I had a request in my YouTube comments for the lyrics to this song, so did a quick transcription attempt, as below. When I realised the person asking was SueC from here we started a conversation around the song, which she rightly pointed out would probably be better on here, so lazy as I am, I'll just copy and paste the thing wholesale...

Here's the song on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB5S3r0zatw

----------------------------------------

Sue:

I'm finding it extremely difficult to make out the lyrics - do you know what they are / where to find?  Cheers, from Sue.

---

Me:

The lyrics of All Mine are always improvised on the spot at each performance, though often around certain themes and phrases. I've tried transcribing a few versions previously that you can find on my channel, but haven't done this one before. Here's my first attempt, which I'll also put in the description

[???] and the way you always [open] me so far again
Open up the doors you said we come to talk to you
And always come in sorrow
Looking for the safe, same old always
Same hold over you
[Just] one [look] at those summer [things]
Turn away, turn away from you
Same hold over you
Safe if I save you there
Couldn't I save you?
wonder if i can
wonder if i care
You are a thing to me to behold
Oh your name is....
Over there you're waiting for him
Turn away to go, the last place is somewhere [beautiful?]
As i see your eyes calling
Say this is always [seeming] to fall away.

?????? one more time
[Fighting] over you
?????? so I feel
In your face I can see ???
See you always go ???
Always go, always

?????
????? [like a cat?]
?????
?????

Always .... see my face again
And [always] her eyes will go
Nothing will make me stay
And nothing will make her go
But we stand looking at each other
We stand looking at each other for days and days and days and days

Sue:

Thank you so much for that information, and the attempted deciphering! :-)  That's so helpful.  I don't particularly love Disc 1 of Join The Dots, but this kind of track does appeal to me - or at least to the deep dark gloomy 20-something that still lives in me somewhere! ;-)

---

Me:

Is this Sue from curefans I'm talking to? If so sorry, I didn't realise that before!

Anyway, to give a quick(ish) history off this song, there's a mostly instrumental on 1980's Seventeen Seconds called Three:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y2dh14HWWY

They sometimes played this live in 1980 and Robert improvised vocals on top, the most famous example being a happy birthday version to Simon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ipVgMPeLDw

The reason this altered version ended up being called Forever is that in January 1981 they recorded a John Peel studio session on Radio One, and along with early versions of Faith tracks included a version to which they gave that name.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJuT9Usjt-w

Throughout the 1981 tours they played Forever, usually as the final song, again with improvised lyrics. As the tour went on the sound and effects on the song got darker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeB5hLTw7d4

But in 1982, after a few shows where they did the same, they changed the song quite a bit - the chord sequences are different - even darker than before. On many bootlegs from the time the song is either still referred to as Forever, or given a name made-up from some of the decipherable lyrics (e.g. "Face", "All I have to do is kill her"). But after the release of the Curiosity compilation on the cassette B-side of the Concert LP in 1984, the song was referred to as "All Mine" (it's the same truncated version of the full recording released later on Join The Dots). These name oddities have caused much confusion over the years - it was an oft argued point on the old Cure message boards back in the day!

So to finish, here's the full version of the JTD recording. My lyrics transcription is in the description:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZwfsRhnqeI

And here's the other most famous version, that often gets called "All i have to do is kill her" as it was referred to as that on the original vinyl bootleg. It's perhaps the most fully formed version and the clearest lyrics (see first comment)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yDH9Oj4Rnk

After the band split in 1982 the song was never played again, but Forever reappeared in 1983 (very odd version) and 1984 (more like it was originally) and has been an occasionally played classic  ever since - always (I think) as the final song.

So, with that knowledge at hand, if you weren't already, you're now officially a member of the Cure geekdom. ;)

Sue:

Wow, this is like a course!  :-)  Yes, this is SueC, and I should have identified myself properly earlier.  Our YT channel is named after our eco-farm and is mostly about donkeys, building a strawbale house, hippie DIY stuff etc, so to make that association would have been difficult.  The Cure and...kale!  The Cure and...donkeys!  The Cure and...landscape rehabilitation.  The Cure and...compost toilets.  (Well, that one would obviously belong to The Stranglers, with Golden Brown...)

Thank you for the induction into geekdom - now with The Cure!  :-)  The first clip appeared to be an accidental repeat of the main clip, so I found Three off 17 Seconds and listened to that first, before continuing down the list (always nice to have a soundtrack when it's tax/unavoidable paperwork time).

That Happy Birthday song - ROFL.  Talking about the tragedy of never being a teenager again, and being "old" at 20 - it seems that this long-standing "OMG I'm getting old" theme started rather early on.  Is that what comes of being a late addition to a family and feeling like you're the family baby?  Or maybe his parents were like mine, and forever stressing about getting old, which doesn't set a good example (thankfully I married into a different attitude - very helpful).

I was looking on Disc 1 of Join The Dots and couldn't find anything called Forever or All Mine.  The variations do grow to be rather wrist-slitting, or maybe it's just what happens when listening to something like this for 30 minutes instead of 5... who knows... I'll have to come back to it to see if it then improves.  (I have the same problem with Pink Floyd a lot of the time - play it to me for 5 minutes and Iike it, play it for 20 and my head starts to hurt...)

Thank again!  :-)

Me:

Aha, I don;t tend to notice the usernames on here, but when I did I twigged it might be you!
I fixed the link thanks, and you're right - All Mine isn't on JTD but the Pornography deluxe edition. Originally though it was only on the Curiosity cassette which I had back in the late 80s:

http://images.45worlds.com/f/ca/the-cure-concert-the-cure-live-shake-dog-shake-fiction-records-ca.jpg

and All Mine was one of my favourite songs, still is. But the version on there is truncated:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Q5HWaM__M

And it wasn't until some time in the mid ninetees on a Cure message board that I discovered there were other different versions and that the one I had must have a longer form. One of the main reasons I started tape trading concerts was to get hold of the All Mine versions..

On the Happy Birthday version of Forever, yeah, quite a few of those early ones are a bit silly, but the theme of getting old is everywhere in Cure songs. Same as him and you, I've always felt that way - 15 was when it hit me! I think it's a loss of childhood innocence and the ability to live in imaginary worlds as the 'adult' world starts to rip you out. One of the main influences on his early songs was the Fuchsia Groan character in Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast who lives in imaginary worlds. She's mentioned explicitly in The Drowning Man and in other live and early versions of songs.

Drowning Man from Curiosity (live 1981) about the sudden senseless death of Fuchsia:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRUZMIH3UW4

Peel session of The Holy Hour (early version with mostly nonsense lyrics, but first word is Fuchsia - same session as Forever)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsSYtwCQUUU

There also seems to be a childhood incident with a girl - maybe Mary, maybe someone before her - that's referred to in many songs (possibly also the girl in A Forest) and the loss of a childhood love plays into the loss of childhood innocence I think. Did for me anyway! This 1979 song, again unreleased until the deluxe editions (and the basis for the very different "Another Day" on Three Imaginary Boys) captures both themes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHsm-8AB3pk

Another fave. All these songs are.

Anyway, I'd better stop as I could continue this history lecture indefinitely... chuckle

Sue:

Bwahahaha, I know all about situational hypergraphia!  :-)  I shall educate myself further here.  Meanwhile, you might have done this before but anyway, I've only read your mix-tape story - have you recently written up something about being a young person and the popular culture you were into and why - you know, with the massive and quite amazing retrospective telescope offered by midlife?  I think that would be so interesting to read about.  But perhaps I'm just trying to induce someone else to write reams on the Curefan forum so I don't have to stick out like a sore thumb.  ;-)

Seriously though, if you grew up with this stuff that I'm taking to in midlife (and didn't as a teenager), that's a completely different perspective to my Johnny-come-lately, and one really worth having, especially since you're a journal-keeper.  So maybe think about writing something up about it - if you've not got reams of that somewhere already that can be accessed by the public...

-----------------------------------

So here you go, situational hypergraphia transfer complete. I'll also maybe start posting some of the more interesting old uploads on my youtube channel here as threads, in case anyone's interested in discussing them, as long as that's not against policy here. (my channel isn;t monetized or anything so I hope not).

Hullo Matt!  :)  I am interested in how you came to be curating these bootlegs/rare recordings.  It's like a community service to music geeks.  When did you start doing this?  Were you ever in attendance at any of the live recordings?  I probably have a ton of other questions but wouldn't want you to feel like you've got a spotlight pointing in your face... or like you're turning into a Swiss cheese... plus some of those questions are more general cultural ones, which may or may not fit into this thread.  Like, if you were drawn to particular subcultures, with the added benefit of hindsight, why do you think that was?

I like finding out why certain things were significant to people when they were growing up, and why certain things are significant to them now.

Thank you very much for posting this excellent piece of Cure song history! I knew some of it, but you explained the connections between the songs/titles very well!  :smth023

Well I had the ultimate pleasure of listening to a long live version of "Forever" (yes last song) at the concert in Dresden (open air) back in 1998!  :happy

I am still looking out for a (bootleg) recording of it, so if anyone knows one, please tell us about it.  :cool

Hi Ulrich, no problem! I just uploaded the Dresden Forever you're looking for:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc9uimlsR_g

That copy is mine from CD and I only really upload single song performances that are anomalous or special to me, but there's also a French guy who's uploaded huge numbers of entire Cure shows to YouTube, including the Dresden show, so you can listed to it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBSTTh0AdbI

Enjoy!

(If anyone is looking for the off-topic stuff that ensued, it's now here and if anyone is brave enough to post their dress-up photos from the past, we'd love to see you there!)

Thanks again Matt for doing all this bootleg archiving!   :smth023

Rietan

maybe the longest forever (not in combination with a forest"), Matt, you as encyclopedia maybe can answer this :-)

MAtT

Yes, the one you've posted is the longest version of Forever I've seen, but unlike All Mine I've not heard them all yet I think!

The longest extant version of All Mine is this one I've just posted:

PS: what's the tag to embed video here?

[EDIT] removed embeddedness, not working for me.

Aha! I don't see those symbols but surmised from what you said that the tag is "[youtube]" which worked. Thanks!

Why don't you see those? (How do you go online?)

If you use the "tag" it's more complicated: you'll need to insert only just those "numbers/letters" which identify the video and leave all the rest out...

Don't worry, it's my end not yours!!

I'm an old skool IT geek with a tinfoil hat, who uses very tight browser security by default (in technical terms I filter page elements like CSS, scripts, media, XHR & frames). So sometimes web pages don't work in the usual way for me until I get around to tweaking the settings. Everything works here on my other PC so I just have to copy the settings really... it's pure laziness on my part. Like everything I'll get around to it at some point.... :)

Brett wanted you to know he's taking his hat off to you.  None of our computers run on Windows, it's all LINUX - although he has an encapsulated, virtual-machine version of Windows on the LINUX-OS desktop computer in case he ever wishes to use Photoshop or iTunes.  I never have to see any sort of advertising on the Internet because it's all filtered - indeed, all scripts need permission when a page loads, and we can permit any necessary stuff item by item from the list of denied scripts that comes up.  I get quite a shock when I use the Internet on other people's computers - it's so commercialised, a totally different experience to this tinfoil hat version.

And here's something that did its rounds in Australia that you may or may not have seen before:

Yes, removing all ads is the other motivation. Working in IT I have to deal with the mess other people make of their computers all the time, but like you say, browsing the web on them is a real eye-opener, a completely different online world to the one I've always experienced (first via local proxies to filter the HTML then more recently via easy-to-use in-browser proxy add-ons for Firefox). I think if I couldn't do this I'd probably just leave the internet.

I'm not a Linux person, though with every horror that is a new version of Windows I've thought about becoming one. I'm still stuck on Windows 7 (8 being worse than useless and 10 being way too E.T phone home' for my liking) so I suspect eventually I'll have no choice but to move.

One day... one day...
