with all respect to every other artist,  bowie was the greatest of this century.
I just remember when he shook my hand at teatro brancaccio in rome, maybe 1992.

riposi in pace.

Nice tribute by Brian Eno, also makes me a bit sad...

Quote"I received an email from him seven days ago. It was as funny as always, and as surreal, looping through word games and allusions and all the usual stuff we did. It ended with this sentence: 'Thank you for our good times, brian. they will never rot'. And it was signed 'Dawn'.

"I realise now he was saying goodbye."

I read it, it was very sad to read that indeed.

I wonder if Robert will say anything. In any case, here's an old interview:

Reeves Gabrels has, on Twitter (https://twitter.com/reevesgabrels/status/686479436510658560?lang=es):

Well done, my friend. The world has the music. What I remember most is the laughing.

Siouxsie Sioux on Twitter (https://twitter.com/SiouxsieHQ/status/686617882009202688):

I've been in a total daze all day not believing the very sad news.
Bowie was life-changing and groundbreaking.
I just want to say a huge thank you to the one and only Starman.
Love Siouxsie

She looks pretty gutted.

I don't know wether Robert will find enough strength to say anything soon.
Listening to and watching the Lazarus video must've been close to overkill, and that, even before the news of his death.

Severin, the same, probably even worse than Robert (Severin is from Bromley, and he has a friend who lived two doors next to David Bowie's, and the Banshees were as good as born in that house).
And you know Severin's unwell.

Wonder if Robert's ever said anything on Heroes (the album), just cause it's my favorite. A consummate post punk masterpiece.

Dunno, but he said he got his inspiration for Seventeen Seconds from Nick Drake and Bowie's Low.
But Low and its follow-up Heroes are very similar in sound, so I guess he also liked it.

Yes and no... The first part of Heroes (Beauty And the Beast, Joe the Lion, Blackout) has a jarring, abrasive edge unlike anything on Low, thanks in part to Fripp's guitar.

Quote from: dsanchez on January 11, 2016, 19:08:12I wonder if Robert will say anything.

I don't know wether Robert will find enough strength to say anything soon.
Listening to and watching the Lazarus video must've been close to overkill, and that, even before the news of his death.

Enough time has passed, but I'm not sure all can bear it yet.
I've been unable to listen to Bowie for more than one year.
But life got in the way, and I now think I'm able to, although not as much as I used to.
So here it goes.

I guess that you noticed the Cure and Banshee puns on Lazarus, didn't you?

The wardrobe (Close To Me). The bed (Lullaby). The arms wide open (Just Like Heaven).
A Siouxsie look-alike under the bed (Death in Sandman's comics looked like Siouxsie, Sandman looked like Robert).
The bass, drum and guitar at the end of the song (A Forest, Carnage Visors, Faith).

No, it is NO coincidence.

As for the Banshees... they were from Bromley, like Bowie.
The Banshees first met the Sex Pistols literally two houses away from Bowie's home.
In the same street (Plaistow Grove, next to Sundridge Park station, in Bromley).
Severin is a Bowie fan since nearly the very beginning, and I'm not certain of it, but I suspect he appears on some of the Ziggy Stardust concert video footage.
You can hear the trademark Banshee guitar sound all along Lazarus.
And... who played in the Banshees (and The Glove)? Robert, of course.

Wardrobe - Close To Me.
What does Close To Me say?

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me
Just try to see in the dark
Just try to make it work
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close
I pull my eyes out
Hold my breath and wait until I shake
But if I had your faith
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

Bed-Lullaby.
What does Lullaby say?

(I spy with my little eye)
(Something beginning with S)

On candy stripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and suddenly!
A movement in the corner of the room!
And there is nothing I can do
When I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight!

Quietly he laughs, shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow
And quicker than flies
His arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes
"Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight"

And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning
I will wake up in the shivering cold
And the spiderman is always hungry...

(Come into my parlour)
(Said the spider to the fly)
(I have a little something here)

Arms wide open-Just Like Heaven
What does Just Like Heaven say?

Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream she said
The one that makes me laugh she said
Threw her arms around my neck
Show me how you do it and I'll promise you
I'll promise that I'll run away with you, I'll run away with you
Spinning on that dizzy edge
Kissed her face and kissed her head
Dreamed of all the different ways, I had to make her glow
Why are you so far away she said
Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?
That I'm in love with you?
You, soft and only, you lost and lonely
You, strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream
You're just like a dream
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone, alone, alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved and drowned her deep inside of me
You soft and only
You lost and lonely
You just like heaven

Bass, drum and guitar-A Forest
What does A Forest say?

Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
If you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes
I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees
Into the trees
Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
(Again and again and again and again)
And again

And Faith.
Remember New York ("the time I came to New York"), Madison Square Garden, Quicksand sung by Bowie and WHO ELSE?.
Quicksand goes like this.

I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
Of imagery
I'm living in a silent film
Portraying Himmler's sacred realm
Of dream reality
I'm frightened by the total goal
Drawing to the ragged hole
And I ain't got the power anymore
No, I ain't got the power anymore
I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes
Living proof of Churchill's lies, I'm destiny
I'm torn between the light and dark
Where others see their targets, divine symmetry
Should I kiss the viper's fang?
Or herald loud the death of Man
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore
Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah
I'm not a prophet or a stone-age man
Just a mortal with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it on the next Bardo
I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore
Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah
Don't believe in yourself, don't deceive with belief
Knowledge comes with death's release
Aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah, aah-aah

And Faith goes like this.

Catch me if I fall
I'm losing hold
I can't just carry on this way
And every time
I turn away
Lose another blind game
The idea of perfection holds me
Suddenly I see you change
Everything at once
The same
But the mountain never moves
Rape me like a child
Christened in blood
Painted like an unknown saint
There's nothing left but hope
Your voice is dead
And old
And always empty
Trust in me through closing years
Perfect moments wait
If only we could stay
Please
Say the right words
Or cry like the stone white clown
And stand forever
Lost forever in a happy crowd
No one lifts their hands
No one lifts their eyes
Justified with empty words
The party just gets better and better
I went away alone
With nothing left
But faith

Now apply all of these lyrics in red to someone who has terminal cancer.

What a tremendous genius Bowie is.

Now, this is not possible that this song is just about Bowie.
I am absolutely certain that this is directed at Robert as well.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/jul/02/rock-sideman-earl-slick-bowie-had-gone-levels-into-insanity

QuoteHe was a 22-year-old jobbing musician when Bowie unexpectedly hired him in 1974, on the recommendation of a mutual friend. It was the chance of a lifetime, and a baptism of fire. The Diamond Dogs tour he was booked to play unexpectedly changed so dramatically midway through that one fan remarked "it might as well have been a different artist": out went the glammy theatrics and a set that reportedly cost $1.4m in today's money, and in came a soul-inspired revue. "I didn't understand what the hell was going on," Slick says. "I really didn't. I really wasn't into how it turned out. To me, it turned out to be like a Vegas cabaret act. I might as well have been in a pit orchestra or something. It was pretty weird. Who knew what he was thinking? And that all happened within the first seven or eight months I was working with him, so I learned very quickly he could change with the wind, which happened all the way to the end. There was always a curveball; you never knew what was going to happen next."

Looking back on "Earthling", which was released 25 years ago:

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/david-bowie-earthling/

QuoteBowie began writing for a new album in 1996, soon after the completion of his Outside tour. He had intended on co-producing the LP with Gabrels, whom he called weeks earlier than planned. Luckily, Gabrels had been writing while on tour himself. "I had about eight to 10 instrumental tracks and loops and things like that," the guitarist tells UCR. "And I get a phone call from David, and he goes, 'You know, I was thinking. What are you doing next week?'"

Bowie and Gabrels headed into the studio, where they set up in the control room with an omnidirectional mic in front of them. "We put the loops up that I had written through the speakers in the control room, and he and I would try to write songs [and] chord changes against them," Gabrels said.

By then, the digital Pro Tools was more widely available and helped immensely when it came to piecing songs together. "We would sit there and kind of work out vocal ideas and chords, and solidify it in some way in our mind so that we could at least put down verse-chorus-bridge," Gabrels recalls. "And because we were using a computer, we could chop it up and rearrange it once we had sections."

That piecemeal process yielded "Dead Man Walking," one of Earthling's singles that Bowie said was partly inspired by Neil Young. "It's a reflection on getting older," he noted in a press release at the time. "I recently worked with Neil Young at a benefit. He played acoustically with two members of Crazy Horse, and they would slowly dance in a tight tribal circle. It was so moving, so poignant, they seemed to evoke and bring to life all that their youthful dreams and energies rested on. Rock 'n' roll lives on."
