Zero Assoluto?? No please!!!! :smth011
I can't believe it!! I'm truly happy, so much that still I can't realize this IS actually happening!!
Unfortunately, we'll have to suffer a lot because of those bands before them... :-D
Everything for The Cure.
it's official,
The Cure will play in Rome on October 11th,
likely, they will play the whole album before it gets released.
global airing is very likely to happen.
more info as they become official.
(@labyrinth: just edited the date to fit the year/month/day standard (like with other tour dates), nothing else).
they make it really hard for anyone to say anything about this in advance - sometimes playing the album does work, sometimes it doesn't... we'll see!
but it might be a good thing, especially if the album turns out to have a similar poor-ish sound as the singles: then we'd at least have something to choose from, as we'd have the option of listening the complete album played live. :)
besides at least to me so far the singles worked better live anyway.
so i guess i like the idea.
so, who's going? (don't look at me :-P)
it seems
so far,
me, NeverForget, erpomata , disintegration , Lady , faith77
Now Robert made it official for everyone!

Why couldn't it be the following weekend? :smth100
J: time to send out 100 reschedule notifications!!!

;)
I'm very excited, Thank you Robert!
I can't wait to see this.. Now I gotta work out what time this is in Oz and how to record it!!! any tips on recording a stream will be much appreciated! Yes I know, the Google will help....
See you there guys! ;)
Well, it will be an opportunity to check the new songs before the album comes out...
However, seeing The Cure associated with the coca cola company isn't something that leaves me confortable.

Free entrance. You just go and that's all. No ticket needed. At least, in the event website is nothing about that, just it's written "free entrance".

ah then your guests should be used to your constant juggling of dates!!!
so i couldn´t see any shows this year, becuase of my fight against cancer.
yesterday i have been reading rome, the cure, free entrance, live,.......
what should i say ?
i HAVE to be there. it was one of my wishes ( what should i do before i die ) and in front there was "1. see the cure live as often as i can".
and i thought in february, when i was in hospital and reading the live coverage, i would never see the cure live again.
So, do anybody know a hotel near that place ?
is my 2 year old son allowed to be there ??????
or does anybody knows a babysitter ( apart of the cure ) for my son ?
i can´t wait to be in roma
good luck getting there drowning..

i was born in Roma, and lived for my first ten years, 500 m from s giovanni!
the piazza is used for huge political meetings, or for funerals of important italian people, or for a concert on 1 may every year. it's almost in center of Roma, 3 underground stops from central station, and someone calculated that it can allow around 1.000.000 people! i don't think so, but for a funeral of a politician in 1984 there were around 700.000...it's history! so 100.000 will be comfortable, be sure! it will be free, because it's impossible to put tickets and control entrance!

Imho the fans who live not so far away from italy should find the way for coming...this event is very important and for free; the performances of "the only one" or "freakshow" could become a sort of new videos of these singles, as it happened for "the end of the world" in 2004 and you could say "I was there!" :smth023

They, like the rest of us to one degree or another, are corporate whores.. Or alternatively they see this as a vehicle to send out their renditions of these new songs for their fans in the most widespread way possible...

Rome soundcheck
The Cure have made it safely to Rome, and are doing a soundcheck. They have played Fascination St., The Walk, Friday I'm In Love, Lullaby, Wrong Number, and all of 4:13 Dream!
Taxi booked for 3.30am for the airport. Early start, but gonna be worth it I think. Bring on 'Underneath the stars'!
looks like NO cure show for me 2007/2008
after fighting against cancer during the 4 tour in hospital i was soooo happy as i heard, the cure will play rome. i booked the hotel, and i was looking forward for the concert. ( first cure concert for my son- 2 years old)
i was lucky until yesterday. my wife had a car accident. no one was injuried, but the car is not working anymore.
so no cure in rome for me.
this is not my cure-year :-(
wish you good fun, and enjoy listening to the cure, if you have the chance too.

this is from COF blog
Pietro (5:30pm): Still waiting for the doors to open...Luckily the sun is now behind the buildings; man was it HOT an hour ago!!
Pietro (6:07pm): We're in, but there's only been the first support band, some Italian rapper who was booed off of the stage.
Pietro (7:37pm): The MTV Italy live broadcast has begun.
Pietro(8:02pm): VJ just said that The Cure are scheduled for 11pm.Three more hours...Aargh!!!
Olivier(8:14pm): For now we're enjoying horrible crap music (I didn't say Italian) but it will be worth the wait!
Olivier(9:16pm): RS is being interviewed right now. Said this is the only time they would be playing the whole album live. The second hour will be a very long "greatest hits" encore. "I never ever had writers block!" The new album was recorded as a double, of which 4:13 Dream will be the first part. The second part will be a "dark" album.
Pietro (9:22pm): Robert said the encore would be rather short due to curfew, they had hoped to play longer.
Again the DOUBLR ALBUM mention
Pietro (10:43): The last support act has finished on the 2nd stage. Main stage is now ready for The Cure.

Pietro (11:08): UTS is...Wow!! Only One is as usual, Porl's guitar is unusually low.
Pietro (11:21): Sirensong is on an acoustic, reminds me of Jupiter Crash. Porl is playing a strange instrument, seems like a keyboard, but is not.
Setlist: Underneath The Stars, The Only One, The Reasons Why, Freakshow, Sirensong, The Real Snow White, The Hungry Ghost, Switch, The Perfect Boy, This. Here and Now. With You, Sleep When I'm Dead, The Scream, It's Over.
Robert: "Thank you, that was 4:13 Dream! See you in a second."
Encore: Lullaby, Fascination St., Wrong Number, The End of the World, The Walk, Lovesong, Friday I'm In Love, Inbetween Days, Just Like Heaven, Boys Don't Cry.

I was there...once again in the front row and right in front of Robert!!! :smth050
It was a long and hard wait, 'cos we were forced to listen to all those horrible artists and then there were many "barbarous" not-fan people (when the gates were opened everyone started to push and I lost disintegration, I found him later but he stayed some row behind me :()
Anyway the performance was amazing and full of energy , I think Robert was "sober" and he was very quite and kind with us (I noticed there was many "complicity" between him and us!) and the new songs sounded good, especially "the reasons why"

absolutely AMAZING.
that's all i can say, right now...
the album has to be listened in its studio-version but it has some gems.
yes, the new songs are quite guiter-driven rock, but there's always The Cure touch in them.
first, i didn't like Baby Rag Dog Book (now known as "It's Over")...but i like it live. sure, it's not one of my favourite... but i liked it.
allright, i'll post some pictures soon. and write another topic bigger than this.

I think Robert was "sober"
you mean he was all drunk the last time you saw him play live?
thanks for the youtube links patitodark. however, i'm personally thinking of not checking out the links for all the "new" new songs. this time i'd like to hear the studio versions first, before listening to these live versions...
anyway, anyone has a full version of the mtv broadcast in original quality?

Are you insane?!
This is the best gig I heard in years!
Pretty sure the best since TRILOGY!
F**K waiting!
The concert was GREAT, I was totally catched by the new songs.
From this live preview I can say that I do LOVE Sirensong, The Real Snow White, This. Here and Now. With You...just to mention a few...I like the others very much, I think it's gonna be a faboulous album in studio version too, live was really good...I'm soo happy! :smth049
We've been fighting almost all day, but it was worth the wait and the pain!! :rocker
I'll post my pictures too ;)

You make me remember the days when I also used to refuse hearing a single bit of a new album (besides the singles of course) haha ... GOOD OLD TIMES! but this time I couldnt resist and mainly because of the disappointment from 1996-2004, I was really not expecting too much from Dream 4:13 but I can say that it´s the best album in the "Jason era". I can say also that this album doesn´t bring any great memorable big hit neither.
Porl really enriches the songs with his great musicianship, Simon is good as always! Robert has a little of a sore throat but still his singing is great. Jason... he is playing as usual.
All of the videos are here, including the encore section.

Does anyone have the audio yet?? I still think I'll wait to hear the album first. I haven't watched the videos or anything, I just think it'll be better to listen to the CD first, then the live show.

It's so tempting to watch this! I agree though, as torturous as it may be, I'm going to wait for the album and then watch the concert. And I think I read Robert said it will be the only time they will play this album? That seems so strange to me. No chance for a tour then? :(

Hope not!!! What I understood is that it would be the only time they'd play the whole album... but maybe because I can't wait for a tour and would be very disappointed if there wasn't one...

Well, I've listened to all of it (except the 4 singles) and I think I'm ready to give my first impression. As a whole, this seems to me like one of the most uninspired set of songs The Cure have ever come up with... Maybe even the most uninspired ever? I can't say I'm really disappointed, because all signs until now were not promising at all... Still, some of the "new" new songs are almost shockingly bland.
The good stuff: there's 2 songs (only 2 songs out of 13...) that show what The Cure really are capable of: first, "The Hungry Ghost", which has that mix of mood and trippiness that the band does so well... it sounds like nothing new but it has that classic feeling. Second, and most of all, "The Scream", which is a powerful, haunting, dark song, where The Cure really give it all. It's really this album's GREAT song (yeah, every Cure album, however weak, has at least one great song... I was however almost disparaging when listening to this concert, because "The Scream" only comes at number 12). I almost feel that these 2 songs should have been saved for the promised "dark" album, because here they kind of seem out of place, they are almost too good for the general blandness of "4:13 Dream".
On a more general note, I think this is the first time I have REALLY understood how Jason's drumming is really bland. But then most of these songs probably wouldn't merit classier drumming...
I've uploaded a video I made during the concert, it's THE REASONS WHY, so be careful it's a spoiler for those who don't want to hear nothing before the album release ;)

I was shaking because of the crowd, and in the last part I almost fell!
So, sorry for that, it's not the best video in the world :-D

Totally agree. The Hungry Ghost has that "Cure feeling" we love. But you know what? I strongly believe it's mainly because of the "economical" and hypnotic "Boris Williams' style" Jason plays with. If Jason would play with lots of cymbals as usual and lots of upbeats, hits, toms, etc. (as usual) then the whole feeling of the song would be ruined. But this time he had an acceptable musical taste for the song.

The Scream reminds me of Forever with the intense part at the end of the song.

I like to be fair. I gave that video another watch and, well, I suppose Jason there isn't bad. At least he isn't doing anything that stands out as particularly out of place or damaging to the song. And he seems to be really into it when he's playing, which is always good to see.
And listening to the song for the 3rd time, I really have to confirm that this one has that Cure feeling that pulls you into the song and makes you forget the outside world. I'm not sure if the song itself is great enough to be called a classic, but it has the quality that we should demand from a Cure album track.

No. It wont´ turn into a classic for sure, but probably will be considered in my "best of the Jason era" compilation, along with Fake and Jupiter Crash and a couple more songs.

japanesebaby, I'm with you.. it was "bad" enough hearing the new songs live then the Mix13 versions before hearing the album in full.
The reason I say this is that because listening to an album for the first time should be, in my opinion, done in one unbroken session.
Hearing the songs as singles first will dilute the overall "deflowering" of my first 4:13 Dream experience...
Bring on the album release... I might just take the day off work... if Shaun lets me.....LOL

yes, that's exactly how i feel.
we're told that this "let's reveal everything bit by bit, single by single" is something new, something especially thrilling for the fans, but imo it's only a corporate marketing gimmick in disguise.
in all i think it's a sign of our times, the general lack of so-called "spannungsbogen" (="the self-imposed delay between desire for a thing and the act of reaching out to grasp that thing") in everything.
(of course i'm not saying everyone should feel the same way, i do understand if some people generally do like receiving stuff in small portions which in the end form a whole. nothing wrong in that, it just doesn't work for me. i'm a spannungsbogen kind of person. :))
I guess it depends on what it is you're expecting.. If it's something that means a lot to you and you want it now!!! then for me, it's important to have it all in one full go than in dribs and drabs, but if it's something less interesting, then bits and pieces are ok..

i understand your point perfectly, and i would have tried to follow your path too (not sure i could have resisted, though), if the 4 ugliest productions in 30 years of the cure (i was one click away to say the ugliest ones in 30 years of music, but then i remembered there is also the so-called remix EP), i.e. the singles, had not been released prior to the album.
when this concert was announced, i thought it was the best news for the cure this year, because at least we may have something to listen to, and just hearing the hungry ghost studio version some minutes ago... well, no further comments.
i know nothing, maybe you will enjoy the studio version, but just in case, i would suggest you to have a ready-to-listen version of this concert very close to you, just to hear some depth, dynamics, everything.
the thing is, i don't know if i would have liked sleep when i'm dead the way i do if i first discovered the studio version ; same could be said about wendy time (T+C2 version vs wish version), but here, since we already know 6 studio tracks out of 13, it seems clear that everything has been wendytimed x1000 (i.e. definitely butchered).
& maybe i'm wrong, & maybe i should give several tries, or wait for the finished LP (not bad mp3s) to be released, but right now i am just pissed off.
the rome concert may not be the best, robert's voice seems to suffer from time to time, but i already know it will be the only version of the album i will happen to listen ; and again, i'm more than glad they did this.
and yes, the scream, aka forever version 5 (three>forever>all mine>lost prior to that), the reasons why, this.here and now. with you and some parts of the real snow white are great. but this will all be discussed at the end of the month ;)

you know i'm not disagreeing with you there at all. the main reason i'm doing it (why i've decided to wait) is because i'm actually expecting myself to enjoy the live version a lot more AFTER i've heard the studio version first. it's exactly because i don't expect the studio version sound very good, just like the singles. it's sad to say but the truth is that production of the cure singles have always been similar to that of the album in question. so, if and when the studio album sucks quality-wise (even if it might have some good songs on it), i know i'll be very happy to the live version at hand and then i will really appreciate this broadcast much more than i'd do otherwise. so i'm just sort of building up a opportunity to myself, to really enjoy that live version as much as possible.
and of course i agree with you that the decision to play the whole album live was really the best news for a long time, a really good thing.
ps. i can't bother checking out that 'the hungry ghost' clip because i know i'd just be pissed off, like you.
funny because imo these teasers should be like appetizers: something that make your appetite grow because they taste so very delicious. but for some reason they have become something that eat away your appetite because somebody just threw in way too much salt and then forgot them in the oven for additional two hours so that everything's burned.

Talking about the Cure, maybe they were even worse: after a long while standing in the middle of the kindergarten crowd of coca-cola's Mtv festival, with all the people around full with caffeine drink, that they gave for free everywhere (maybe they were looking for addiction), finally there they were Robert Smith and the Cure. Now, about the old Robert and his beer drift I don't have nothing to add to the things that my friend Sun Of York wrote here in the past, but I have to say that the concert was deadly boring.
Personally, I almost fell asleep all time, and all the people whom I asked about it later told me the same (everyone in Rome was there, virtually). The songs were diffusive and also a bit of a metal stuff, really little of the old ones have been performed, from Close to Me to A forest, and we've seen tons of useless aged rockstar's poses. Maybe I discovered the truth about all this business. Maybe Smith didn't get fat because of too many beers, as our post wrote. Maybe he broadened because of too many cokes. And this hypothesis is surely worse than the other.

Is he a dope??
:smth043 :smth043 :smth043
No normal people..... :smth011
For myself The Cure lost more and more of their "special kind" and in a way they seem to be in a dead-end street. The new songs are to much "wanna sound like something we did effectively in the past" but there's not one divine spark. But it's a question of taste, finally.
i remember thinking that when I first heard 2004's self titled album, that the songs sounded unfinished or like the tracks were demo-sounding.. I hope this album's not the same..
Maybe RS wanted it to sound "back to the roots". A thing I really can't understand. Why to hell they haven't a keyboarder? Many of the songs from the earlier past would be great with some electronics, wouldn't they? The combination of guitars and keys were typical for the best Cure area. I don't like the "new way". Maybe RS has been developed into a bullhead more and more??? Will there be more keyboards on the new album ... more as on "Sleep When I'm Dead".

I'm so sick about this comments about Robert's build! :smth011
First of all I don't understand why we need to speak about this everytime and then I don't find him so fat, maybe this guy was too far from the stage, but who was very close to Bob can confirm he's not so fat at all: he always dresses large shirts and large trousers but live he looks to me taller and thiner!
... just have a look at actual live photographs. He's not looking like Jack Skellington, doesn't he? But fat or not fat. The man is nearly 50 and was never an Adonis. I think he's okay. But he should try a bit harder with his hair style. Sometimes he's looking horrible with his sagging wisps.
I really couldn't care less what Robert or any of the boys looked like.
Robert is always an easy target for suppossed 'reporters' or onlookers as most of these people don't even recognise or care for anyone else involved in The Cure.
I'm sure if I based my opinions on there appearence I would never have dared to show any interest in the band at all at any point in their career.
Personally, from my point of view I find it quite refreshing in these media frenzied and political correctness times that he has so far refused to simply become some sort of apologist and revert to what he is 'supposed to' look like according to his age etc. Because he is in the public eye he suddenly has to dress/appear like every other 50 year old man?
And I suppose by such rationale he should quit just put his feet up and watch the Discovery Channel, like every other 50 year old man/

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. King in concert two summers ago, and while I've never been a huge blues fan, it was still an enjoyable experience.
That guy can still play with a passion and energy that many artists 1/4 his age cannot approach. And still so much power in his voice, it was almost hard to believe.
A great all-around entertainer, and I can see him still going for a few more years.

well my post was 110% ironic, if you didn't notice. i think the "fat people can't be rockstars" statement in that review was just so dumb.
i'm no blues fan either but nevertheless i have no doubt whatsoever that bb king kicks ass in his own field of music, that's for sure. but we shouldn't consider him a living blues legend - just because he is actually quite overweight? ok that's just dumb.

Sorry, it went right over my head this time.
The concert on YouTube:
The Cure - 2008 10 11 Rome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUS7Cg0X7BE#ws)
Well, it's been a long time, but since we really haven't heard any new material by the Cure since 2008, perhaps it's still relevant to bring up this thread. Anyway, my 2 cents:
1. I'm still not confortable with the band playing a concert sponsored by Coca Cola. I mean, I even like the drink itself, but I think art and big corporations should be kept apart as much as possible.
2. It was a brave thing for them to play the whole new album from beginning to end, when no one in the public new the songs at all (well, 4 singles had already been released, but since none of those were hits it's a fair assumption to make that most in the audience didn't even know those).
3. It was brave but it was also unwise, simply because the new material was not up to Cure standards. There were only 3 really good songs - 'Underneath the Stars', 'The Hungry Ghost' (very superior to the studio version), and 'The Scream', and of these 3 I think only the last one can be called a classic.
4. It is true that in general these live versions sound clearly superior to the studio ones - more natural, more organic, better sung, etc.

I don't agree. I prefer e.g. "Sleep When I'm Dead" over "The Scream"...

Well, I think "Sleep When I'm Dead" had potential. Before the release of the single there was a snippet available at thecure.com that was basically a few seconds looped ad-infinitum and it was promising... I just don't think the band developed the song in the best way possible. As I wrote back in the day, the song would have sounded better if they had recorded it with driving rhythm acoustic guitars, a la 'In Between Days'...
