Title: What made you feel sad today?
Post by: scatcat on November 16, 2007, 15:08:49
Today I feel sad. After learning of the passing away of a Curefan's family member, I wish to reach out and hug someone, who I have never met, but wish I could hug through the internet.. ~hugs~.. there are no words or special smileys that are appropriate.. Love you.  :smth049

Christmas is never very happy time for me, Mum passed on many years ago near this time, and just feels so far away now.

Iam thinking of someone else who's lost their Mother and wishing time would help, to take away the pain,  :smth056

Feel for you so much also CureFreak ~  :smth058

@Steve,.. I'm sorry about you moggy.. Mine will probably outlive me.. goddman it!!  :smth011 he's 9 years old.. I think that's about 48 or even 56 years in cat time.. older than me.. ( though I have more grey hair!!)  :smth100

I've never had a moggy live so long.. and .. he's my best buddy when my son is gone away with his dad... without my moggy.. there would be no 'me'.. plus, my son would be devastated.. he's had him just before he was 4 years old.. they are 'brothers'.. my 'moggy' licks my son all over when he comes home after a couple of days, plants himself on his bed, and lavishes  the attention and the fact he is home , the 3 of us together. priceles.. :smth045

woke this morning to hear, at 6.30am on the radio, that there has been another shooting. In America, Omaha, Nebraska..a 19 year old guy opened fire on innocent people in a shopping mall. Some dead, many injured, scarred for life by the memories... Just heard he left a suicide note, he had been fired from his job, dropped by his g/friend, and said he "Wanted to go out in a big way" or something similar... he shot people as they were standing at counters, having their xmas presents wrapped... good god... :smth085
All this sadness leaves me exhausted...

Why is it that we get depressed around the holidays? It happens to me all the time.

I guess with the murky weather and cold, having to get out of bed makes us all crankier. Everyone at highschool seems to be in a pissy mood lately. I've begun to have bad dreams about an old friend tormenting me...

See, this friend in my dream, he and I used to hang out alot in 5th and 6th grade. He was my best friend. A few years ago, he completely ditched me when I began showing signs of emotional problems...I had no idea why he would, we were best friends. Now I am a sophomore in high school, going to a school for depressed/suicidal teenagers, I still can't stop thinking about how heartbreaking it was.

I've begun having bad dreams involving this friend, as if he is a symbol of all that can go wrong in a friendship...

Last night, I had a dream that he and I met up and became friends again (start your dream analysis here!!!  ;)), and I believe we were just hanging out and doing what good mates do, right? And he could drive (he probably can now, we're both 15)!

Anyway, he began to start bashing me as we drove around, calling me all kinds of horrible names for no reason, and I began to feel frightened by his actions. It turns out that he was only pretending to be my friend to sabatoge me, and was going to humiliate me or kill me. He ended up ditching me on the side of the road in the desert and driving off.

It was frighteningly real, and I wasn't sure it was a dream until I heard my alarm start beeping.

It happens alot when I am having friend troubles, like right now my good friend is letting some girl get in the way of our friendship, and that's just pissing me off. He doesn't even know her, she's a friend of a classmate of ours, and they chat online all day. Not only am I jealous he has a girlfriend, I'm jealous of all the attention she's getting.

I hope those of you who read that can help me out or give some input on the subject? It's really been bothering me lately.

I just found out a friend of mine from work was bashed while out in a bar late last week.  Apparently there was no reason for the attack - some moron just decided to king hit him.

Luckily my friend's injuries weren't too bad - a horrendously bad black eye and hairline fracture to the cheekbone - and he's back at work now, but he had to spend two days in hospital and may require surgery for his fractured cheekbone.

I just don't understand why some morons decide to just turn on others for no reason?  The absolute stupidity of it - I just don't get it  :(

ooohh f###ck... I am so sorry.. maybe there is some councilling available?  Shock is up first, then , talk about it.. Emotions come, but the more you talk, to someone who is either qualified to help you, or family, or community workers, (do it as soon as you can.), the more relieved of the trauma!
It is difficult, but eases, I have lost a child, It takes time, hug your loved ones, and express your feelings.
I wish I could help you .  :(

That's completely awful...terribly sad.

I almost lost a student in a car accident, he nearly died. Didn't know him much, but visited him in the hospital to show my condolences, it was very upsetting.

Poor kiddies, if only people payed more attention where they were going...it sickens me to watch a man hobble out of a bar on New Years and climb into a car without an escort...people can be so clumsy sometimes.

I hope you feel better. You have my sympathy.  :(

A friend of ours is one ( often on suicide call) and it is amazing how a total stranger, versed in how to help people in such a situation, can truly help...please, do it...for yourself and the little kids who will be looking to you, no doubt, in your class...if not a councillor, turn to friends, family, share your grief..  my condolences...  :(

And sues777..sorry to hear about your pal..it INFURIATES me when these things happen, and they happen way too often....usually by someone with a belly full of alcohol, big and brave...yeah well, take the booze away, and they are usually the cowards...pathetic..... :smth076

One of our Aussie "mates" is going thru a pretty tough time at the moment...losing someone close to her...she's always the first one to offer "angels", advice, words of comfort and love to anyone, just anyone, who is suffering in any way... so, Lara, (scatcat) if kind thoughts and friendship could help ease your pain, going by the friends you have made here sweet one, you would not be feeling quite so sad... melly...

OMG!  That's just aweful news, lacrima mosa!!  I am so sorry to hear that one of your students died so tragically.  May time help heal the pain for you and your students and families.  I agree that counseling or talking to people may help.  There are also several grief forums on the net if it helps to talk to people going thru the same thing or at least reading of their experiences.

Take care!

I'm very sorry you and your loved one are going through this... I can relate a little because I have known two people who have had this disease, but after much worry and heartache they both got better and have now gone back happily to their lives... So try to think positive, it will help her too!

When someone's having their sweet sixteen and inviting people to their party...

DO NOT pass out invitations around the kids you are not inviting!

It's rude and hurtful to [me] the person not being invited!
Plus, what have I even ever done to these people? Nothing. I'm just simply not cool enough. The people who were invited were huge pricks, and rightfully did not deserve the invitations.

I don't mean to be a downer, but I would never do something like that. And if I wasn't inviting someone, I would try to keep the party outside of school and send invitations through mail or email.

That kind of singling out should not be allowed in schools, especially not the kind I go to (special school for teens with depression and whatnot)...

Nahhh CV...you've got it wrong...you're way too cool for these kids...they don't want you at the party because they'll all feel like twats if you are there...it's a gathering of the feeble, so don't worry...shake it off...

Now, don't you go 'phoning the police the night this party is on, pretending you are a neighbour and complain about the excessive noise and drug abuse will you??
shame on you for even thinking of this..  :smth047

You know, at my ripe old age  ;) I have noticed something....A lot of the kids that were accepted by everyone and "popular" in my high school because they didn't "stick out", often went on to lead nondescript, uneventful lives (because they kept on trying to blend in even as they got older, minding what's "socially acceptable" and what isn't)... And a lot of the ones who were shunned and thought of as "weird" because they had their own mind and their own personality are the ones who now seem (at least from the outside, I can't give guarantees or anything) to have realized their potential, chosen their own path without fear, and gone on to live fulfilling, satisfying lives.... Just a thought. :)

Thanks guys. Here's the kicker though... :)

Today, she handed me an invitation. Now, she's not a popular kid per say, she's very sweet in fact. That's what shocked me when she didn't invite me. And now I feel like I kind of forced it on her and she sent me the invite out of guilt.

I don't know if I should accept it or not, but she is a really nice person. If she didn't want me there, I understand, and I wouldn't want to ruin her sixteenth with my mopiness and neurotic behavior anyway.

I just hope things won't be akwkward if I do end up going...

BREAKING NEWS IN MY LIFE:
My dad just called and told me he doesn't think my grandmother has much time left on this earth...she's in really bad condition, very frail and can hardly hold things in her hands. She's the only one I have left.  :(

Lots of things make me feel sad lately, but right at the moment very sad that my Dad has decided to give back a cute, little puppy that he recently adopted right after the passing of my mother.  My Dad was so lonely and sad and probably a bit irrational, he thought a puppy would help fill the void.  Now Dad is just too depressed, irratable, and has absolutely no patience and has decided to give him back to the adoption agency so he can find a "happy" home.  I'm heartbroken but I guess it's probably best for Arnie (the pup) in the long run!!  He was such a little cutie!  Crap, now I'm crying for the little bugger.  I think it's going to be one of those days, starting to feel like a xanax moment for me!  I'm so weak!

edit ~ I removed the large pic of the puppy as it might slow down the page.

With all the news about current deaths such as the late and tragic Heath, I feel silly bringing this up, but what the heck...

I have been watching and reading alot of media obtaining to Ian Curtis of Joy Division, and I almost cried for the first time in a year or so...it's very sad, and watching him on stage, you can begin to get hints of hid sadness...it's in his face, in his voice, his lyrics...such a sad man, but brilliant and an artistic genius. God bless him for one of the best bands ever.

I need to see "CONTROL"...it looks bloody magnificent.  8)

Its so sad when things like this happen, but they happen more frequently now. Today the news was just death after death.
And also, about an hour from where i live, a 14 year old girl was stabbed 30 times on her way home at 5pm and is critically ill  :smth011

I agree about Ian Curtis, a genius... and he should be remembered!

FRIENDS, I NEED YOUR CONDOLENCES, PLEASE

My friends dont like me. Which is strange because I think only of them. They're lucky to have someone like me who is so committed and so trustworthy.

And all I get is sh*t on by them. Two of my friends totally avoiding me for one reason or another, and I dont even say so much as a "Hello" to them before they just walk away. What the hell did I do to deserve this? My only goal in life right now is to find a steady friendship, someone to share my dreams, thoughts, sadness, and laughter with.

But I guess that's too much to ask for when you're 14-16. All your friends want is girls and sex. They forget what the real friendship is, who their real friends are. And they ditch me for some girl they've never even known before simply because she's attractive. Superficial bastards looking for superficial love. I understand what T.S.O.L. was speaking of finally...

I feel heartbroken, and its strange because it has nothing to do with romance. I don't have a girlfriend and never have. I only have my friend friends, and that was always good enough for me. Someone to share these moments with in life. But it seems that a quick fling is worth more to them than actual kindness and respect, actual dedication to another human being. I have offered them nothing but positive support, happiness...and it's plain hateful to avoid me like this and make up excuses not to see me.

On AOL Instant Messaging today, my friend was not responding to anything I wrote. He'd occasionally spit out a "Yeah sure" or a "Hi", but he was obviously engaged in something else. I was just asking what his plans were and if we can hang out, and this kid just totally goes 180 and puts up a wall between us as if I did something completely out of line. Is it so wrong to want to spend time with a buddy? I haven't had "guy time" in a long time! I've spent weekends on end alone in my room in silence!

Maybe I should find a material girl just to please that voice inside me that says, "Everyone's doing it, everyone your age is dating...why aren't you?" because he was a much nicer, more enjoyable person to be around before he had this stupid "DATING" objective clogging up his mind. I curse the day he began IM'ing her online...

I swear if I have to hear about her again, and how he blew me off during the weekend to go feel her up behind the bleachers, I will just die inside. I've known this dude for like three years, and he's only known this chick since November of last year. Add it up.

"Bros before hos" is what I say. And if you can't find a balance between the two, then you might as well kiss all of your true friends away, and enjoy that FDA-Approved peace of ass you use to better your self-image.

I feel so lonely right now...like I mean nothing to nobody.

Sorry if I upset anyone with my harsh words. But I have been crushed, and I hope you guys will understand my anger and sorrow.

We just had one of the final meetings at my office. It will be quite hard to quit the place you have been working in for more than 7 years

that must have been a strange day... and some huge changes in life that you're about to go through there.
moving to anywhere that far away from your old life and everyone in it - of course i've never faced anything that radical in my life, so maybe i can't try and relate fully, as i've never experienced anything in that magnitude... but whenever it has happened on a smaller sace, i've tried to find consolation in the words "you are not in the place but the place is in you".
or maybe i just sound all cheesy here - anyway, it does take courage to do what you're doing, to go so far away.
(i wish i wasn't such a coward myself...!)

It's always sad to say "goodbye" to people we have become close to, especially those we work with, as we spend most of our days with them! But, as you turn and leave, probably with a tear in your eye, just think of the journey in front of you, the new friends you will make, the "adventure" of making a whole new life for yourself.. and I am sure those who you have become closest to at work will keep in touch, and probably be a little jealous that you have taken that deep breath and made such a big change in your life... it's always hard to say goodbye... :smth064

And CV... they'll probably break up and you'll be friends again...it's hormones, you know, testosterone... I know what you mean, you should still be friends even if he's dating this chick...but, sometimes, it just doesn't work that way, sadly... don't take it all personally, your pal is thinking with something else other than his brain    I KNOW it's hard being a teenager, but, you know what, some things that seem insurmountable at the time, can turn out to be just a whisper in your memory as time passes.... don't be angry, or sad.... just maybe back off a bit with this guy, let him have some space with this girl, see what happens... fill your time with things YOU like to do, and don't concentrate on this feeling of abandonment you have at the moment....you're only making YOURSELF miserable, he is totally oblivious to how you are feeling, his mind is elsewhere.....get on with your life, and try...just try...to smile...a little... it will all be ok...I promise... :smth023

just a few lines... CV  .. it is time to think of yourself!! Friends come and go. You are going through a lot of teenage turmoil. Us "oldies" have been there too, and also witness to our children's adolescence.
Concentrate on where you are and where you want to be.. it is hard.. but girls and stuff will come along when it is right.
Take strength in yourself, and start a new day, everyday, do not let others affect you. It disempowers you. You are stronger than you believe right now. !!  :smth023

a neighbour "opened up" a bit to me, and told me this; their eldest son ( 4 kids) is gay, and when his grandfather found out, he disowned this child. The old " he's no grandson of MINE" was said; soul destroying for the boy, his parents and siblings. Fast forward to present day, the gay son lives overseas, the grandfather is now old and sick... his wife and friends have died, and he now seeking atonement for his actions many years ago. Hmmm... my neighbour ( the young mans' Mum) has disregarded the grandfather ( her father in law) for many, many years, and is finding it so hard to forgive this man for what he did and said about their first born. How sad...the situation.... I can imagine how Mum is feeling, let's face it, we love and protect our kids no matter what their path in life. We love them unconditionally really.... I honestly don't know how I would react to this... the grandfather seeking family acceptance... is it out of love and realising he was so, so wrong....or is it because he is old and lonely??  Could I ever forgive such an outburst and rejection of my child by a grandparent?  I say no...but that's easy when it's not me.... sad, very sad...

That's just awful, Melly. I'm really sorry about that...

I never understood how a person's sexuality can ruin a family like that. Why can't people just accept each other's sexual preferences and let them live in peace? Nobody should have to be treated like that because of how they were made...there is nothing wrong with being gay and he should get just as much love from grandpa as any other child.

It's no wonder so many children and teenagers are repressing their homosexuality instead of embracing it, with so many judgemental and prejudice people out there, it's got to be hard for them to come to grips with who they are and realize that there is NOTHING wrong with them.

I hope everything turns out okay for him, Melly. He seems to be having a pretty hard life as of now. And the poor mom. I send my love!  :)

I'm sorry for double posting.

I just wanted to announce a tragedy that has happened at my school.

This week, I found out that a student who had been missing from our school for a while had actually been out because he was diagnosed with cancer. We are all very sad and worried about him. The teachers said he'd be coming back soon, but warned us not to make mention of it or overwhelm him with attention, so as to not alienate him or make him feel awkward. Problem here is we're dealing with a group of mixed nuts (teenagers) with various mental/emotional problems...so you never know what to expect. For example:

I was even more saddened when a classmate of mine said aloud, "If he comes back bald, I'll probably laugh my ass off!" I was truely sickened and appauled by such a crass remark, and the fact that this boy would crack jokes about such a serious matter! Some were thinking of calling him "BALDY"!!!  :x  :smth011

In fact, I shot back at this *a-hole* and told him if he said anything to this boy or even bothered him, I would knock his damn block off! (a threat I will never carry out...I don't believe in violence as conflict resolution). He wasn't the only one cracking jokes about it...I don't think anyone grasped the seriousness of the situation.

This was a boy I had known and had started to become casual friends with at school, and I'm sure he had many friends there already as well, so it was strikingly awful to hear this news on Wednesday. The week went downhill from there...and I don't blame anyone.

Aside from that, one of our staff member's husbands died recently, and they have been away quite a while at his funeral and such...it's very tramatic, all the bad things happening at our school recently. I didn't know this man, but it's still very unfortunate.

Many changes are being made to the curriculum to better fit our ever-changing student body and staff. Things seem to be falling apart...both in my life and the lives of my friends and teachers. People were generally grief-striken all week (for many different, un-related reasons)...there's just alot of bad karma and vibes floating around that place.

I hope everything turns out alright. Hopefully the cancer is not benign (and I was informed it woudln't be) but it's still very scary and nerve-wrecking for all of us.

I'm praying for the best for everyone! :)

sorry to hear that CV.
sounds like a bad time.
benign cancer is better than malignant, so i hope your pal has good support.
ignoring or not mentioning it can be worse sometimes, as this person may be in an already isolated place. If he is a friend, maybe in time you can talk to him about it and it might help him feel better.

I'm sad today because someone I know is very unwell also.

Thanks, homies!  :-D

Today was nice at the least. My friend came back, head covered. I watched with a keen eye for that one boy who said that he'd "laugh if he saw [blank] bald".

Luckily, he kept his mouth shut and the kid seemed to have a good day from what I could tell. Nobody bombarded him with attention or questions. It was as if he was perfectly fine! He is so brave and strong, it takes alot of courage to go back to school after something like that. I'm very happy for him.

We had to tell this kid, "Don't go up to him and say, 'I'm very sorry, how bad is it?', because whereas it may show him that you care, it might make him feel uncomfortable too." All this kid needs is to feel welcomed, normal, and accepted. Being treated like you're sick is never a good feeling, and I should know from experiences I've had in the past.

We ( in South Australia) are in yet another heatwave. Day upon day of 100 plus, no relief in sight...no rain, I can't even remember the last time the sky opened up....it's terrible, our State is suffering....on the East coast of Australia, it's raining, pouring, they are having floods, destruction and sadness for people losing their belongings....South Australia has always been known as the dryest State in the dryest Continent on earth...but this long, scorching spell is bringing us to our knees...strict water restrictions have been in place for some time....our rainwater tank is all but empty....the river Murray, the prime source of water for most, is nearly dead, simpering and trickling, not the raging torrent it should, and used to be.... please...rain.....please....

well, firstly, you need to find out if you actually DID upset someone....
if you did, it was unintentional, so, you weren't being mean...
small misunderstandings can sometimes get blown out of all proportion...
it's easy to take things the wrong way on the internet, can't give each other a "nudge nudge, wink wink"...

Aww...I'm really sorry, Hero. I can relate to all of that. The people that passed, were they close to you? It's very hard to lose someone you love, I do know that from experience. My dad is divorced and lives in a different state far away, and it feels like he's dead. I hardly ever get to see him or hear from him, and it's really hard.

And as for the friend thing, I know what you must be going through...I have this friend who I really care about, but ever since he got a girlfriend he seems to have drifted away, putting up a wall. And he was my closest pal, to top it. Cross our fingers that everything in the friendship world will heal itself. We can beat this!  ;)

Look forward to the summer, for some reason the warmth works as a natural anti-depressant. I hope you feel better!  :)

I'm so sorry the Chairman is unwell  :smth085, but don't lose hope...I know you remember I was in a very similar situation a couple of months ago, and the vets always seem to tell you the worst of it. From what they said in the beginning I was expecting to see my gatto waste away in a matter of a few weeks, and right now he's sitting in my lap purring and looking better than ever, his last check-up two weeks ago revealed no problems, and I think he's going to be with us for quite a while longer.(Fingers crossed!) So even though it's difficult, try to think positive... :smth056

hmm 'sooky' means in either English or Aussie slang.. ( believe it or not,, it is not in the old Oxford dictionary i have,.. ) but it refers to being 'a sook'.. ( sulk, not necessarily a winger, but, possibly a bit of a crybaby.. ) which .. as we all know, when you're not well, who isn't?

hey scatcat - I'm really, really sorry to hear Chairman Mao is unwell.
As a "cat mother" myself, I know how upsetting it is when your little furry ones are sick.  Just keep telling him you love him....Sending you and your little one lots of hugs.....

Hugs to you scatcat and your feline friend..it's awful when they are ill, just do what you are doing...letting him know how much he is loved... and yes, vets do tell us the worst, try to make us realise we may just lose our fuzzy pals.. I guess it's better to tell the truth, what they believe MAY happen... working with sick animals is a science all on its own...I mean, our pets can't say "OOoO, I have a headache"...or whatever...
warm wishes to you and your kitty... :smth056

I'm sorry about your kitty too, Scatcat. It's dreadful when they're sick.  :(
My Dilly cat is 3 years old now, and has had both IBD and Stomatitis since he was 4 months old, which has been very difficult to cope with some days.
He had all his teeth extracted when he was only 8 months old, and I have to keep him on a special diet.
He can be rather a handful to look after, but I woudn't part with him for the world! He's so loving.
Today it made me sad as poor Dilly had a dreadful upset stomach, and I had to bath him twice. He is very patient, and puts up with a lot, but I could see he wasn't feeling great today.
Plus it was *my* fault, as he'd managed to scarf down some of my other cat's dry food, which I should have cleared away before he could get at it. My bad.  :?

@Cure Freak
Sorry to hear about your problem.
I also have a friend who had tb a couple of years back.... recovery is a long process, very slow, but now he is completely healthy.
So, you need a lot of patience and you need to take good care of yourself, but you'll get through it and a moment will come when it all seems like a bad dream that's gone!
Best of luck to you  :)

sorry to hear silversand..  72 years old is still a great age to live,  :smth059

My dad died before he was 40 years old.. with 4 kids!..
i hope to pass on the fact that you had many years longer than what I had... and much more memories .. my heart is there , out for you, D

hey, all i wish for is to go peacefully too.. how beautiful , and painless.
There are always regrets- our lives are too busy.. but OMG.. my neices and nephews are having children of their own now.. I am a Great Aunt.. ( The Greatest- Aunt I say!!)..

do not despair that you have not seen her for awhile.. the soul is not there... it has taken flight now..and no doubt watching out for you!
all that remains is the earthly body. Your Aunt is not there honey, but in your heart.
..and the memories that you hold ..

with love   :smth049 .. to u.. silversand..  :smth051

on a personal note here.. what has made me a little sad today ( besides siversand's personal loss )
.. is that over the last 12 months i have 'given' quite a substantial amount of money to help out my best friend.
It adds up to quite a few thousand dollars.
I have given this money in 'good faith' , to help out, but the requests of financial assistance keep coming in. as recently as yesterday.
It is someone I have known for almost 20 years.. my only 'best' friend.

I have to support my son on my own. My friend knows I am generous..  :!:
THIS IS A FAULT, i KNOW. i ALSO KNOW i WILL NEVER BE REPAID.

I am torn apart, because I cannot any longer lend/give out money .. I need it to survive myself.. the money I have  shared, I could've put a down payment on a house.. I could've  flown to Europe to see Our Band, or USA for that matter, or kept for my son for college. I know I will never see this money again.
(please.. NO requests for money here.. okay!!)

I really don't know what to do.. i have been feeling pretty bad about not answering an sms.. yes.. an sms for financial help, sounds lame..   :?

Do I call the mother ( i have known for 20 years also) to advise & let her know how bad the situation is .. at the risk of betraying my bestest friend.. ..
or.. is this friend if mine.. a leech, only needing me when she needs financial assistance.?
Any advice or input would save me ...  :smth100

I have good memories to her when i visited my grandmother with my parents or we visited her in Vienna (where she lived).
She was a great person, who never kept her chin up.
She will be always in my heart.

No, i'm not despair that i haven't seen her for a very long time, but i regret it very much. It reminds me a little bit of the song "cut here".

I'm soooo sorry what happend to you. To turn around very cent to survive and not get the money back you've lend your friend is very hard. You need all the money for you and your son. Hope you aren't in financial trouble because of that. That would be sad.

Maybe it's better not to lend money to a friend, even if it's the best friend.
If i have understand it right.

Thanks for the advice scatcat :)

thanks D : My son says "it's enough mum".. ( he is too generous himself..) but he knows i would do anything to help a friend.
I am crying now, at the fact I have to turn my back on a friend-in-need. I have done all I can. All I have is a one-sided friendship ( been there before...) where I put this friend before myself and my own financial/emotional needs.. and ended up with nothing.
The question is: is there a financial price for friendship, or am really been taken advantage of? This friend I would give my right-arm for.. but it seems I don't exist or participate in her life other than handing out dosh.!?

It is not the first time I have MIS-CALCULATED the scales in a balanced friendship.. and been devastated at the loss of my time and effort. This time it is financial.

OKAY:  I should just put up a sign that says: " I am an idiot, take advantage of me as you will, because I have no-one to trust"  :smth011

Scatcat - You've helped your friend as much as you can that doesn't mean you have turned your back on them. If they are a true friend they will realise that you need your money for you and your son. I think its a very difficult situation, i know someone with the same problem giving a friend thousands of pounds and having to say no more but i think they are still friends?
Sometimes you have to put yourself first.

Silversand - I'm so sorry for you loss. I hope your aunt is at peace, i know MS can be awful my mum has it. If you regret not seeing her, try talking to her in your head, it sounds crazy but i did when something similar happened to me and it really helped. Also i read a book which said after people die their spirit returns to their family so they can listen to what they say. It just an idea...
My thoughts are with you  :smth051

i'm teaching a three-week summer class at the university, starting this monday. today one of the students didn't show up on the class in the morning. i thought he was simply a little bit late. then one of the other students also arrived late and told us this missing student had just been run over by a tram, right outside the university. she said she saw the accident while on her way to the class.
now i read the news in the web and they say this young man got severe head injuries (including a fractured skull) and is in critical condition in the hospital.

this really made me feel a bit shocked today. i only met this man once, on our first session on monday, so i didn't get to know him at all. but last i saw him he was this lively and smiling person, moving about and talking to us and being interested to learn new things in our summer class.
it's just shocking how things can just change just like that. :(

That's awful, japanesebaby. Such a terrible thing to happen! I do hope this poor young man recovers.
I had some sad news last week, too.
I dear old friend of mine, from the village I used to live in England, was killed on the railway line as she tried to cross to the other platform.
She was very elderly, and rather deaf, so she probably didn't hear the train approaching the station, and wasn't quick enough to cross the line. Poor lady.
It was all rather a shock to hear, as I knew her so well, and she was always so kind to me and my daughter when we lived there.  :smth087
Hopefully now the local council will do something to improve the conditions at the railway station. It's very dangerous.

I found that my mom is losing her job at the hospital here in town on September 1st, and that she is required to train in her replacement or she won't receive her 2 year settlement from workmen's comp.

I had my girly appointment two weeks ago, and I was told that my test came back abnormal and that they need to test me for the HPV virus and cancer.  I lead a pretty straight laced life, so it came as a big shock to me...and I only just turned 24 a week ago.

My son may also have to have a 4th surgery at the end of October, but I won't know for sure until that day; and that is only about 2 1/2-3 weeks before his 4th birthday.

Hope the test will be negativ. You're son is still very young and passed through many things. Hope that the 4th surgery isn't necessary at the end of October. Keep my fingers crossed :)

I'm sorry that your mother will lose her job on September 1st. Hope she will find a new one very soon.

Ya know, I am beginning to really hate this damn month...today...I found out that my boyfriend tried to make it home after a party he had went to; he got pulled over, arrested for a DWI (driving while intoxicated) and now he is sitting in jail.  When crap starts to really go down hill like this, sometimes it's hard not to feel a little bit of self pity.  That only makes me get angrier though.  Jumpin' Jeepers I just don't get it.  It makes me wonder if I murdered babies in a past life or something...

i'm a bit disppointed today because i think i missed an opportunity to have a new job starting from september and it means i need to stick to my old one - still better than no job at all but it disappoints me because i would have gotten a chance to spend more time with family/relatives, had i gotten that other job. and sometimes you just feel change would have been good for you at some point of your life and you feel like you're totally stuck when you miss opportunities like that. i feel a bit stuck today - unstuck would have been better...

well, I feel sad during all this week. cuz w/ me happened the same thing as in the Cut Here (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Cut-Here-lyrics-The-Cure/D48DE73727B7A31C48256D790014897C) song... absolutely the same story, same 3 years, practically same feelings etc. anyway, I wish if only...

sorry to hear that.
the older i get the more i get teminally afraid that too many things will be left unsaid - i wonder why does it seem to be so hard to find the right moments to say those things?
you feel like "this is not the right time..." and next time you might be too late...

(ps. the 'cut here' thread -> http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,5111.0.html)

Yes, thanks. I read this post about Cut Here 3 days ago.
Well, my mistake tht I start readind cure lyrics too late. Just 3 months ago (in spite of tht I am cure-fan 4 years).
I didn't realize how it is and this song (cut here) I listened last time 2 years ago. That time I like just cure music & didn't read lyrics & don't payed attention on the sense & words. Unfortunately.  And then Im listening it now.
Now Im reading every song, cuz all I remember is just the music.
I discovering now too many situations in my life concerned with Cure songs.
Sometimes I even think tht more of his songs writen for me & my ex girlfriend.
I think every fan think so & I respect it, when u see reflected in their songs.
And maybe now make me happy just the fact tht I find my music & my reflection there. Thank u!  :smth023

Also 'good' thing happened 1 week ago.
I went for the water to the shop & streets was empty. Then I see 10-11 guys (18-25 yo) running & ask me for the 'water', then an guy run up to me & punish me by head. Then they ask me for the money & start beat unmercifully. I gave them all I have in the pockets, then an guy take it & throw out to the bush tht was near me, then again start punish. Then they ask me if I go to the police & then punish me to my back & run away. Thts it. Just like tht. They even don't needed the money. Such a amusement...

I'm sorry that you didn't got the new job japanesebaby. I can understand when you have the change to get a new one and then you don't. That's frustrating and you have the feeling your "stuck".
I'm sure when the next opportunity arise, you will have a new job japanesebaby  :)

@ wish-man:

I can understand you wish-man. To miss the opportunity to talk to someone you like because the person gone forever, that isn't a good feeling. I was sad that i couldn't talk to my aunt, it hasn't unfortutnately resulted.

The lyrics are wonderful and i think you can find let me say something familiar in some words.
Have fun by reading these great lyrics!!!

Sorry, wish-man i can't understand to punish let me say a stranger in the face for amusement.
And i will never understand it.

usernames that look very similar are common in these fan forums - many people want to pick names from same songs.

Yes, I know, nothing to feel sad  It's just if I was making a profile on this forum I had several times the message this profile excist allready. So I search for another name, the title of a song but also meaning of the word. In my meaning you have not the solution with an extra point or a capital or ... Otherwise we look all the same??? Not very original ha.

How easliy someone who "loves" you just tosses you aside.  How a friend who once said that you're "irreplaceable" has done just that!  And I was told "you'd like her! she's alot like you!" Don't try to replace me!  How dare he!?!  Someone who may not have been by boyfriend/lover right now, but my best friend; someone I truly felt was my soulmate has just tossed me aside...like yesterday's garbage.  14 years...on a friendship, on a love that I thought was untainted...what a load of utter, disgusting, disappointing shit!

In my 29 years of life, today was the first time I saw a dead person:

http://www.keloland.com/News/NewsDetail6371.cfm?Id=87750

I wasn't sure of it at the time, but the situation looked quite grave. Upon taking this exit I saw a tipped motorcycle and a guy lying face first on the ground, completely motionless, with one of his shoes fallen off.

Considering the swarm of emergency vehicles and the fact that nobody was rushing to give him aid, I had a feeling it was already over.  :(

Anyway, I just found out for sure when I got back home a few hours ago. I must have just missed the accident by a few minutes!

I did have my camera with me and could have easily taken a photo, but something didn't feel right about it. It was just too bizarre, seeing something like that so up close and personal.

I can easilly understand what You´ve been through. Me and a friend once saw an old lady on a scooter beeing rampooned by a bus. We didn´t react normally on the situation (if there is a normal way to react upon) and hardly know how to move our car or in what direction we were supposed to move it. The thing was that we saw the lady to our right and the bus which was coming from our right aswell and the old lady just looked to her left and then drove off right in front of the bus. I remember that I was thinking, "Well she´s gonna make it" cause I thought that the bus moved really, really slow, like in slow-motion but the impact was terrible. The force from it lifted the old lady some 20 metres and cruched her to the asphalt and the scene was just surreal. We couldn´t believe what we´d just witnessed. The old lady had had a basket full of fruits on her scooter and as I remeber it the apples, pears and oranges sort of gathered round her head like drawn there by an invisible magnet. It was blood all around her skull and everything around was so quiet. It was really spooky and I don´t think that I would´ve taken any picture either, have I had a kamera at that moment.

some experiences there, it makes you stop for a while.
years ago i was driving in a car and came to a site near a lake shore where a guy was lying in the middle of the road with some paramedics trying to give him first aid. the guy had been in an open boat out in a lake and had been struck by a lighting. amazingly, the other people in the boat weren't hurt at all and nor was the (wooden) boat. but  the guy who was hit was already dead when the paramedics finally arrived. that happened before the era of mobile phones so it took a while to get to the shore and then run to the nearest house to call for help.

and it's really not a time you really think about taking photos (sometimes i wonder how some journalists who travel to some war/natural hazard areas can keep on taking photos in the middle of really shocking situations. i guess it takes a special state of mind, to stay focused on the professional side and just keep shooting no mater what happened). however, i have a "photo" of the guy lying on the road is somehow carved into my memory very detailedly nevertheless.

I was down at the local sewage treatment work today to take pictures of different birds in the pounds there. And all of a sudden there was a house martin that dived into what it believed was water but what was indeed dark silt. It try to get itself out of there for several minutes but died after two or three metres. I tried to save it but didn´t found enough of boards to throw out there to get to it in time. I actually felt a bit sorry for it.

Today I'm more disappointed than sad, I just visited Roger O'Donnell's site and it says that he is in fact not coming to Toronto  in November to preform "Quieter Trees" like he said he would. I had been looking forward to this preformance for a long time. I feel kind of let down because he will be preforming it somewhere else instead. I'm glad I was able to see him in February, but after being told that he was coming back and then being rejected is very disapointing.  :smth090

Update Oct 31st- He is coming back this Thursday to preform the show, very happy now:)

I informed them yesterday about my clinic stay.

Clinic stay? Doesn't sound too good, hope you're alright now.

Left my job after 8 years. It was a great job: very flexible (I could take vacations anytime I wanted), great people, great team... but I got a very(!) interesting job offer in another company and though that it was the right time to move. I will greatly miss my team, and though I am sad today I am hoping that the new job was indeed the right choice! Send me your good vibes now!

A friend passed away. Was battling cancer. She had my age. A woman full of energy, a very smart software engineer, who loved to dance and who listened to very good music. She was in treatment in Argentina (for her disease we didn't have the right hospital in Peru) and just got the news some hours ago.

She is the second from the left:

One mail she sent me when I was arranging moving to Europe back in 2008...

QuoteHi David, I was traveling last week and then I got sick so I just saw the email where they tell us that you leave the PUCP and go away? :) Well, nothing, just wish you do well and that everything you are planning comes out as you expect. Your music news is going to be missed in these parts so I hope you keep in touch J. Sorry I don't go to your farewell today, apart from the fact that I just saw the mail I'm still not so good and I can't have dinner on the street...

Rather, until what day do you come to the PUCP? Somewhere I have the Airiel stuff and some things that I told you to spend and for a change I did not have time to put them together, they may not be of very good quality but if you do not have them out there they serve as a souvenir for when you get the nostalgia for Lima;) hehe ... let me know.

Regards,

Zkenia

RIP :(

Dear @dsanchez, I am so sorry this happened.  :1f62a:  There's never the right words for this.

This song is especially helpful for me when awful things happen.

The last person we lost was 80 - one of our two wedding witnesses and just the sweetest man.  When a person is old it's more expected, but still really hard.  Rob and Alice used to farm, and had retired to town when we became friends with them many years ago, due to a heart virus that randomly destroyed significant amounts of Rob's heart muscle in his 50s. But it didn't destroy his real heart... and the way he lived gave all of us lessons on how to live.  He never looked at what he could no longer do, only at what new things he could learn to do, and spent many hours in his workshop below his house making candelabras and metal sculptures of cute animals, and all sorts of decorative objects - and even a wrought-iron gate.  I always enjoyed popping in and spending time in the workshop to see his latest project, and Rob was so cheerful and had so many great stories that I always felt lifted after spending time with him.

When we bought our small farm in 2010, he gave us an adze which he'd used for decades to split timber into fenceposts when he was farming, and we used it to plant over 4,000 trees and bushes (and counting) at our place.  When we started, Rob was still around, and he came to see the first 2,000 trees when they were as tall as us.  I still remember him walking amongst the young trees and the smile on his face.  "They'll grow quickly, you just wait!" he said, and he was right.

The other thing he gave us was an old breadmaker of his, when his grandkids got him a new fancy model - just before we were married.  He said, "Now there's two of you, don't you want to bake your own bread? This is a great breadmaker, totally trouble-free, but I have to use the new one now because of my grandkids."

When Rob died, it was hard on all of us, but especially Alice.

But every time I bake a loaf of bread, I automatically remember him, and there is this continuity between him making bread, and me making bread.  And when we look at all the shelter belts around us growing tall, we think of Rob, and whenever we use the adze for digging or for planting, there is this continuity between the many years he spent farming, and our own efforts at farming, and it kind of feels like a blessing.

Rob made us a better person because of who he was, and we are conscious of that as we live our lives, and as we now walk through the world for him, as well as for us, and see things also with his perspective, when we look at the world.

You can't bring her back, David, and that's really tough.  :1f62a:  But you can remember your friend, and walk through the world for her, and dance for her, and laugh for her, and cry for her, and live a little bit more than you did before, and look through her eyes a little, in honour of her... so that her life is still a part of yours, and so that she still matters. ♥

Take good care of yourself.  ♥

This year (counting since Easter 2019) I've lost THREE colleagues at work.

One because of a heart attack, another one because of (we suspect) an ictus in the bathroom, the third one (two days ago), because of lung cancer.
The second one hurt me quite a bit (not that the others didn't, but we were not as close and had not been together for so long).

Wherever you other forum inmates are, don't die.

Today I'm feeling sad, or more likely bittersweet (but in a quite gloomy way), because I feel I'm treated like a small child by many people.
And I also feel quite guilty because of many mistakes I've made.

But at the same time, I feel quite serene. Come what may.

I'm sad because a much-loved Aussie icon died last month, way too young, after a long battle with blood cancer.  Tom Long was legendary in our country for creating the wonderful character Angus in the late 1990s comedy/drama Seachange - a real centrepiece of the show.  It was so funny how he used to put that little quaver in his voice whenever he got emotional.

Here he is as clerk of the court, and for some reason it won't work embedded, so I've linked it.

I'm feeling quite sad as the realisation struck me that it will likely be a long time before The Cure take to the stage again 😯

Given they had such a big 2019 I was anticipating they'd have a rest from touring in 2020 ...but perhaps closer to the end of the year we would get an understanding of what they may have planned for 2021.

But now I wonder ...?

The one festival appearance planned for 2020 might still be cancelled, but: they said it was not the start of something new, more like a full stop to the 2019 festival tour.

Thus, I would expect a new world tour to start after the album release (which hopefully will happen in 2020). Let's just wait and see...

I'm sorry that's happening with someone your cared about a bit, @Ulrich.  In our neighbourhood, we're surrounded by conspiracy theorists, even before COVID-19.  The Port Arthur Massacre (Australia's biggest mass shooting) didn't happen, it was staged so that the government could tighten gun controls (and thank goodness they did, we say - and still not tight enough, e.g. there's still domestic violence cases where people get threatened with guns in their own homes and some even shot, and shot dead...).  SARS-CoV-2 was deliberately cooked up by the Chinese in a lab (ask virologists and they say the chance of that is around 5% and the chance of it being a natural mutation around 95%, but who listens to virologists when completely unqualified people who couldn't tell a virus from a prion can opine away and gain traction?).  Yadda yadda yadda.

Well the worst part is: by posting things along the lines of "it's a conspiracy in order to get rid of 'unconventional' leaders like Trump, Bolsonaro etc.", he puts himself in a right-wing corner and after the crisis he will have difficulty promoting concerts (seeing most punk fans are rather "leftist"), i.e. he's ruining his future.  :1f629:  :disappointed:

The state of the mirabelles on the tree in the garden... due to a lot of rain, the fruits are all split open, so not much can be done with 'em, except eat a few right now, before they'll be rotting...

...can you take all the ones that aren't rotting, and stew them up?  You can freeze this stuff then.  :)

...this is with our Japanese blood plums, but the principle is the same.  8L pot will do nearly a bucket at a time... stoning the fruit is the most time-consuming thing.  I did around 15 buckets of plums alone last summer and now we're in transports over the taste of this stuff in winter, on pancakes and waffles, in yoghurt, on toast, on semolina, you name it...

PS: Mirabelles may benefit from a dash of rum!  ;)

Excellent!  :)

...the ones that aren't usable, you can feed to some local cows - if they're just starting to ferment, but not if they're mouldy - because cows get tipsy on fermented fruit!   Just don't overdo... there was a genuine case of severe alcohol intoxication in dogs reported in the Australian Veterinary Journal a while back, where a couple of Rottweilers were unconscious and had to go on drips because they'd been fed uncooked pizza dough (owner had a pizzeria).

So, "sad today" just became less sad.  But, I've something genuinely sad.  Carla Suarez Navarro, a really nice tennis player on the international circuit, got diagnosed with Hodgkin's and has six months of chemotherapy coming up. :worried:  I'm hoping she's going to make it, she's only 31... the odds are reasonable actually, but even so, chemotherapy is a horrible business...

Title: Re: What made you feel sad today?
Post by: SueC on November 02, 2020, 01:07:51
Sorry to hear that, @MeltingMan. :'(  Over here, in our regional centre, we used to have a lovely beachfront hotel made of sandstone that had been built by some rich philanthropist in old-style.

About 15 years ago, the perfectly functional, beautiful, site sensitive building was demolished by its new owners who were greedy to make money by building a big monstrosity on the site instead.

(https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.albanygateway.com.au%2Fmedia%2Fnews%2Fgreat_southern_news%2Fimages%2Fmonthly%2F2014%2F02%2F1_aaesplanade_19f92nj-19f92nn.jpg&f=1&nofb=1)

And this is the kind of horrible faceless soulless fish tank they wanted to put there instead - into our historic little town full of colonial architecture:

(https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.thewest.com.au%2Fpublication%2FYA-106126%2F57302c8f087e8_b88141714z.1_20160509141451_000_glai0q72.2_1-1bj0b4e.jpg%3Fimwidth%3D1024&f=1&nofb=1)

(Plus, can you see how close to the current sea level that is - and sea levels are both currently rising, and projected to rise more as the icesheet melting accelerates.  We shouldn't even be putting new buildings into locations like this.  But, developers are still planning on it, and have also asked the town council for a sea wall to "protect their investment" - the developers should be paying for their own sea wall, instead of getting the town council to rob us ratepayers for it.  What happens to the neoliberal mantra of "user pays" (applied to education, health, other public services - which we're already paying for with our taxes anyway) when they're going to be out of pocket themselves?  That's right, that idea doesn't apply to them - it really means, "The little people pay for their own stuff and get the most meager public services we can get away with, and the little people subsidise our stuff, and then we reap the profits and spit on the community.")

Then the Global Financial Crisis happened, and the owners had to put everything on hold.  So now, instead of having a lovely sandstone building in which we could go for coffee and a meal, and which was a mainstay venue for local bands, the locals have had this for 15 years:

Admittedly, it's still better than the monstrosities that developers want to put there instead.  I don't know how many protests and petitions we've had, but nobody ever listens to the locals these days, big money always imposes their shiitake on us, with the blessing of our local council of thugs, who do anything but represent the will of the local community.  Nice democracy, even at this level.  NOT.   :smth011

Meanwhile, locals are having gallows humour fun.  Sometimes we're all putting socks on the security fence around the hole in the ground, and sometimes it's more quirky:

But at the base of it, we're just dealing with the same old crap, and it's really sad.

Warning:  This is graphic stuff, so if you've got a weak stomach do not proceed.

from https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/05/lisa-montgomery-death-row-execution-history

Quote'A lifetime of torture': the story of the woman Trump is rushing to execute

Lisa Montgomery, the only woman on death row, was found guilty of an 'especially heinous' crime – but those who have looked deeply into her agonized life see it differently.

Lisa Montgomery's first experiences of sexual abuse occurred indirectly when she was three years old. She would lie in bed at night beside her beloved half-sister Diane, close enough to touch, while Diane, then eight, was being raped by their male babysitter.

At the age of 11, Montgomery learnt what it was like to be attacked herself. Her stepfather Jack, a "mean drunk" who regularly beat her and her mother, began raping her once or twice a week.

The assaults became such an important part of Jack's life over the next four years that he built a room for the girl on the side of their trailer, deep in the Oklahoma woods. It had its own entrance, so that he could come and go as he desired and nobody would know or hear her screams.

He would rape and sodomise her, often with a pillow smothering her face. When she resisted, he slammed her head so hard against the concrete floor that she suffered traumatic brain injury, MRI brain scans would later show.

One day, her mother Judy happened to enter the room while the child was being assaulted by her husband. Judy was so incensed she fetched a gun and held it to her daughter's head, screaming: "How could you do this to me?"

Over time, the abuse expanded. Montgomery's stepfather invited friends round to gang rape her in the room – ordeals that would last for hours and end with the men urinating on her like she was trash. Her mother got in on the act too, selling Montgomery's body to the plumber and the electrician whenever she needed odd jobs doing.

This is Lisa Montgomery's story.

These were her formative experiences which doctors, psychologists and social workers have all concluded amounted to torture endured across years. This is the woman, now aged 52, whom the Trump administration intends to put to death in seven days' time on grounds that she is such a cold-hearted murderer that even being locked up for the rest of her natural life would be insufficient punishment.

On Friday, a US appeals court cleared the way for the execution to proceed. The move was enthusiastically endorsed by the US justice department which has argued under Trump that Montgomery is guilty of an "especially heinous" crime. But those who have looked deeply into the agonized life that lay behind her criminal act see it differently.

"This is a story about a woman who is profoundly mentally ill as a result of a lifetime of torture and sexual violence," said Sandra Babcock, faculty director of the Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide and a consultant to Montgomery's legal team. "Lisa is not the worst of the worst – she is the most broken of the broken."

What she did to land her on death row was utterly horrific - no doubt about that, and if you want to know what it was, follow the link.

But the reason I'm sad is that she's on death row, yet you can bet that none of the people who abused her as a child were ever held accountable for what they did - and neither were the people who knew something, but failed to help her - such as the police, social services, doctors, neighbours etc.  Had this person been taken out of that abusive situation early in the piece and received help, the story could have been so different.  Had she been helped as an adult, it could still have been different to where it ended up.

If you ever suspect something like this, don't turn away. Say something, to someone who can help.  Don't stand by and do nothing - don't say it's "private business" - we're all human beings and we should look out for one another, including when someone has the misfortune to be abused at the hands of the people closest to them.  How many people turned a blind eye, and consigned this child to the hell she grew up in...

Another terrible irony:  That the very people signing the paperwork for this person's execution will probably never be held accountable for even a fraction of their own crimes against society and other human beings.  :frowning:
Title: Re: What made you feel sad today?
Post by: SueC on March 18, 2021, 10:39:29
OK, I'm genuinely sad right now so here goes, and this time it's something to do with me.  12 years ago I found myself suddenly unable to speak in the middle of teaching my favourite class (really bright, fun 15-year-olds), as if someone had thrown roller bearings down my throat.  For a long time after that, I could only whisper, and I was frequently choking on my food and having difficulty swallowing, while trying to convince my then-not-so-great GPs (in a strangled whisper, which is not the most effective way to advocate for yourself) that no, this was NOT laryngitis and please stop telling me to rest my voice and sniff saline.  It took six months before I finally got endoscoped, and the diagnosis was idiopathic nerve damage to one of the vocal cords, resulting in a paralysed vocal cord.

At the time that devastated me.  The problem had happened a couple of weeks before the summer break, and I'd taken time off work already.  There was no way I could go back teaching fulltime with this condition.  This started us down a completely different path - I sat down and designed and costed a passive solar off-grid eco-house as our own long-term home and as a continued demonstration project for what was possible on a modest (for Australia) mortgage that most people would be able to afford.  We then spent five years owner-building this home (the last four years weren't fulltime and we lived in it within 18 months), and now run a part-time educational farmstay out of it, to let people test-drive off-grid, low-footprint living with a sustainable agriculture setting and with 50 hectares of nature conservation which we manage similarly to the Indigenous Australians, for bushfire risk reduction and biodiversity - all of which I now write about for various independent outlets.

It was sort of like what a good friend of mine did - she'd emigrated to Australia from South Africa with her husband and two young girls, because their house had burnt down uninsured back home, and they had to start completely from scratch financially, from nothing - they'd sold their land to pay back the mortgage.  They decided that if they stayed in South Africa they'd forever be looking back - "If only this hadn't happened" - while to move somewhere completely different meant they would then have lots of new people and experiences in their lives which they would not have had if this terrible thing hadn't happened to them.

It's a good strategy - both she and I are very happy with where we are now at, in our lives after disaster, and have had plenty of compensations that way for the losses we experienced.  We both think our lives are on balance better than they were before.

The voice thing hit me very hard at the time, and you don't know how hard that's going to hit until it happens to you.  Because it's amazing how much our own self is tied to how we sound - it's how we communicate, not just words but emotions, it's how we sing etc (and I used to sing in a choir recreationally).  It's incredibly frustrating when you can't communicate effectively through speech.  For me it was about a year of strangled whispering interrupted by coughing, with a really weak voice on good days - and on good days I went back to the school I'd previously taught at, to take casual classes, because I knew the students and we had a good relationship, and they didn't take advantage of my inability to project my voice - they were terrific, and it was lovely to be able to continue to work with them once or twice a week.  (The school would ring me and ask me if I was up to it, and I'd go in if I was.)

There was a stage about a year in where the weak voice would suddenly shoot right up the scale and I'd sound like a cartoon character, which was actually really embarrassing.  Eventually that settled and became an occasional problem, and I had a sort-of voice for speaking softly most of the time - but I couldn't use it to teach more than 2-3 days a week because it was too difficult to do, and I could only do that on the good days, and I never knew when the good days would be; I'd not know that until I woke up in the morning.

The prognosis was:  If it doesn't come back fully within a year - sometimes nerves heal up - then it's very unlikely that it's ever going to.  And it didn't.  I did DIY stuff at home like sing in the shower - didn't sound the same, but I'd just do the stuff I used to do for choir practice - send those messages to the larynx as a sort of physiotherapy.  That was probably the most helpful thing I did for my voice and resulted in having a conversational voice which to most people sounds within range of normal, unless I'm having a bad day.  It's not the voice I had before, it's more like the voice I had before at a certain stage of recovering from a cold.  It's an effort to speak and it's resulted in speaking faster (because less words can get out on the one breath), less modulation, and less resonance.

Because of that, I booked in for a follow-up with an ENT - ten years into the tree-change that resulted from the original injury (it's been a busy decade, and I've not had to speak that much).  I wanted to know if I had secondary damage to my vocal cords from the effort of speaking and all the coughing that goes with this condition on bad days, and also if there was anything that could be done to improve where things are at right now.

I got scoped again and basically, the nerve is permanently dead.  Because my voice had recovered significantly from the starting point straight after the injury, I had thought that maybe the nerve had reached partial functioning again, but the ENT told me that everything I'm doing, I'm doing with a single operational vocal cord straining to get into proper apposition to a paralysed cord that hangs in space across a gap.  He calls this adaptation, and says I've adapted reasonably well, but that's why it's such an effort, and not how it was before, and why I have issues with swallowing and clearing my throat - all the muscles down the injured side don't work because they don't get signal coming through.

The good news was that I don't have secondary damage from speaking with compromised equipment, coughing lots, etc.  He says the mucosal edges of the vocal cords are both healthy - no scarring, no polyps etc.  And he's booked me in for a day surgery to inject collagen into the tissue to the side of the vocal cord to narrow that gap and push it into better apposition - it's a temporary solution that lasts 6-9 months and should make the speaking and swallowing side easier.  It will make my airway slightly narrower than it is already from the injury (because the paralysed side doesn't open or close, it just hangs in space) and give me a trial period in which to assess if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.  If they do, I can repeat the procedure whenever it wears off, or start thinking about switching to an alternative filler that doesn't get re-absorbed from the area with time.

When I was first scoped in 2009, I cried buckets after the diagnosis.  I loved my work, this was the end of being able to do that fulltime, plus it was so difficult trying to communicate with people who didn't know me and weren't aware what had happened.  There was judgement from some people, and idiots talking down to me like I had an IQ of 50, because I couldn't get my words out on bad days.  I couldn't speak on the phone because attempting to project would send me into coughing fits and laryngeal spasm.  These days I can, and I mostly pass within range of normal, but I've got to admit, today I'm grieving all over again, because I used to have a nice voice, not just the much-reduced thing I have now, and it would be so good if someone could click their fingers and I could be like I was before.

Everyone who has a physical loss has to confront that, of course - paraplegia, amputation, burns to the face, even just the normal wear and tear of ageing - things like that affect our identities and change our lives forever.  But, the one thing you can do when you're confronted with something like that is to make sure that some of that change will be for the better - and if that had never happened to me, we'd not be where we are now.

Since my nerve died, we've downshifted and tree-changed.  We've designed and built our own house on a shoestring budget and built much of it with our own two hands, and we've planted over 5,000 trees and understorey plants into the pastures on our smallholding to create shelterbelts that reduce soil erosion and create livestock shelter and wildlife habitat (a bit like hedgerow farming).  We're conserving and managing 50ha of near-pristine native vegetation on our place and have a very active, hands-on role in maintaining its wonderful biodiversity.  I've become a homesteader with a permaculture garden that goes a long way towards feeding us, and I have lots of time for writing, so I wrote for various independent magazines for ten years.  When the pandemic happened I took a break and only wrote for fun, mostly here, because I love music and because writing about music literally lets me write about all the things that matter to me in life.  (Well, if it's the right kind of music!  ;))

I won't be sad much tomorrow, but today I'm sad for the nerve that died and for the loss of the voice I used to have.  You can do a whole bunch of proactive things, you can choose your attitude, etc etc.  But sometimes, you still have to grieve, even in the face of all the good things that happened as a result of the bad thing that happened.   :'(

A former shop on our street, which has been used as a day care center for toddlers for several months. I walk past it every day. Somebody must have bothered about it, because now both (show) windows are two-thirds taped shut. Sometimes there was a pacifier on the sidewalk. I returned it. The female manager seemed friendly. I have no children of my own and only see old and sick people almost every day. The sight was good for my soul. That is over now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh, that's sad, @Ulrich. And now I'm thinking about the time I accidentally ran over and killed a little Southern Brown Bandicoot, in 1994, going up to Stony Hill in Albany. These guys are around the same size as European squirrels, but are ground-dwelling.

If I hit something I always stop and check and move the animal - usually it's birds, once or twice a year, when they dive-bomb down to windscreen level from roadside bushes and we're in a 110km/h zone. The bandicoot was on a slow road to a car park and I was doing about 40km/h when it darted out from the bushes and went under the tyres before I could react. I was so sad, although I noted when I checked the animal that it was a male, and this is less devastating to marsupial populations than losing a female, because the female marsupials are the incubators and do all the looking after offspring (while birds etc often raise young as breeding pairs) and the males can "service" several females. So losing the odd male won't result in less young being born next year, or less parental care.

If you guys think that's tough, spare a thought for our antechinuses - the vast majority of males die immediately after the annual breeding season, reputedly of exhaustion from super-long copulations - leaving no male antechinuses in the population until the next batch are born. It's an adaptation which benefits the species by reducing resource competition for the pregnant females, which allows them to produce better-nourished litters.

Antechinuses might look a bit like mice, and are barely any bigger, but they are insectivores and spend a lot of time hunting.

PS: I have a little good-news story to follow the sad one about hitting a bandicoot in 1994 - but it starts with another death unfortunately. Back in 2013 I was walking the dog on Mt Clarence when I came across a dead female bandicoot on a 4WD track - she'd been run over. I turned her over and found two young on her underside; both had survived. I had no bag on me and they were too delicate to go in pockets, so I thought for a bit, then took off a sock and put them in it, and carried them out in the sock, where they didn't get squashed and had enough oxygen and warmth. They went to a wildlife rehabilitation centre, where we visited them the following week. They had both survived and were doing well - one female, one male.  This was Brett holding them for a photo:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/3725/11018911836_82877d0986_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/hMGNAy)

They continued to do well and were re-released into the wild when they grew up. While not every animal survives long after getting placed back into nature, bandicoots tend to have a good chance - they are herbivores and have good instincts.

This piece of news by The Waterboys:

QuoteSTEVE STEPS BACK
It's with a heavy heart we announce that our great friend and musical hero Steve Wickham is retiring from Waterboys touring after an almost unbroken period of twenty-one years (not forgetting 5 more years in the 1980s).  Steve will return for projects in the future but won't be part of the regular Waterboys touring line-up anymore. He's made the decision so he can concentrate on his own work. We wish him every success and look forward to when future Waterboys projects bring him back for more adventures.  We'll keep you posted on what he gets up to.  Steve has explained to us his reasons and Mike and Brother Paul have commented too:

Steve: "The downtime during covid changed my life and priorities. It reconnected me with my creativity, and I need to go deeper with this.  In the recent years I'd become more of a legacy musician within the Waterboys, playing a big part in the older music onstage but less in the new music and recent albums. So I've decided to retire from Waterboys touring to concentrate on my own work and interests, which include my Sligo-based band No Crows, my art studies, solo music, theatre composing and things yet to come into focus. I still consider myself part of the Waterboys family and will return from time to time as projects require.  My time as fiddler with The Waterboys, and specifically with Mike, has been a life defining and soulful experience and I've loved every moment of it. Mike is a great musician and writer and it's been a privilege and joy to work and share that space of high inspiration with him for so long."

Mike: "Steve's been part of the heart and soul of The Waterboys for so long it's gonna be strange working without him.  But I know we're not finished yet; there'll be more at some stage, and it will be great.  I always enjoy his extra-curricular activities so I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop.  Most of all I want to thank him for his continued brotherhood, for enhancing my songs with his unique magic and for twenty-six years of great playing in the band."

Paul:  "There are so many things I'll miss about being in a band with Steve.  Among the top is his genuine kindness, his never-dimming crazy-beautiful infectious energy on stage, and the glowing energy we've shared on the stage night after night.  I will continue channeling his Spirit through each and every performance of my own.  And, while I join Mike and the rest of you all in wishing him an AMAZING new life and musical journey, I will still always look forward to new adventures in some way, place, and time!  Thank you and epic love and best wishes from here Stevo~~~~!!"

Just heard that Henry Lincoln (born Henry Soskin) has passed away.  :'(

He was an actor and writer, he was for example in a "The Saint (=Simon Templar)" episode and wrote several "Dr Who" episodes back in the 1960's.
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0511110/

He was more known for presenting several documentaries about the mystery of Rennes-le-Château and co-writing the book "The Holy Blood & The Holy Grail".

I met Henry while travelling south France back in 2011 and 2013 (he was our "guide" for a while), I had a few little run-ins with him (he didn't enjoy my ironic one-liners) but I liked him and how he presented to us his own view of the landscape and buildings there.  :cool

Sad to hear he passed away (aged 92).

PS: Now there is a dispute about an alleged "engagement". Then the marriage would have to follow this year. Can't shake the feeling like I involuntarily encouraged this. 😕

A reason to be glad! For starters, it was a bad idea to hold this in Qatar, so it will have to happen in winter, because our overpaid "football stars" don't wanna play in the heat... :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

And there are many other problems:

QuoteCampaigners are pressuring Germany, Denmark and Norway to boycott the 2022 FIFA World Cup in protest against human rights conditions in the host country, Qatar...
https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/pressure-mounts-for-teams-to-boycott-2022-world-cup-in-qatar/

QuoteWhile this year's draw ended up being relatively even-handed throughout, the reality is the spectre of death will loom over every single one of the tournament's 64 fixtures. That may sound hyperbolic, but with 6,500 workers reported to have died during stadium construction for FIFA's showpiece event, it's an accurate projection of what awaits us in December. It's why I've decided to make a personal decision and boycott this year's tournament.

This is indeed a reason to be sad...  :'(

Ward passed away in Tunbridge Wells hospital on May 17: although no details of his cause of death have been revealed, he was known to have had serious health issues for some time.

Born in Croydon, south London on July 11, 1959, Ward first broke into the spotlight with The Saints, joining the Brisbane punk band after they relocated to London in the summer of 1977. He played on the band's classic singles This Perfect Day and Know Your Product, in addition to their 1978 album Eternally Yours.

After The Saints fell apart in 1979, Ward joined The Damned, playing bass on their critically-acclaimed third album Machine Gun Etiquette after Captain Sensible switched from bass to guitar.

I have to admit that I didn't have Tina Turner on my screen anymore. She may rest in peace, just like Helmut Berger and we are not so far away from her adopted home. All these details about her life and then the fact that her property has been stormed is a bit much for me at the moment. I find the current K(arl) L(agerfeld) - bashing just as unpleasant. People ignore that he himself was overweight. He even wrote a book about his diet. He would not have needed it because of the money, but I think he inspired and encouraged quite a few, through his work and his books. In other words, he knew that he was a public person, but also a caricature of fashion circuit, if you will. In my eyes, he is the last big esthet that Europe had. We should recognize his legacy.

While I wasn't a big fan, I was sad to hear the news about Sinead O'Connor.  :'(

Saw her live at a festival once (with The Cure, Heather Nova, NMA and others).

Someone I've known for a long time (or thought I knew) unexpectedly went out of business ten months ago. As I stood in front of the closed doors, I could just make out a sign stating that the closure would only be for one year. I then involuntarily went to the shop where the person once did her training and her master's degree. I'm not really happy there. I get "passed around" and pay a third more. They're friendly, but I'm not really welcome. The store is just too "elitist" for me. I am disappointed because she was always focused on her work and nothing else. She vehemently denied any desire to have children if we ever discussed it. Now I met her today with her almost one-year-old son and found out that she will not be returning to her job. Her only employee is in retraining - what, I didn't want to ask. I'm really disappointed because she could and should have communicated it better, especially since she shares her private happiness with others on social media, but not her true motives and intentions.  :?
