a really disappointing list of european dates : amazingly few concerts in all (only 12 european shows! come on...). and for instance just one northern europe show (gothenburg).
but well, i didn't except anything better because in 2005 it was almost just the same.

(it will be complete hell for those trying to get any tickets for that date - i already feel sorry for those people who really want the tickets there. i can  still remember the hassle in 2005: i remember seeing some people paying 1000 euros for tickets to the gothenburg show back then. and then there was three concerts in scandinavia, now it's only one - so i suppose it'll be 3000 euros now. good luck, anyone...)

First, I have to say that I find the choice of venues for the U.S. shows to be really odd. What, are they going to be playing halftime shows for NFL games or something?

Secondly, I find it really hard to believe this is all there is going to be for a tour in support of a new album. I can't remember the last time they didn't do least three legs, multiple back-to-back shows in the biggest cities — and all this taking place over the course of a couple years.

Something just doesn't seem right about this. Maybe these are just "warm-up" dates, so to speak.

Or... Maybe they're just getting old and want to keep it short and sweet?  :?

i was actually thinking about the same today.
for instance, even compared to the elevation tour in 2005 (http://www.elevation-tour.com/article381.html), this new list of dates just looks really short. (and even the elevation tour was nowhere near as comprehensive as like some past tours).

I think you meant the Vertigo Tour.  ;)

...which actually turned out to be a lot longer than two legs:

http://www.elevation-tour.com/tour227.html
http://www.elevation-tour.com/tour227.html

Well, maybe this will turn into something more after all. This site says there will likely be more shows added, plus another two legs in 2010. Seems believable to me.

http://www.u2gigs.com

They could easily add something between these that would benefit me.  :D

2009-09-12 - Chicago, Illinois, USA - Soldier Field (30 March)
2009-09-16 - Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Rogers Centre (30 March)

Although I wouldn't rule out traveling a bit to see them. I guess the closet(?) U2 fan in me is coming out.

i've seen them on a stadium once and i'm not sure i'd bother travel for another stadium show. perhaps it's just too big for me these days, you don't get to see as much as you'd want to.
too bad they are too big to ever play (indoor) arena tours anymore.

It seems that they're going to play in milan not just on 7th july, but also on 8th!!!! This news is pretty sure! ;)

Maybe it's the same even for the other countries...

That's a good point. Hopefully they'll add a few smaller venues at some point. But that might be "illegal" considering the trend so far.

Guys, they'll be touring for the remainder of 2009 and well into 2010.  There will be multiple legs, just like past tours  ;)  And it's stadiums only.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/exclusive-u2-to-kiss-the-future-on-global-1003948418.story

I'm a bit sad that no Seattle show was announced.  No, I'm going to Vancouver, but will instead wait for the 2nd or 3rd US leg for a local show.  Summer 2010 at Qwest Field?

Not to mention they signed, if I remember correctly, a deal with Live Nation for about twelve years (http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN3040810420080331). Live Nation only wants make lot of money, so I don't know if small venues are in their plan...

But they'll offer fair ticket prices.  For example they say at least 10,000 tickets per show for $30.  Of course there will be thousands of tickets for $250 as well.

by the way i was just listening to the radio broadcast from 2009-03-11 boston, summerville theatre.
there was an announcer interviewing bono briefly in between the songs.  at some point he mentioned that 'no line on the horizon' had just debuted as number one on a bilboard list.
bono replied:

"we also heard today [...] that it is number one in thirty other countries... [shouting/applause from the crowds]
everywhere except finland. and.... we are very concerned that the finnish have taken against us, because...
...so could you sort that out please? thank you."

oops.

maybe no finnish concerts then, as a revenge...?

(actually i think it DID go to #1 here too, at least that's what i saw. maybe it got out a few days later and the info hadn't reached the statistics yet or something).

Sorry but how does it work with U2?

I am subscribed to the website but never got any code for any of the "pre-sale" shows?

I also noticed that I can "upgrade" my subscription (which means pay some extra money). Only people with a payed subscription get such codes? :?

All shows on pre-sale are sold out :?

Yes, my account is working, I am logged in in u2.com right now. But that page sucks. I am logged in, yet it ask me if I want to "sign up" for the pre-sale (in my case de polish show). Also, next to this show is the link "subscribe" (for the pre-sale), I click there and it takes me to this page with the photo of the band. Why they don't put a message "you have been sucesfully subscribed" and stuff? :?

By the way, the first show in Milano was sold out, both Amsterdam sold out, both Goteburg sold out. Is there any more succesful band other than U2?

Yeah, I found their page somewhat confusing, too.  In a way I'm glad they haven't added a Seattle show yet.  But after looking at some things I noticed they said I'll be eligible for the second group of presales.  They're running the in groups of three.  Long time members get first crack at tickets, the newest members get last.  I guess I signed up in time to be in the middle.

I remember the last time U2 tickets went on sale quite well.  There was one Seattle date in an 18,000 seat arena.  After reading reports that second dates were being added as shows sold out, I wasn't too worried about getting a ticket.  As tickets went on sale for the first show, I was in an online queue which said my estimated wait time was 9 minutes!  Now we all know that the show would be well sold out by that time.  What ended up happening was it did sell out, a second show was immediately added, and my place in line (on Ticketmaster's website) just carried over to the added date.  I had know idea that would happen and was one of the few times I was pleased with TM.  Two more minutes of waiting (impatiently) and I scored the ticket I wanted.  Some good seats, pretty much centered in the lower bowl.  Tried to get another pair, but had a wait time of 15 minutes.  Of course it had sold out by that time.

17 hours? but looks like that one selling really really slow then. one would rather expect the GA area to be sold out in 17 minutes or something.

sure, i don't mind them touring. but i meant that if it's about them becoming more U2-ish now, i'm not entirely sure if it's a good thing. i just wouldn't want to see them becoming a stadium band. they are so much better than that imo.

but on the other hand i'm not too surprised. well they already opened for DM a couple years ago (in sweden). and "the U2 connection" has surely been there, gear wise.
it's pretty obvious (the pic by sousous, from nimes 2007):

Your right but that's a simulation, we have the real one in Werchter  :-D

Ahh ok...I understand it now. They're building the stage in Werchter. I thought they were going to play there soon (but I see they won't --> http://u2.com/tour/index/)

The design looks pretty awesome.

No problem, I didn't explain it very well and I guess the dutch words didn't help you very well. It's a try-out.
The builder is a Belgian company from Werchter. And after that the stage moved to Barcelona.

old news for those who read U2 news on a daily basis (i don't, so it was new for me):

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/music/news/have-u2-created-a-monster-with-massive-carbon-footprint-of-360-tour-14388326.html

U2 and Bono's long-held commitment to "save the planet" has come into question after it emerged they have a carbon footprint big enough to fly the band to Mars and back.

The Irish rockers campaign to fight poverty and AIDS in Africa and Bono called on the world's population to take better care of the earth.

Speaking in Tokyo last year he said: "My prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet."

However, according to an environmentalists' website, the band's 100-date 18-month world tour will see the multi-millionaires clock up an incredible 70,000 air miles in their fuel-guzzling private jet.

The £90m U2360 tour also features three 390-tonne stages criss-crossing the globe, along with 200 crew and backstage staff.

The opening night in Barcelona's Nou Camp last week featured the space station-style stage and satellite link-up with the International Space Station.

Perhaps appropriately, the tour's carbon footprint can also be measured in space terms, with their colossal emissions of up to 65,000 tonnes of CO2 enough to fly Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr from earth to the planet Mars — and back.

U2's CO2 emissions are the equivalent of the waste created by 6,500 average British or Irish people in an entire year, or equal to leaving a standard 100 watt lightbulb on for 159,000 years.

The band's vast emissions are dozens of times bigger than Madonna's carbon footprint on her 2006 world tour, despite her extravagant demands and 250 staff. She produced 1,635 tonnes in air transport.

U2's PR agency RMP did not return a request asking if the band were buying carbon offsets to contribute towards the damage of their enormous emissions.

Carbonfootprint.com's environment consultant Helen Roberts said: "The carbon footprint generated by U2's 44 concerts this year is equal to carbon created by the four band members travelling the 34.125 million miles from Earth to Mars in a passenger plane.

"You also have to add the carbon emissions from the same number of concerts again next year.

"Just looking at the 44 concerts this year, the band will create enough carbon to fly all 90,000 people attending one of their Wembley concerts to Dublin. To offset this year's carbon emissions, U2 would need to plant 20,118 trees."

Pollution experts said U2's 44 concerts in Europe and North America this year will produce 20,117.50 tonnes of CO2 emissions, unless the band unexpectedly decide to ship to equipment to the US, in which case the footprint would be 5091.41 tonnes.

Bono and his bandmates will generate 64.42 tonnes of CO2 by flying 22,037 miles to this year's gigs in their private jet, currently stationed at Nice airport, near their Cote d'Azur holiday villas in the south of France.

Most of the carbon footprint comes from transporting the three 390-tonne stages, using 3,286.60 tonnes of CO2, with another 916.07 tonnes for extra equipment. Next year they are expected to play 20 concerts in North America in June and July and 20 dates in Europe in August and September.

very good and ironic points. "my prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet" - *ironic LOL*

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  For the presales, you must have registered at their forum by a specific date.  I believe there are several presales.  The first being for long time members.  Next would be for those in the middle.  And finally one for those that have just signed up.

just my opinion but i really dislike these band sites where you need to pay for the membership.

they sold out the finnish olympic stadium so fast that the band added a second show, due to huge demand for tickets.
the second one sold out within minutes too. i guess it's partially because they don't play other scandinavian shows this time.

Just as I figured.  More US dates announced after the first leg of the US tour.  Seems they'll come back here before leg two in Europe.

6 June, 2010    Anaheim    CA    US    Angel Stadium
12 June, 2010    Denver    CO    US    Invesco Field
16 June, 2010    Oakland    CA    US    Oakland Coliseum
20 June, 2010    Seattle    WA    US    Qwest Field
23 June, 2010    Edmonton    CA    Commonwealth Stadium
30 June, 2010    East Lansing    MI    Spartan Stadium
3 July, 2010    Toronto    ON    CA    Rogers Centre
6 July, 2010    Chicago    IL    US    Soldier Field
9 July, 2010    Miami    FL    US    Land Shark Stadium
12 July, 2010    Philadelphia    PA    Lincoln Financial Field
16 July, 2010    Montreal    QC    Venue TBA
19 July, 2010    New York    NY    New Meadowlands Stadium

Lots of gaps = room for shows to be added, though Toronto and Chicago will be one show only.  Pencil me in for Seattle.   :)

Huh, I wish I had been paying more attention to this. Tickets for the Minneapolis show went on sale a couple weeks ago, so I guess now all the prime ones will be scalped for $700 or something like that. Great!

But in all reality, the chances of getting something good from the get-go would have probably been slim anyway. At least that's my experience with Ticketmaster and high-demand shows. I'd probably have to end up pursuing other avenues anyway. Mind you, this is all assuming I really want to see them after all.   8)

sorry, it's in Spanish. I wish they would invite Robert Smith, too

sorry but imo thats' just silly. having sting & bono (or robert smith) singing at the top of machu picchu - i mean, seriously. they should promote some local traditional/folk music artists and musicians, to celebrate the local, original culture and not invite some millionaire megastars that have absolutely zero to do with the whole thing and zero connection to it - and who also are only part of the western european traditions who originally ultimately caused the downfall of the whole place and the whole of the inca civilization.

(and ok i can see it already: "people abroad wouldn't know some local artists, we need some big names to promote the event" & blahblahblah. but in that case, what's the whole point anyway? in that case there is none. ;))

Machu Picchu is patrimony of the world so I don't see nothing bad bringing those artists there. The institution who organize this is charged of the tourism promotion so I think is a great idea. There's already an event in June to celebrate the local, original culture: The Inti Raimy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inti_Raymi).

Anyway, I just think of the outstanding Jean Michel Jarre concert at the Pyramids of Giza and I don't see a reason why he couldn't have played there.

Again, it would be awesome to see Bob there but I think it's just a dream

machu picchu has suffered from too much tourism for already years and it's currently on the list of the most endangered world heritage sites in the world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/6267197/Machu-Picchu-and-Gaudi-church-among-world-heritage-sites-at-risk.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/6267197/Machu-Picchu-and-Gaudi-church-among-world-heritage-sites-at-risk.html)

already in 2002 UNESCO had pressed autohirities to limit the number of tourists on the site in order to protect it

http://www.tierramerica.net/english/2005/0507/iarticulo.shtml (http://www.tierramerica.net/english/2005/0507/iarticulo.shtml)

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article1034286.ece (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article1034286.ece)

etc etc.

the very same can be said about the pyramids of giza. so, what do we really want: to protect these ancient sites for the future generations or to ignore their value and fragility and just use them as rock concert arenas etc.? seriously, it should be an easy choice there. sting & co. can sing elsewhere. instead of agreeing to some tourist gimmick like this. why don't they hold a charity concert for these endangered sites? and hold it someplace else than on that fragile endangered site itself.
so for me it's just totally silly to bring some mega-millionaires up there to sing la-la-la. it's all about just promoting MORE and more tourism,  whereas the facts clearly indicate that it should be limited to less than it already is.

i'd like to think that he's (luckily) bright enough to say no to something like that. seriously, would you really like to see him as a clown for some tourist promotion agency? i wouldn't. i'm glad he's no clown for that kind of business but has pretty much retained his self-respect as an artist at least in this respect. doing some real charity (like royal albert hall 2006 etc. sort of events) is a completely different matter.
