Title: How to play a FLAC file?
Post by: dsanchez on October 31, 2006, 15:57:24
It's very simple:

1) First download the Winamp player from http://www.winamp.com/ (if you have this program already installed in your PC skip to step 2)

2) Download the FLAC plug-in for Winamp, and install it. Download it from here

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=143614

If you have problems during the install let us know  :smth023

for  MAC users

you can play  flac files directly on the Roxio´s Toast sofware or with MACamp lite available for free on this URL:

http://www.macamplite.com/

with this you can play mp3, flacs , ogg, aiff, without a problem. runs perfectly on OS X 10.4.7

I know this is an old topic, I'm sorry, but I am having problems.  I am new to the idea of the flac file so I downloaded Winamp and the plugin.  I went to the Preferences section and selected the option to accept the flac file.   When I try to play a flac file, all that happens is the name scrolls in the window and when I press the play button--nothing happens. :(

I think for the last version of Winamp (5.35) you don't even need the plug-in. Download  it here

http://www.winamp.com/player/free

However, regarding your problem, you just need to install (execute) the plug-in. When you do this, you will install the proper files in C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\

Later, when you open Winamp you should be able to listen FLAC files.  :smth023

Thank you for the link, but I do have version 5.35 and the files still won't play.  I'm just gonna remove Winamp and stick to mp3s.  Atleast I know those work.

so come on pc people, some help needed here!  :smth100

I don't think I can help here. I'm still using Winamp 2.95. As far as I'm concerned, that was the best version ever released!

You can find it here, as well as all sorts of other "vintage" programs:

http://www.oldversion.com

I'd say it's a worthwhile downgrade. ;)

Thanks for the link, but there is a problem with it.   When I go to that download site I click on the Version 2.95 link and then all of my windows close and nothing downloads.

Try typing http://download.oldversion.com/winamp295.exe (http://download.oldversion.com/winamp295.exe) into Your adress bar (or just klick the link here) - does that work?

Thanks for the help everyone, but it still won't play.  I'm sticking to good old reliable mp3s!

Have you already installed this?

http://www.imaginary-lemurs.com/flac-1.1.4a.exe

Seriously, installing this should do everything. You can't just magically tell Winamp to play FLAC â€" there needs to be a codec already installed.

I've done everything and nothing works. f*ck it. It's not worth it. :smth011

by the way is winamp the only flac player available for windows? :?:
i really don't know since i'm not on pc.

anyway, sorry to hear about such problems - sounds strange. and i don't want to sound like a smartass but if something's not worth they are the mp3s. :smth011
so, much better option than sticking to those is to encode your flacs to .wav once you've downloaded them and then play/burn those. i can't imagine that wouldn't work. so there's no point/reason to discard flacs altogether.

No, definitely not. If you install the codec, pretty much any media player will play FLAC. But Winamp is the best audio player that I've ever found.

I'll even admit that Windows Media Player is a joke for audio stuff.

@iwannashagsimon: I'm convinced that something is wrong with your computer! :(

@iwannashagsimon

One thing to try. Install Foobar2000, it is a multi format media player and doesn't need plugins to play Flac. You find it here

http://www.foobar2000.org/

I tried it and it works well. Drag and drop files in the player window to play. Let us
know if this didn't help.

Or there's something wrong with the files.  Try downloading some other flac files and give them a go.

VLC media player also plays flac i suppose -  just thinking that if you might happen to have that on your computer already you could give it a try.

i agree that you should try both things mentioned above: try another playter and also try with several different files from different filesets.

I am trying to play FLAC files for the first time and when i put them in my VLC media player them seem to skip a lot.  Do I need to upload a new version of it (I have not in a while) or is my computer too busy or something?  Does anyone have any idea what the problemo is?

Also when I download FLAC using Safari Browser they are downloaded in .flac.text.  Is this a problem or supposed to happen?  Sorry for all of the stupid questions, I just have never used flac before.  Any help would be grealy appreciated.

Ah, a Mac person.

I think japanesebaby knows something about this .txt issue.

yes, that's a weird thing about safari, it sometimes adds these .txt extensions at the end of .flac extensions - to be honest i never understood why it happens.
i don't know other trick than to just remove the extensions manually and make sure .flac is the last extension there. or, download with some other browser. for instance i've never seen the same happen with firefox.

Thanks for your help.  It seems to work just perfectly when I remove the .txt manually.  The reason that I use Safari for downloads is that it seems to go a lot faster on my computer for some reason.  Thanks for your help both Japanesebaby and lostflower.  I just redownloaded the VLC player and everything has worked perfectly after that.

for an audio player with flac support i'd highly recommend ToolPlayer:
http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,3738.msg46888.html#msg46888

beats vlc 60-0.
i've tested pretty much all freeware players and it's really the best i've found.
besides, it supports 24-bit without bugs (which vlc doesn't seem to do) and has more resources/features - yet it's very light and handy.
