What a dump the Spectrum is :?.  It was built in 1967 when the Flyers entered the NHL.  I even played ice hockey there a couple times in high school.  But in comparison to other arenas, this place is ancient.  In fact, the first time I saw the Cure was in this building, 10 July 1986 (their second time in Philly- technically it was their first time in Philly since they played Upper Darby, PA in 1985 which is just outside the city border).

Yeah but it's actually a good place to see a concert, I think.
It's big, but not huge (like its newer big brother). So it might be good ... maybe.

Don't worry.  It seems nobody knows the password.  There should be plenty of great seats when they go on sale to the general public.

Sports complex development proposal unveiled

By MARCUS HAYES
Philadelphia Daily News

hayesm@phillynews.com
Think Inner Harbor. Think Atlantic City.

All you can do is think, though, because nothing is definite, yet.

"Philly Live!" entertainment complex, to be located on the parking lot between the two South Philadelphia sports complex arenas, is in such an embryonic planning stage that nothing is definite: not the price tag, not the plans, not the construction time, not the fate of the 42-year-old Wachovia Spectrum, which might be demolished sooner or later to accommodate a hotel/condominium structure.

It will be funded totally privately, essentially a 50-50 partnership between Comcast-Spectacor, which owns the arenas, and a developer called the Cordish Co., said David S. Cordish, president of the development company.

Cordish indicated today that a budget for the project could be determined within 3 months and a date for groundbreaking could be decided within 1 year, though Comcast-Spectacor chairman Ed Snider said he hoped the partnership could have more definite plans finalized before the end of February. Cordish's current financial estimate for the project: "A lot."

News of the project recently leaked, so the businesses decided to hold a press conference at which pictures of what the 300,000 square foot plaza might look like and might contain - a health club, a movie theater, retail shops, bars, clubs and restaurants - "Rather than springing it on everybody, like we had something to hide," said Comcast-Spectacor president Peter Luukko.

The Cordish Co. developed and has an equity interest in "Power Plant Live!" in Baltimore, a $35 million gems of the Inner Harbor. It also developed "The Walk" shops in Atlantic City, a $110 million project, as well as that city's outlet store complex.

Cordish yesterday called the sports complex the best opportunity he has ever seen for this sort of development.

Regarding what?  Sound?  It is your typical 15-18K seat venue.  If you've been to a show at the Wachovia Center, it is much the same, but more intimate, if that makes sense.  The Wacovia Center is like a cavern....open and vast.  the spectrum is a little bit smaller, and more closed.  The seats are literally on top of each other.  I am 5'10" and when I sit in the seats, my knees just touch the back of the seat in front of me.

Between the 2, the spectrum has better sound quality, in my opinion.  Hope this helps.  I can't tell you how many shows I've seen at the Spectrum.  Pantera, Sepultura, Prong, Black Sabbath, Cure, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Alice In Chains, Megadeth, Erasure, U2....the list goes on and on.  Bands I have seen at the Wachovia Center:  None!

Have we heard any new info regarding layout and seating for this show?  No offense to the band, but I really hope it's a half-house deal.  I don't know that they're popular enough to sell well in an 18,000 person venue in the US.

Hi Rodney,
There is the SEPTA R1 Airport Line that will take you from the airport to Center City Phila.  Here's a link below for more info.  Hope it helps & have a fun time in Philly!

Rodney-

Where are you staying?  If you are anywhere near center city, you can take the Broad Street subway line (I think it is the orange line- it's been years since I did it!) right to the Wachovia complex.  You can get the subway at a lot of places in Center City, including Market East and City Hall.

And the R1 is a cakewalk to get into center city.  Most out of towners don't even know about it because it isn't marketed very well at all.  Just follow the signs for the parking garage.  About halfway between security and the garage you'll see the steps down to the train platform.

If you let me know what airline you are coming in on (pm me if you feel safer) and I can give you more detailed info.  I am at the Philly airport EVERY Friday and Sunday, so I know that place very well!

No kidding.  I'm 5'10" and rarely am I able to see a show from the floor unobstructed.  I always end up behind a descendant of curefans member Stef, who is something like 9'3"

whoa. at download i ended up sitting right behind the music director of the only alternative station here in the san francisco bay area.. it wa so awesome meeting him. only thing is - the entire row in front of me including him consisted almost entirely of guys 6 feet or more. of course amphitheatres have the seats inclining upward - but even that wasnt enough. being 4'11 sucks, especially when you really want to be on the floor. and once youre on the floor without seats you get pushed around. *sigh*. i love mosh pits, but not when people push you around outside of them.

im really in awe of these fans that are going to mutiple shows in the different states, even countries. that costs money.. i, or should i say my dad spend about $200 or more on a concert, either because its a festival or we cant buy tickets as soon as they come out - and have to wait a couple weeks before the event and get them off ebay where the sellers jack up the prices to ludicrous amounts. doesnt anyone on the forums do some contributing to a music blog or magazine or anyone publication like that? they could get a photo pass and sometimes a photo pass means free admission

The press pass thing is tough to get, unless you work for a big publication.  For a few years, I wrote for a now defunct mag that was mainly dedicated to the Dead, computers, and other technology (great mix, huh?).  I did alot of new cd reviews and even did a phone interview with Beck that was never published, unfortunately.

Anyway, in 2004, I was a couple years removed from the mag, but still had a relationship with them.  I pitched a story idea comparing the crowd, setlist, and atmosphere of Cure shows in Europe vs. shows in the US.  They liked the idea and gave me everything I needed to get a press pass for the SF 2004 show.  I contacted their management and PR person (through Daryl) and submitted everything.  I was more or less told that the mag didn't have a large enough circulation and that my request for a press pass was denied.

I ended up running into Perry and Jason in the audience before the show anyway.  Perry actually remembered me from 3 weeks before when I met them all backstage in Camden!

I know exactly where you will be.  I guess it is about 5 or 6 miles from the venue.  Not bad for a taxi.  Just find out if there will be taxis after the show at the venue or if you need to call one.

A suggestion for getting downtown...see if the hotel has a free airport shuttle.  If so, take that to the airport, then get on the R1 to center city (Suburban Station).  Once you get to Suburban Station, you will be about a block from City Hall (the worlds tallest masonry building- they did not use steel to support the building- it is all rock!  It is the largest municipal building in the US).  I would suggest hitting South Street, between about 8th and 2nd street.  Great place to people watch.  Back in the day it used to be wall to wall punks!  Zipperheads (a shop on South street) was one of a very few places in the area where you could buy Doc Martens and Manic Panic hair dye, both staples of my youth.  I also used to live on 4th street, about 2 blocks behind Jim's Steaks.  In my opinion, if you are going to try a cheesesteak, go to Jim's at 4th and South.

Oh I know how you feel. I was at a Lou Reed show 2 weeks ago that was general admission and I'm only 5'8". The fellow standing in front of me was at least 6'1"  and for most of the show I was just peeking left and right over his shoulders until he finally moved off to the side haha.

haha, try being 4'11. with the the row in front of you almost completely made up of guys easily over 6 feet. amphitheatre seats  incline up, and i still couldnt see anything! but you get used to dancing on top of your seat after a while =)

i KNEW someone on here had to be involved in seomthing like that. how lucky you are!! very cool how Perry remembered you, they meet so many people, and three weeks can be a while. i miss perry in the band, i heard he was one of the sweetest members. i was actually offered to shoot the cure as well, which was my original plan - i never thought it would happen because as you said - its difficult and all the big press are lined up on the block to begin with. i was shocked to be freely offered, but i turned it down because a kid with a point and shoot will look AWKWARD in a pit full of photog pros.
how did you get backstage with the cure?! what did Beck say?! im very curious!

I suppose I could just fill in the next six songs.

Hopefully there will be enough time for a fourth encore after the "old school" one.

I'd kind of like to see the whole 7 song old school encore get played instead of the pop encore if they're that pressed for time. Let's Go To Bed and Freak Show vs. Fire in Cairo and 3IB? I'm going with the latter every time. The old school stuff sounds light years better with this lineup than the pop stuff does.

I agree with you 100%.  Leaving off 3IB and FIC on some nights is a shame.

Just got home from the show (and since I am on my home turf, I didn't get lost!)  Just tried to transfer the pics to my laptop using a different card reader, but no luck.  Maybe I'll just dump them on the desktop while I sleep, then burn a dvd, then upload them tomorrow night when I get back to my weekday home.

I am off to bed now....I've had 2 hours of sleep in the past 44 hours! :smth100

Just got home.. Great seats in row 2 section 215.  My entire row was practically empty which must have looked odd since I went alone. (wife wasnt feeling well and we have a new baby)

Great show. 3 hours.. They started at 8pm and finished at 11pm.  Very disappointed they didnt play Disintergration, a forest or charolette sometimes.  I expected at least 1 or 2 of those three to make it. Wouldnt have missed Never enough, alt.end and maybe someday if they were replaced by the others.  Oh well.. Considering I paid for 2 tickets and only used one I guess Im a little cranky.  Surprised to see the spectrum was only 1/2 full too.  Took a few photos with my phone and will try to post them tomorrow. very tired.

spectrum was only half-full?

I don't think it was half full.  As they do for alot of concert (and AHL hockey games) they hang a black curtain over the third level.  No seats were sold there.  The floor was full, from what I saw, most of the first level of the bowl was full, and the sides of the second level were well occupied.  It was by no means a sell out, but to say the place was only half full gives the wrong impression.

Keep in mind that this is the first time in 11 years they have played in Philadelphia (Tower Theatre 1997) and the first time in 12 tears that they have played the Spectrum.

Quoteoh, so they allowed cameras tonight as well?

There was a sign at the door stating that professional cameras and cameras with detachable lenses were not allowed.  It said something about personal and disposable cameras being allowed.  Another thing that was not allowed (per the sign) were signs.

If I recall correctly, signs, flowers and weapons were all grouped together in one sentence among the things that weren't allowed. (Somebody got flowers in anyway.)

I also suspect that the rescheduling of the show resulted in a number of empty seats.

no signs? that's got to be one of the silliest restriction that i've heard about.

(or if i'd be a narcistic person i might think that maybe robert got tired of that certain 'other voices' sign in europe and decided that a "no sing whatsoever!" policy is simply so much better! anyway it came from the venue of course, not from the band.)

Im not saying that it being half full is a good or bad thing... Just an observation thats all.  I was a little curious as to why they would be playing the spectrum to begin with. Like some have said the cure havent been in Philly in a long time and when the show was originally scheduled they didnt even have a new album out.

Either way the show was great and Im thankful I was able to see them in my town.   Just wish they would have played a few more of my fav's

btw.. there were tons of people taking photos with digital cameras and phones and security didnt seem to care.

right. i can imagine a sign outside some venue saying:
"professional cameras, video and audio equipment, guns, weapons and explosives and everything whatsoever (including flowers and signs) allowed! photographing and/or filming this sign is however not allowed and will lead to immediate confiscation of your photographic equipment as well as get you prosecuted in the court of law."

damn dude.
That sucks.

I had problems too and walked out with nothing.

I got fairfax, sound isnt too bad through speakers, just sounded bad in ear buds, but there is some clipping on the peaks because i went a bit nuts with the gain, and the echo in that place was terrible.

Trying to transfer it to the pc now, it keeps getting halfway through, then gives a  "can not read source file or disk" error message..

So i think this thing is toast.
Should have kept my DAT.

I'm thinking that was the same message I was getting when attempting to transfer the Download Festival.  If that's the case, you can use some file recovery software to transfer the files.  You'll most likely have some skips, though.  Have you tried playback on the iRiver?

I dont think there are any skips or dignoise in it.
It plays fine in a media player through the computer, and by itself with headphones too, it just wont transfer the file to the comp.
Tried 4 times, gets to that same spot and gives that message, strange.

I had skips during playback...due to the HD being shot.  Think of it like a scratch in a record.  The iRiver I was having issues with had something like three trouble spots.  Sound was fine other than those three spots.  Anyways, the skip(s), assuming you do have skips, would be the cause to your transfer difficulties.  Give it a listen, you'll be able to hear them.  If you're getting half way through the transfer process, that's where they start.

Well the show in Philly last night was excellent. Robert, Porl, Simon & Jason were just kicking it. They were very tight, sounded great & were full of energy. Robert was in cheery mood and was quite chatty off & on even thought I have no idea what he said with the exception of f*ck this & that a few times. Mr. Mumbles! LOL! Laughing The new songs were good. I love Freakshow & The Only One I'm liking it the more I hear it. And The Perfect Boy (quite Wishy sounding) was good even after just one listen.

I was surprised but very glad to hear Koyto Song, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep & The Kiss. The Kiss was insane! One of my favorites live! Highlights of the night for me were A Strange Day, Push, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea & the Old School Encore! I'm glad they changed the set-list a bit too. Would have liked to have heard some B-SIDES!!!!!!!!!! But still every song they played was great. I did miss the keyboards with some of the songs but Porl did an excellent job playing the KB parts on the guitar.  :-D

Robert does look a lot more thinner but I think he needs a better look. He was his in his usual just got out of bed look. Porl looked great. Loved his look, see through black shirt, shiny black pants with reflector strips & red (I think they were red) shoes. Simon was wearing that goofy hat in the beginning but he took it off. He looks great too having his usual black tank top & tight pants. Couldn't really see Jason from where I was.

The crowd was into the show well at least in the section I was in. Quite a bit of head bobbing & dancing & singing along. A mixture of young & older fans but plenty were more of the 80's Pop/Top 40 Fans. They only know the poppy stuff. When FYEOTDS, 100 Years, Grinding Halt, Open, End, Fire in Cario, How Beautiful You Are, Maybe Someday etc played, they were clueless. Didn't know the songs at all but at least they enjoyed the show.

Had decent seats on the 1st level, I was on Simon's Side of the stage and quite close to the stage. Has a great view since the people in front of us were all very short people. So I got some good pictures. Ah what an excellent night. I wish I could travel to all the NA shows. But I'm glad to at least be able to see the Chicago show. I was drained & exhausted at the end from all of the dancing, jumping & singing & screaming I was doing. The show almost 3 hours long! So I'll have to say Yes the wait from Sept was certainly worth it!  :smth023

One thing I really noticed is that this is a ROCK show, no doubts about it.  The dream-like quality that the keyboards brought is gone, and a powerful rawness has replaced it.  Great stuff.

I wasn't to far from the stage but being in the 1st level seats you can't get the best angle like you would on the floor...Stage lights & people heads got in the way!   A lot of my pictures that are not posted in the gallery came out quite blurry & distorted.  But I'm surprised I actually got some decent ones.

If anyone wants to see them all the good & very bad just checkout my photobucket page.

Thanks for the MANY photos.   :smth023  You were in row 17, right?  Curious how much zoom your camera has?

I was in row 17 for the Fairfax show, Row 13 for the Philly show.  This new camera only has a 4x optical, and I think it is 4x digital (my old camera was 10x optical, so I have been spoiled!).

Quoteby the way j, what camera were you using?
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35K 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.  I can take wide angle shots with it (16:9).  That's what the majority of the pics are.

Glad you like them DJscribbles!  :D  As I said before they are not that good as compared to what j took!  His are great!  :smth023  I was shooting in automatic not manual.  So I just had to accept what the camera did to get the best picture.  I should have took them in manual mode but I just got this new digital camera & I haven't learned how to use all of the features yet. I'm sure I could have done something to make them better if I know what to do.  Anyways, where I was sitting it was dark & even though I was close to the stage, it was still far enough away that when I used the zoom lens, it made the pictures distorted.  I'm no photographer, I'm just glad to get a few decent ones that night.

what did Mr Smith have against Philly that night.. No A Forest and no disintergration.  All other dates have had both or at least one or the other.

damnit!

No A Forest is quite rare, but I thought Philly was one of the more interesting shows so far.  Certainly the best encore with KMX3  :rocker

Yeah, I think it's the best setlist so far for North America.

Yeah, well, what can you say.  Best setlist for the best city  ;)

Of course, during the 96 tour, RS decided to wear a CCCP jersey in Philly rather than a Flyers jersey.  I have never understood that one :smth011

At least he wasn't wearing a Penguins sweater.

That's not a pleasant thought, especially right now given that the Pens are beating the flyers 3-1

Yes I agree!  We were quite lucky. Philly fans Rock!!! :D  I really think this show had the best set-list so far even without A Forest & Disintegration.  Actually it might have been the best show of the tour so far!  :smth023  I'm glad I was there for it!  :-D

Radio 104.5 interview backstage at this show. Interviewer not well informed though... Bolivia? The Cure barely played Argentina and Brazil by 2004 and didn't return to South America until 9 years later (and they did not play Bolivia!)
