I'm looking forward to these Torn Down remixes, as I love all the songs apart from "Cut Here" I can't imagine any of them are very long as the discs contain four tracks per side.

I would be happy if they were like the single mixes of Just Like Heaven, Hot Hot Hot!!! All the Disintegration single mixes and High for example. Just simple mixes that add a bit of dimension to some of the dry album mixes.

I'm excited. I do hope we eventually get those mixes by Mogwai and Cranes. I've been waiting for those for ages. It says all remixes are by Robert himself

Well, I've never been a fan of these "dance" remixes and most of "Mixed up" wasn't to my taste. (I did enjoy the "higher mix" of "High" though. If only more remixes were like that one.)

Seeing Robert "remastered" Mixed Up now, hopefully "Wish" will be next...

I must admit I am quite worried as well about this.

RS is great, but I don´t think we have the same taste in mixing the songs.

Often there are too many things going on at the same time at loud volume. When he have outside help to mix the songs (like Plati) the songs are more clear any precise. I did not like the new mix on Mixed Up. When he mixed Williams drums down, he gets the same problem as Cooper on the albums, it sounds imprecise.

Also the songs on the new "Torn Down" album. I can´t connect the dots and understand why these songs are chosen. Some singles songs, some ambient and some with hard riffs. But let´s wait and see. He might have done something wonderful and created something completely new with this collection.

I was aware of that (which is why I mentioned the "higher mix"), sorry if my reply lead to confusion about this. For a project like "Mixed Up & Torn Down", I myself do not expect just "single mixes", I would expect proper "re-mixes", I'm afraid...  :(

Btw, this has been added since I first saw the news:

QuoteAlso, as of now, 'Torn Down' looks to be getting a wide release, though probably not as a picture disc, on June 8th, 2018. This has not been officially confirmed, but Universal has a listing for it. No word on a wide release for 'Mixed Up' yet.

I'm not worried about the remixes, I don't mind if they're good or bad, I like to discover the song with a cool or radical twist, it's just to have fun with the song.

I'm more afraid about his remasterisation of Mixed Up, because he simply ruined Entreat when he did it on Entreat Plus!

"Online" to promote a "record store" day - sounds like a contradiction to me.

I think RSD is well established now and the idea behind it is that people do go to the record store to check these records out!

I'd love a "Mixed Up box" with ALL the extended versions still unreleased in CD: Primary, Let's go to bed, Just one kiss, The lovecats, In between days, Close to me, A japanese dream, etc. etc...
I still don't understand why those were not included in the double-cd deluxe albums or in "Join the dots"...  :(

Where did these extended mixes appear? I guess on the 12" singles?
(I didn't even know for sure if there is one of "Inbetween days", did I ever hear this one? Also with "A Japanese Dream", which was a b-side! Amazing what kinda stuff is out there...)

Yes, the extended version are those of the 12" singles (but not all of them: "A forest" is simply the album version, "Charlotte sometimes" and "The caterpillar" are identical to the 7" versions, etc.)
The extended version of "Inbetween days" is about one minute longer at the beginning, and has been published in the U.S. edition of the 12".
The 'extended version' of "Close to me" is 6 minutes and a half long and IMHO is much better than the 1990 "Closer mix".

Yep, I do own the 12" (looked for it and found it last night)!  :smth020
(I also own the cd single of "Close to me remix" (1990), but I agree the former is better.)

Still, I think would have replaced tacks 08,09,10 on cd 2, that are remixes 'easily' findable as 'b-sides' on cds from 1990, and replaced them by primary (extended, 1980), the lovecats (extended, 1983), and inbetween days (extended, 1985), that are almost impossible to find (on cds).

Quote
Mixed Up's genesis came from the band's Disintegration album and its accompanying global Prayer Tour. Released in 1989, Disintegration had delivered a triumphant end to the 80s, but the first year of the 90s found The Cure unexpectedly unsettled.

Determined to keep up the momentum of the band's ongoing success, but knowing there were internal tensions to address before heading back into the studio, Robert Smith decided on a different course of action; curating an album of the band's rarer 12" mixes. As work on Mixed Up progressed, Smith realised that some of The Cure's earlier remixes didn't stand up to the newer ones.

Smith singles out Brian 'Chuck' New's dub style remix of 'Pictures Of You' as the one that inspired him to take a more adventurous path. "That mix turned the music on its head, but at the same time left the essential heart of the song intact," he says. "As soon as I heard it, I updated the entire Mixed Up plan. My revised ambition was to compile an album that was contemporary without being dated, immediate without being obvious, musically inspiring, rhythmically exciting and sonically great!"

Two tracks on the album, 'A Forest' and 'The Walk', were not just remixed but entirely re-recorded, as the multi-track tapes for both songs had long been lost. Both songs were reconstructed in the studio with producer Mark Saunders, using original instruments and gear.

The band convened over five days in June 1990 to record a new track for Mixed Up. After a certain amount of fraught experimenting with beats, loops and sequenced bass lines, Smith decided to change the vibe. A demo entitled PhaseAGE that had previously been deemed 'too rock' was committed to tape as 'Never Enough' and was released as a single in September 1990. The 'Closer Mix' of 'Close To Me' soon followed this and both songs were accompanied by customarily deranged Tim Pope videos.

With Mixed Up finally released, Smith felt he could at last move on, confident in a re-energised and re-integrated band. Reflecting on the period, he said: "The whole of 1990 was essentially spent emerging from the shadow of Disintegration, and we managed to do it in a creatively satisfying way; by the end of the year, I couldn't wait to start work on new songs for the next record".

Once the remaining 1981 to 1990 12" / extended mixes were compiled, Smith realised that there were too many for one CD and too few for two CD's. His solution was to deliver an entire disc of brand new mixes – hence Torn Down Mixed Up Extras. "I wanted a 3-disc package, but we didn't have enough 'historic' remixes – for a while I thought the 'extra-extras' CD would be Cure songs re-mixed by choice artists, rather than by choice re-mixers... that then got me thinking maybe I should have a go at one," Smith says. "So in early August 2017, I decided to experiment with 'Three Imaginary Boys'. It is a pretty sparse multi-track; I pulled it apart at home and finished the initial re-mix in one session – and I really enjoyed the whole process".

By choosing favourite songs rather than the usual singles, one of Smith's objectives was to illustrate the variety of the Cure catalogue, and by October of 2017 working on songs in chronological release order, he had remixed entirely the 16 songs that appear on Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018.

For the Torn Down cover, Smith decided on a self-portrait painted in oils during the summer of 1990 which was originally intended as the sleeve for Mixed Up. He chose Torn Down as the title for the 'extra-extras' album inspired by the way he had "torn down" 'Never Enough', stripping the song back to resemble his original 1990 PhaseAGE demo. "I felt it was a good way to bring the project back full circle...in a Mixed Up kind of way" he says.

Disturbs me that the Just Like Heaven Dizzy Mix is included again. Since its also present on Join the dots. Waste of good space for other things. By the way, both lovecats (Bunny mix) and Want (time mix) is now on Spotify hidden under Singles from 1990.

But I admit I was never really fond of remixes in general and found 98% of them pretty useless (and or boring/annoying)...
