Title: Talking about lines...
Post by: Lady on November 19, 2007, 18:48:14
Listening to THE CATERPILLAR, I find the lines are very original and strange, especially:

"Dust my lemon lies
With powder pink and sweet"

This topic is not just for "your favourite lines", but also for every lines that you find strange, original, touching, apparently nonsensical, etc. ;)

I really like

"Tear out the pages with all the bad news"

Doing the unstuck is not one of my favourite songs but this line is really brilliant and really happy i think.

I also like
"the idea of perfection holds me" and "Painted like an unknown saint"
from Faith but i like them when i feel sad or depressed. Oh and "perfect moments wait" but these make me cry

I think thats it for now...

I went a away with nothing left ... but faith

how the end always is ...

I won't ever take it if i never give
If i never live ...

Tear out the pages with all the bad news

One of my favourite lines are: I walk wondering why the same dream so many times.
I can't explain it, but i like it very very much :)

For the longest time my mom and I thought the lyrics in "A Night Like This" were as follows:

Quote"You're just the most gorgeously stupid thing I've ever cut in the world"

Whereas it's actually:

Quote"Your trust; the most gorgeously stupid thing I've ever cut in the world"

It's still a fantastic line...

I also love "Eyes like ice don't move" which has been used a few times...I may be paraphrasing.  :smth020

There are so many great lines, so I find this really hard, but -
"and the way the rain comes down hard, that's how I feel inside", and
"please stop loving me, I am none of these things",
have been favourites of mine for years.

For last few months though,
"I never said I would stay 'til the end" and "And both of us knew how the ending would be", have been especially significant.  Totally overwhelming and sad for me, but at the same time comforting...

"Trust in me throught closing years, perfect moments wait, if only we could stay..."
and  "please say the right words, or cry like the stone white clown and stand, lost forever in a happy crowd" from faith! Is fantastic for me!

Yes, I find this line so interesting, I don't know why...maybe 'cos the idea of perfection holds me, too! :-D

This one by "plainsong" is simple but so sweet!

"Sometimes you make me feel
Like I'm living at the edge of the world"

My Favorite's always been from "Primary.

"The Further We Go, and Older We Grow, The More We Know, The Less We Show"

It seems chanting in a melody sort of way.

This one by CATCH:

And sometimes we would spend the night
Just rolling about on the floor
And I remember even though it felt soft at the time
I always used to wake up sore...

At the beginning it's sensual and then becomes almost comic...it makes me smile! :smth043

Yes, this could make me smile also :)

What makes me smile is this one from Mint Car:
The sun is up
I'm so happy i could scream
And there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be
Than here with you ...

Poetics from A Letter To Elise:
Every time I try to pick it up like falling sand,
As Fast as I pick it up, it runs away from my clutching hands.

I've always found this line from Push awkward....

"Smear that man across the wall like strawberries and cream"

Why would someone pleasure the experience of smudging strawberries and cream against the wall rather then eating it?

:-D Here are some of my fav's off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are a lot more...

~ Shiver and Shake
You're just three sick holes that run like sores, you're a f*cking waste

~ FTEOTDGS
I've never been so colourfully-see-through-head before
I've never been so wonderfully-me-you-want-some-more

~ The Upstairs Room
Oh the kiss
So alcoholic and slow

~ If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
Then an angel would come
With burning eyes like stars
And bury us deep
In his velvet arms

Ummm.... that's it for now!!  :smth001

"Dropping through the sky,
through the glass of the roof,
through the roof of your mouth,
through the mouth of your eye,
through the eye of the needle,
it's easier for me to get closer to heaven
than ever feel whole again"

The imagery this evokes is excellent.
Shrinking to nothing and feeling closer to death than life ...
It's poetic and heartbreaking. And scary.

i know its useless to ask "what does it mean?" about many cure lyrics, because pretty often there's no such a "meaning" behind many of the lines, just images... anyway, i've always been bothered by the lines "if you slip going under, slip over my shoulder" in fascination street. it just never made any sort of sense, as some sort of word-play only. so i've always wondered if that one's actually supposed to mean/stand for something...(?). but i was always somehow shy to ask... maybe some native english-speaker might be able to clarify this....
Title: Re: Talking about lines...

I think those lines in Fascination Street are just a play on words to make it fit, though i could be wrong.

Some of my favourite lines ever have to be:

"So i try, put your haaaaaandddss in the sky,
Surrender, remember,
We will be here forever and never say, goodbye."

"I think ive reached that point,
Where every word that you write,
Of every blood dark sea
And every soul black night
And every dream you dream me in.......
Its just the same old song."

"now i know im breaking to pieces
Pull out my heart and ill feed into anyone....
From the eye of the needle its easier for me
To get closer to heaven than ever feel whole again."

"So comfortable
So habitual
And so 'nothing left to say'."

Theres just too much this guys written about that sums up my life!  ;)

"Let me take your hand

All over the windows and the floors

"The other one feeds on my hesitation
Grows inside of my trepidaton
Buries his claws in my dislocation

Have been fascinated and enthralled by this song from the moment I first heard it.
Not sure what the lyrics mean but can somehow relate to it.

This Morning
"The dawn call was broken, short, disconnected, far away
I couldn't understand too much of what was being said
A matter of minutes, peacefully, so sorry
I had to think to breathe, my heart bursting in my head
We moved in silence through a slowly waking world of pale grey rain
And as we drove, a strange sun split the sky
In that moment, I knew that nothing would ever be the same again"

I love the imagery those lines invoke..for me it's spellbinding
Sums up a situation for me perfectly

Lady,

I really love this topic! Great idea..there are so many lines that keep haunting me  everyday depends on certain situation n occasion.

For me,

This one from The Drowning Man,

I wish it was all true
I wish it couldn't be a story
The words all left me
Lifeless
Hoping
Breathing like the drowning man

One line that's always stuck with me, not for its being particularly poetic or beautiful sounding but for how with very simple words it conveys a sort of hopelessness..

one mile in the air that's where she lives
her body looks so thin and pink and small
dropping eggs from nervous shaking hands
and swallowing her fingers as they fall
two people dance on the edge:three of us push them away
there's nowhere to go we're all in this
but nothing can hurt us at all
fight her all you want you'll never win
couldn't we just once leave her in bed
let the dry air cut her happy throat
hide her heart and lose her happy head
first I was a murderer then I was a saint
now I live on stolen time twist and run like paint
like an animal
tuesday in the sun nothing could be worse
not now not ever not anymore....

Yesterday I was bugging practically everyone I saw asking them if they had ever heard the line "I chose an eternity of this" because I couldn't remember what it was from and I kept thinking of it. I was sure it was the first line of a poem I really liked. You know when you get stuck on something and it bugs the hell out of you until you figure it out? And then it finally hit me.....

I chose an eternity of this
like falling angels
the world disappeared
laughing into the fire
is it always like this?

here's a piece of lyrics i've always found to be unintentionally funny:

you the one that looks like christmas

i suppose "christmas" is supposed to mean something positive, something gorgeous and tempting - but if it was up to me to decide how to use that expression, it would be pretty much the opposite: if i'd say something like "that guy, he looks like christmas" then that would certainly mean he's the silliest looking hoser with an award-winning lack of style that i ever saw.  :-D

maybe some discussions should be made individual topics.

to stay on-topic and swing the mood a bit, here's a piece of lyrics i've always found to be unintentionally funny:

I'm never quite sure when a discussion inspired by the original topic starts being "off topic"...
Are you sure the humor is unintentional? Irony is always lurking under Robert's "happy" lyrics... Well, maybe not as much in the latest records, but still... When I hear him siging something like this I always picture a sarcastic smirk on his face.  ;)

i know what you mean and i mostly agree. and i guess it's supposed to be sarcastic, yes. but for some reason i think it somehow fails - it's just so.... dumb-ish. kind of hillbilly-ish, sort of...
for some reason i don't find it witty, like most of his other "happy" lyrics.
so maybe i react to it in an "oh no" kind of way, because it's so rare that robert would fall on the dumb side.
i really don't know why i react to it like that, but it always embarrasses me a bit, every time i hear it. hah.

This one by "plainsong" is simple but so sweet!

"Sometimes you make me feel
Like I'm living at the edge of the world"

Indeed. Pretty much every line on the album Disintegration is one of my favourites. Especially 'Pictures of You', I think everyone can relate to that song. I also like:

"hold me like this for a hundred, thousand, million days"
"distant noises, other voices"
"daylight licked me into shape, must have been asleep for days"
etc... every word and line is brilliant!

personally, i like it because it's nice to see Robert all silly sometimes. That's why I watch the "Friday I'm In Love" video a lot. I love seeing him dance around all happy and silly. But, I can see how some fans wouldn't like the line, you're the one who looks like Christmas. There are many sides of Robert, and I love them all, haha.

The Cure have so many great lines in their songs that this thread could go on forever...

Some of my favourite have already been mentioned, so instead of repeating them I´ll just post some great ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

You carry your love in a trinket
Hanging round your throat
Always inviting
Always exciting
But I must not take off my coat

(It's Not You)

Strangers
Nobody knows we love
I catch your eyes in the dark
One look relives the memory
Remember me
The way I used to be

(Secrets)

One by one her senses die
The memories fade
And leave her eyes
Still seeing worlds that never were
And one by one the bright birds leave her ...

(The Drowning Man)

The very first time I touched your skin
I thought of a story
And rushed to reach the end
Too soon

(Primary)

A hundred other words blind me with your purity
Like an old painted doll in the throes of dance
I think about tomorrow

(The Figurehead)

Remember the time that you rained all night
The queen of Siam in my arms
Remember the time that the islands sank
But nobody opened their eyes

(Just One Kiss)

I kissed you in the water
And made your dry lips sing
I saw you look
Like a Japanese baby
In an instant I remembered everything

(The Walk)

Flowers in your mouth and the same dry
Song the routine from laughter land
16 white legs and a row of teeth
I watch you in secrecy

(Piggy in the mirror)

A palace of stones
Of your bananafish bones
I'll buy you a hundred years old
To celebrate our difference
Theorise and talk yourself
Until you're tired and old

(Bananafishbones)

Tell me who doesn't love
What can never come back
You can never forget how it used to feel

(The Blood)

All this in an instant
before i can kiss you
a woman now standing
were once there was only a girl

(Last dance)

and face pushed deep
reflections meet
the strangest twist upon your lips
and disappear
the ripples clear
and laughing break
against your feet
and laughing break the mirror sweet
"so we shall be together..."

(The Same Deep Water as You)

I really think the great flow stops at 'Disintegration', although both THOTD and KMKMKM were generally far from great, lyrically. 'Wish' also has some good lines but I think they have already been mentioned...

And here are a few more good ones:

Look into my eyes
We both smile
I could kill you
Without trying
That's accuracy

(Accuracy)

Shifting crimson veil
Silken hips slide
Under my hand
Swollen lips whisper
My name
And I yearn
You take me in your arms
And start to burn

(Fire in Cairo)

Drifting up the stairs
I see the steps behind me
Disappearing
Can you help me?

(Three Imaginary Boys)

Everyone's happy
They're finally all the same
'cause everyone's jumping
Everyone else's train

(Jumping Someone Else's Train)

I stand and hear my voice
Cry out
A wordless scream at ancient power
It breaks against stone
I softly leave you crying
I cannot hold what you devour

(The holy hour)

How can you ever let
My hope turn to despair?
How can you ever stop
Pretending?

(Ocean)

Christmas falls late now, flatter and colder
And never as bright as when we used to fall
Even if we drink I don't think we would kiss
In the way that we did when the woman was only a girl

~Last Dance

Another Christmas reference(The Snakepit; Lets go to Bed, etc.. )and he captures that undercurrent of melancholia and nostalgia associated with the holiday.

Yeah, there are definitely too many great lines in The Cure's lyrics to mention them all here. Many (most?) have already been mentioned... My favourites are mostly on the albums 'Pornography', 'Disintegration' and 'The Top'. Also on 'Faith'. But there are also some other very good ones that I think haven't been mentioned in this thread yet, so here they go:

This Twilight Garden:

I lift my lips from kissing you
To kiss the sky, cloud soft and blue
And slow the sun melts down
Into your golden words for me

Fear of Ghosts:

and the further i get
from the things that i care about
the less i care about
how much further away i get...

Birdmad Girl:

She flies outside this cage
Singing girl-mad words
I keep her dark thoughts deep inside
As black as stone
As mad as birds

Snow in Summer:

high up on this mountain
the whole world looks so small
and all the rivers
run away
slipping in your soft white heart
i drink you as i swim
and i'm falling
and i'm falling with you
fall beneath my skin

Any love you once felt for me
Has turned into this travesty
Of selfishness and jealousy
So why can't I just let you go?

Love this ending of Trap.

There is no terror in my heart
Death is with us all
We suck him down with our first breath
And spit him out as we fall

Us or Them,...so gloomy.
