Title: Best of: The Cure
Post by: KingOfSomeIsland on May 25, 2008, 00:52:41
Well weve put this off for long enough, Best song off the Cure's latest album "The Cure"

My favorite is The Promise since its just so strong and emotional. My second favourite is probably Going Nowhere, even if (or maybe because of) it's just a rehash of Homesick.

...Come again? They're not that alike are they, be fair now. (http://www.cureconnections.com/images/smilies/108.gif) Anyway, it's my favorite off this album, yep. Perhaps cause it's more of an "easy listening" track than most of the others. This album is slowly growing on me, by the way, but I don't think I'll ever fully embrace it...something went wrong. For example, I kind of like the b-side This Morning, but the arrangement just sounds so off. What happened there? Ross Robinson happened, perhaps... :smth016

The End of the World sounds much better live, by the way, doesn't it?:

i also think they are a bit overly similar. it's not the same as to say 'going nowhere' is a bad song. but it's simply something that is pretty obvious, the similarity.
i've always thought it's kind of ironic that that people don't mention 'homesick' too often as their favorite but pretty often do name 'going nowhere'. my personal thoery is that 'homesick' doesn't get picked by many simply because there are so many really good songs on 'disintegration', but in the context of 'the cure' album 'going nowhere' is among the best so it does get named. even if 'homesick' actually was the better song of the two. to me 'homesick' is a finished, well-outlined song and 'going nowhere' is a rough cut (i try not to use the word 'left-over' because it sounds negative) from the same basic idea.
just my opinion though.

(oh, must be too many words again - pardon me).

Sure there's a similarity in the way Rob sings, the pace of the two songs, and the sort of soft sound they both have, but melody-wise, in the most important sense, they're not THAT similar, in my view. They're different enough to be two independent songs rather than one being a "rehash" of the other. Oh well.

And I would only say Going Nowhere is my favorite when it comes to comparing it with the other songs on the album, yes, not otherwise.

but melody-wise, in the most important sense,

but the most important aspect is actually not the melody but the chords and the bassline on which the chords are founded on. not only here but also in general.
so the fact that the melodies are somewhat different is not enough to make them as "two entirely different, individual songs". melody is... just melody, whatever the style of music was.

I guess I have a more superficial way of listening to songs then, hmpf!  ;) Anyway, I can see how the chords and bassline make up the foundation of a song rather than the melody, yes. Touché...

By the way, they're not working with Ross Robinson on this new album as well, are they? Don't know anything on the current co-producer front...I'll go look it up...

Alright, then.

For me there are only 4 songs in "The Cure" that really deserve their place in the Cure catalogue: "Lost", "Labyrinth", "Anniversary" and "The Promise". The rest of the album is pretty much listenable but also forgettable. With the exception of "Never", which should have never really been recorded, let alone released.

And of those 4, my preference goes to "Lost". I think it's the best Cure song of the post-"Disintegration" period, together with "End". It´s dark and powerful in a "Pornography" kind of way, and at the same time it sounds different from the songs on that album.
Actually, the opening sequence "Lost"/"Labyrinth" is clearly the most intense they have done since "Disintegration". It´s a shame that what follows is such a letdown...

Labyrinth.  Love the guitar sound...For me, it perfectly portrays that sense I sometimes get of "something" not being right - you know you don't feel "right" but can't put your finger on exactly what's wrong....

Closely followed by Lost and The Promise...

I voted for 'Labyrinth'.  :smth023

I ordered the 'Taking Off' Single last week, I'm looking forward to finally hearing a couple of those infamous B-Sides.

I was so proud of my son (Xavier) who was about 2 at the time of the albums release.

His constant insistance on me playing "I can't find myself" pleased me ever so much. :)

What great taste he does have!

That´s pretty heavy stuff for a 2 year old kid, heh? :-D

And so, has he become a Cure fan or has he LOST the enthusiasm in the meantime?

I've just recently listened to "The Cure" right after Bloodflowers yesterday. This was like my fourth time listening to the album and for the life of me, I simply can't get into it. It's easily Robert's worst effort IMO. Songs sound uninspired and generic. No catchy melodies or hooks. Hardly any synths and the guitar playing is so so. Songs just don't contain the passion found in earlier Cure albums. Going from BF to this is like night and day. Even WMS is miles better.

Piggybacking on all that, I also find 4:13 rather lackluster, upon a second listen.

What are you guys' thoughts? Did Robert accurately predict he would "Lose the fire" when he wrote 39? Because unfortunately that appears to be the case  :(

I think when i got this album, i spent a week just listening to Lost on repeat before listening to the entire album...if that song was less goddamn rocking, i'd be tears everytime i hear that song

"Taking Off." Reminds me of the pop perfection of "Just Like Heaven," and it's the most upbeat song on the entire album

01 Alt.End (In Your House-tribute, and i feel it somehow really honest. And we can jump for it in the concerts)
02 Labyrinth (interesting psychedelic sound, á la Like Cockatoos. The lyrics is also great. It saves me several songs from the album)
03 Fake (it isn't a B-side? surprisingly honest and self-doubt lyrics, quite dull music, but this is enough here to the 3th place :( )

My fav of The Album THE CURE  : The Promise  Powerful song
Notice how none of the sentences resolve, how none of the notes he sing resolve, how the melodies, especially the bassline, never resolve, how the drums suspend touch the ground for less than a moment, and suspend again.... Everything is suspended awaiting resolution for ten minutes and fifteen seconds. Everything builds, but the climax never comes. his words come closer and closer to their full meaning, but the meaning never really comes, until you put it all together and realise that the joke is on you.

Lost and Labyrinth are two formidable songs, yet the final result is sadly compromised by Limp Shmizkit's production. So my vote goes to The End of The World, which works much better on the whole. A strong single!
