experience of absolutely beautiful music and that's all that counts for this 'Mom'.

thanks nicholas for a review and everyone else for gig comments too.

by the way, about merchandise, in case it's of interest to anyone:
it looks like the US tour has a lot of stuff that wasn't being sold on the european tour - or then some merchandise stands i was visiting had simply very very incomplete selection. anyway, looking at this:
http://www.pbase.com/craigparker/image/96831045
compared to this:
http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,4623.msg44545.html#msg44545

in europe, i don't remember seeing the striped shirts, the shirt with a picture of the band sitting on the ground wasn't available in blue, the t-shirt with red vertical 'the cure' text wasn't available in white.

There are more to come....as well as Philly pics.  there are several pics that may look the same in the thumbnails.  they aren't.  My camera has a "burst" feature that takes picture after picture in rapid succession as long as I keep the button pushed.  If you had all of the pics that look the same on your computer and view them in Windows picture viewer, and click the forward button over and over, it is almost like a video!

they sure are!

it was a good thing I didn't threw away my ticket after I enter the patriot center before one of the female staff asked me if I have a ticket and I ask where am I. it was pretty dark inside and I could barely see where my seat is and I had to find a closet seat just to make sure I didn't get hurt and not to bump to anyone sitting. I better make sure not to make a minor mistake. I had a great time at the may 9th show I want to say the show was just like heaven!

my third cure show and it was excellent!

as for the crowd.  you must realize this venue is 10,000 seats and every foot of the place has a seat.  not a chair.  a seat.

I was depressed people were not dancing more but it was kind of hard.  It was an intimate evening and i'm grateful for the closeness this venue offered.
All the other shows I've seen are at outdoor pavillions and while you can dance on your blanket...you are also watching a tv screen to see anything.

Unless you actually chatted to RS about the show, please don't speculate on feelings.

Everyone was happy. :)

I used one 4gb card, and that wasn't even close to being full with both Fairfax and Philly, plus a few short 30 mb videos

Great show at the Patriot Center ... my 4th Cure show.  The 1st one was
May 26, 1992 at the Cap Center.  That show was also my first date with my
sweetie and she was right there by my side Friday night.   :)

There was a short review of the show in the Washington Post:

Rolling Stone also has a review:
