Not sure that it actively attracts them. Just that the vast majority of the cyber community are running a windows PC of some description & so the likelihood of any attack is that much greater.
back OT (on topic ;)) regarding the packaging. If the bands offering the downloads can also offer the cover art as part of the download, that wouldn't be so bad. I got the artwork with the Porcupine Tree downloads. The only thing you need then is access to a decent quality printers. For me that's not so bad, as I manage a team the services HP printers.

no it's not just the matter of attraction and/or likelihood. i'm not sure about linux viruses, but with mac, well you just practically don't have viruses that would get activated within mac OS, it's that simple. it's possible that you might "host" a pc virus on mac (meaning that it might slip to your computer with some attachment or something) but it doesn't affect the system in any way, it can cause no harm. so it's not that pcs were somehow more likely to be attacked because they were more common - the viruses are designed for a certain OS. to contaminate linux computer, you'd need to design a special virus for linux OS: not sure if those exist, i'd be surprised if they even do.
so i guess people seem to hate bill gates the most because all viruses seem to be designed to contaminate and run down pcs running on windows...

whenever i get a new album, i always listen to it on my CD player, never ipod. i listen to all the tracks from start to finish, in order... for me it just feels wrong not to do this... ive always done it, and i feel that they were picked in that order by the artist for a certain reason, so  i like to listen to them like that.. but then after ive done that then i listen to them in whatever order.
I think I should finish soon, I think I should end. Magic and dreams and the end of the world. In the Hanging Garden...

@imaginarynancyboy
I do the same (unless it's a downloaded concert).
But the thing with me is that I actually work about 120km from where I actually live, so I rent a flat in this town & travel back at the weekends.
It's a bit of a pain in the backside to drag my whole hifi here & back each weekend (it's enough with the cat), so I usually rip the discs to my ipod I connect up to my itrip to listen to in the car.
I also have a totally brilliant pair of Sennheiser earphones (tip for ipod owners: Throw the bundled ear phones in the bin & spend a bit of money on decent ones), so when I rip, I rip in lossless formats & when go out for a walk I can appreciate it more.
Only downside is that I have almost filled up my 80gb ipod now, so I need to do some housekeeping i fear.
I was thinking last night about the downloading of music. My guess it is going to be predominantly mp3s that are available. I find it quite perverse to think that the live (bootleg) recordings we all enjoy right now are eventually going to be of a higher standard than the available downloads :?

As  Reported in The Herald Sun today October 4th: the day the music died by Cameron Adams;

" "Australians are still downloading entire albums-up to almost150 per cent this year...Local downloaders prefer to pick and choose. Many commentators blame this on growing disappointment with albums on the the heavy use of sub-standard material..many also blame the record industry for committing musical suicide.
Cure frontman Robert Smith is in the unusual position of sweating over the track listing of a new Cure album to be released in an environment in which many listeners will hear it only as part of a shuffle"

Robert says " I'm very aware of a younger generation having no concept of track listing, they just jump and shuffle on their iPod. I think it's an alien way of listening to albums. We are on th cusp of a serious shift in the way people listen to music. It's happening around us." The Cure have one album left on their deal with Geffen Records, and Smith sees a time when bands will bypass record companies altogether.
   Robert goes on to say" The strange thing is the Cure are one of the few bands who don't sell that many pick-and-mix songs. We actually sell albums. People still want Pornography the album. They don't just want A Hundred Years, they want the whole album.
Now It'll be very difficult to keep that idea of an album established. I think people want to hear albums from the past the way they were meant to be heard. I suspect that will fade. I won't be around to see it."  "

  I hope this does not mean the end is nigh!! :cry: What does it mean? I always certainly purchase albums, and would want the whole album and nothing but the whole album. What is the opinion out there?

I read that article too, that's why I went out and spent $400 on Cure CD's!  :smth020

I think they should MP3 players and stuff because CD's are fun to collect in their entirety (album covers, lyrics etc.) and musicians should get the money for their music.

AH, EVERYTHING MUST GO!

YOU CANT STOP PROGRESS...

THEN AGAIN:

INDUSTRY WILL CERTAINLY FIND IT'S WAY TO MAKE PROFIT
BANDS WILL HAVE TO PLAY LIVE TO MAKE MONEY

yes I suppose it's all true,  more artists are just making their music available to fans, e.g. Kylie is going to release her new song a day before it officaially goes out, available to download to fans... but everything is then just virual, lacking substance.

If I'm going to buy something over the net, I'll buy the whole album so I can actually have a hard copy of it. Even if it costs me a few extra dollars. I like having cds and I like having the little booklet of lyrics/pictures that comes with it. I really dislike shuffle ipods because they mix all your music up.. I want to listen to my music in order, dammit! :eek:

I miss the packaging with downloaded albums and generally refuse to pay for mickey-mouse quality mp3s. I might consider buying more downloads in lossless if they weren't too expensive, but in general if I am going to buy something I want the packaging and sleevenotes etc, and they sound a lot better through my hi-fi (although my PC sounds quite good through it too). I bought the recent River Run singles by Underworld which came with some awesome electronic packaging and movies and pics. I thought these were great except that the bitrate was only 192k mp3 and one was 160k mp3. They were only a fiver though for 30 mins each approximately, so not too bad. I prefer to DL albums to check them out and then buy them if there is enough on it that I like.

I always prefer putting on a CD sitting back and listening to it in full, and I too like the whole idea of the artwork/packaging rather than just having countless tracks on an ipod :rocker

exactly. I like to listen to quality product (whic downloads aren't). A lot of the bands I like take time to make a record sound the way it does and I want to appreciate it for what it is. There will always be a market for the physical product - it is just getting smaller and therefore we will have to pay more for it.
I like what Radiohead are doing. Selling the discbox is a good idea. I'm sucker for a package like that and want the Cure to do something similar with the new album.

I understand what Robert is talking about, but things will definately change, good or bad, and we will end up liking it all.  He has nothing to worry about with his fans not listening to all of his songs.  I, for one, will listen to every one of his songs!  There is something about his peotry that entails a feeling of relaxation in us and to inspire to live life to the fullest.  Cure fans know what Robert and Co. are capable of in the musical talents and we will strive to listen and peice together a well written musical encore.  To this day The Cure display the most compelling and heartwrenching concerts ever and no one can touch him.  He puts on a show and how he thinks it should be and sometimes even adds new lyrics to a song or two.

For digital downloads, yes I will buy one song froma band, but when it comes to the Cure, i will always get the whole CD.  Even if the album sucks, I will alway let the music grow on me, because Robert knows how to put together a musical genius!
