Am I right in noticing that there is a bit of a gap during the festivals.

Been away a few days. Almost having a heart attack here. Thanks for the link  And here I was thinking it couldn't possibly happen, & now there is maybe just the faintest hope it will.

The rumour hasn't been dispelled since it appeared in January & yeah I know it's not official until it's on the official site, but even the Splendour organisers are still going along with it saying "that rumour is still alive and kickin" their Facebook page.

Still hoping 

Got tickets for Leeds! Am so excited, my first time to see them. Will Curefans be gathering that day?

Yes, Bob said this to NME sometime ago. I wouldn't be scared. He didn't say on this interview that they won't record an album "anymore". He just said that it has "to be good" otherwise he won't make it. But he already talked about the dark album and so on. I'm sure they will release something this or next year. At the moment, we have the Summer festivals. At least something.

Well, it's not unusual for The Cure to go out and do festivals before they record something new. They did this in 1995 and 1998 for example. I myself am quite sure that there won't be a new album before summer 2013 (if that), they would have to go to the studio first of all (and usually it takes a while until everything is polished up and finished).

New music will come eventually 
Just a bit freaky about my comment about the gaps in between festivals in Europe maybe leaving a space for "something else " over the other side of the world, & then it appearing in the article.
Anyway I'm stalking musicfeeds amongst other sites at the moment. Just a snippet of the article today.

"Now the guessing for the Saturday night headliner begins. There have been rumours of The Cure returning to Australia since their more-than-magnificent Vivid Live show (Steve Pav, I am still more than grateful) and they seem more than fitting to headline the festival. They have announced a string of European festival dates, but unfortunately the band have ruled out recording any new material, saying the want to focus on putting on a more memorable show (Bittersweet I guess)."
