Title: Rapidshare
Post by: fannwenner on May 06, 2008, 18:06:40
For you experienced rapidshare users:
If I have a premium account on rapidshare.com, do I have to buy a separate premium account for rapidshare.de? Free downloads take ages - one part every 3 hours...

one of the reasons why i'm always amazed why so many people even use rapidshare  - it's just pretty damn annoying imo (i mean rapidshare, not those people using it).

if one wants to/needs to use some free upload/download services, there really are a lot less annoying choices than rapidshare which at least i find one of the most annoying of them all (i mean i find rapidshare annoying, not the fact that there are less annoying alternatives).

i have 'purchased premium' rapidshare accounts at times.. only to ensure that i don't get mega-rip-offs and ensure limited adds, etc..

@fannwenner .. i have been extremely frusted with the downloads, I have top-speed broadband, but still find rapidshare.... not so rapid!

Just disconnect your internet once you have downloaded a part, then re-connect and you can instantly start downloading the next part.

It works for me, at least.

Only works if you have a dynamic IP address.
If you completely disconnect (cable aswell) & then reconnect, your ISP assigns another IP address from there alloted group.
That usually fools rapidshare.
But a premium account for a month doesn't cost a lot really & then you don't have to wait around forever.
What are the better alternatives in terms of hosting services?

imo $10 per month IS a rip-off deal. hosting services only make sense to me if they are free. i mean, if one needs to pay for some web-based storage space then why spend that money on a hosting service?
i don't like any of these hosting services because they are all annoying as hell and only become bearable if you give up and submit paying their rip-off prices. but imo even megaupload is a lot better than rapidshare - rapidshare is simply the most annoying service i've ever come across (did i already mention that? huh?): rapidshare is often quite slow, it's expensive (by the way no possibility for a lifetime membership, in case one really needed to rely on some hosting service a lot). and even without premium, megaupload doesn't make you wait some crazy-ass time inbetween downloads.

anyway, personally i don't really mind that much since i don't even use these services much at all. so what am i ranting here? :-P i guess sometimes i'm just wondering why people love this rapid(=slow)share so much.

Japanesebaby is right. Rapidshare is the worst file-share service ever. I totally discourage it use. There are so many better and less annoying services, for instance:

yousendit.com
gigasize.com
sendspace.com

Any of these is like heaven compared to rapidshare (altought not perfect).

Don't use rapidshare. Don't buy a premium account. Don't waste your time!

Just an advice :smth023

i agree.. i HAVE purchased a premium account awhile ago.. but i don't think I will ever do it again.
The cost is a rip-off, as well as the s-l-o-w service it asks for the extortion price.

and here i was about to buy a month's worth of premium. I find Megaupload to be good. Steve, do you mean physically disconnecting the cable modem from the PC or disconnecting the cable modem from the power?

Well apparently
yousendit.com
gigasize.com
sendspace.com

Yousendit, I found to be the slowest hosting site I know.
gigasize, has porn links all down the right hand side.
sendspace, well, I am lucky if it actually opens.

Of course, I am trying to access from Hungary, so that might be the reason why I have problems with them.
But, seriously, yousendit sucks.

But, again, anything I say will be shot down in flames I guess.
Just use what ever's easiest for you.

Rapidshare is pretty horrible. The new captcha they use is pure torture and if you have to wait anywhere between 1 and 100 minutes inbetween files. Its slow too. Forget that.

Megaupload seems like the obvious choice but Ive actually been looking into some good alternatives. And I found something pretty interesting

http://www.filedropper.com - 5GB filesize, no captcha, cheap premium membership allowing 250GB storage. A bit on the slow side though

but nobody's forcing you to click those links - or...? ;)

(btw, i don't see any porn links there, left or right - so maybe it's a hungarian specialty?)

ps. it's clear there are differencies according to where you're located. and i'm not shooting down anyone's ideas here intentionally, nor is anyone else i assume. people are just describing their experiences, ok? :?:
all i can say out of my own experience, i have to be REALLY motivated to download something is the links are rapidshare links - i usually pass, even if it's something rather interesting. because there're simply enough all kinds of annoyances in my daily life even without it.
just a personal opinion. like all other opinions in this thread too, i suppose.

Yeah, you're right.
I think that, depending on where you are (isp etc.) the offers are different (but here I do have links for webcam feeds for suspiciously young ladies who all appear to live in Budapest. :?)
I daren't click on them tbh

Horses for courses really.

all i really see there is some boring money exchange adverts - so no webcams.

(but why should you even wonder whether or not you'd dare to click them? i mean, these sites rely on advertising so one really can't choose what they throw at you - that's not to say i defend that sites advertising choices, in any way. but one gets that kind of stuff all the time in the web, on some really innocent situations. when i do some song lyrics searches something pretty similar might often come up on my screen: some "hot new friends" in my local neighborhood (sure). etc. etc. again, i'm not saying it's ok and call me numb then but since it's something that one can't change then maybe the trick is not to care. perhaps there are worse things to worry about(?).)

Anyone used filefront?
Looks a bit "adware-y" & it keeps timing out on me.
I'm trying other sites to see if there are real benefits & this one was recommended by a friend in Poland.

ive been using divshare - but its been for relatively small files like one song or a video, not whole performances. is it slow for those? the good thing about divshare is that its got none of those icky ads that so many other sites depend on to keep it going. its hard explaining to your mom that your just downloading a show lol

i hate rapidshare, its bleeding slow. but i thought most people chose megaupload or somethng like that nowadays?

steve - i've been using filefront for many files of all sorts for a couple of years now, but not for full shows. i didnt have any problems

I can post some examples, if necessary.

No need, but thanks.
I never saw any ads or anything IIRC on Vapidshare

thats been in effect for a while. you dont have to wait or input a captcha code when their bandwidth is open enough. you still need to wait 100 years between files tho

we should just have a curefans torrent tracker...

ok, it's starting to sound official: obviously they are offering you free premium slots for lobbying for them. right?

if people want really comfortable ways of filesharing, they use ftp or torrents.

Title: Re: Rapidshare
Post by: japanesebaby on June 07, 2008, 13:50:04
some people don't like megaupload because they have the reserved amount of download slots per country, and if you happen to be in a country where the slots are few, you run into this problem every now and then.
i've heard some people preferring rapidshare for this reason - yet i only just learned that rapidshare is not free of this either:

Error

You want to download the following file: ***************************

Currently a lot of users are downloading files. Please try again in 2 minutes or become a Premium member

Please note, the server is not going to check again within the next 2 minutes if downloading is possible again. To provide a fair platform, all user get the same options. Your last attempt was 30 seconds ago.

i've heard that with megaupload, you can override the "slot problem" by pretending to be from some other country than your own (i.e. to use for instance german or french site if you're not form those countries yourself). looks like with rapidshare you cannot override this at all because it's not based on "slots per country".

OMG no!
I didn't even think of that TBH. & I got a link this week from a Spanish friend & that was the first time I opened up the page to be greeted with dodgy looking spyware type dialogues flashing in my face.
On your megaupload point, you can, by translating the page into another language, sometimes trick it.
I also have access to 2 other servers via a vpn client. One in England & one in Germany, so if I get the "no slots available" message, I can go through another server (also beats the download limits  ;))
But, it is true that FTP & torrents are by far & away the easiest & prolly the safest way to share.

since spyware obviously seems to be one of your continuing worries, i would actually have a simple solution for you --> get a mac (http://www.apple.com/)
i don't want to turn this into just another mac vs. pc threads but seriously, that'd be the end of all those continuous fears you seem to be having.

I know. I've been told that dozens of times LOL.
I'm using firefox now though & that seems to fend them off quite well.
My fears only really stem from the last time I got "bitten". Just being ultra cautious really.

I sometimes buy premium account to rapidshare because "I don't understand russian". I had a problem downloading anything in .rar or .zip with browser but the rapidshare download manager was actually spyware and adware free and good for that, no need to everytime give your password and login

I got a bit annoyed when I found out a premium account at rapidshare.com didn't give you premium access to rapidshare.de. I had an account for a few months when I was DL a lot of shows from another site and it helped quite a bit. I do prefer megaupload though (I have a lifetime account that I bought a few years ago when I first found this site and was DL all the mp3s I could lay my hands on :-D)

Me too. When I joined Etree in the late 90's that's how it was done. Private FTPs with logins and passwords. Slots were hard to come by for some sites, but if you were persistent you'd get in. I really like BT because anyone can do it, but there's no personal contact anymore (or much less). I kinda miss that.
