The poll is self-explanatory.
I voted for The Same Deep Water As You. It's the only song by any band that can make me cry.
All cats are grey definitely...it's so f****** sad. Specially this "I never thought that I would find myself". I remembering listening it in the bad times. And indeed it makes you feel worst...like if you want to cry or hide...
Definitely one of the highlights of The Cure's career
:smth090
I never thought that I would find myself
In bed amongst the stones
The columns are all men
Begging to crush me
No shapes sail on the dark deep lakes
And no flags wave me home
In the caves
All cats are grey
In the caves
The textures coat my skin
In the death cell
A single note
Rings on and on and on
i vote for 'homesick'.
that's the cure song for me that's pouring out with sheer and pure sadness, in every way, both lyrically and musically.
and for me it's also loaded with some personal meaning from very long ago, that's all. it's a plunge...
"hey hey! just one more and i'll walk away all
the everything you win turns to nothing today
and i forget how to move when my mouth is this dry..."
it also has one of the most beautiful lines i think robert ever wrote:
"inspire in me the desire in me to never go home"
Quote from: Bloodflower on February 01, 2007, 02:45:06
The poll is self-explanatory.
i think there are 'sad songs' and 'songs about sad things' - and i think the latter one is one of the areas where the cure always excelled. and the range of those 'sad things' is very broad so... anyway, as we very well know people (critics...) used to say they were "miserable", maybe just because they missed seeing the difference between these two...
because it's completely on the contrary, they were always extremely nuanced and delicate in this matter!
but it's interesting, to observe the balance: for instance 'pictures of you'. it is a song about something very very sad: "if only i'd thought of the right words..." - needs no more explaining.
but musically it is just so full of the light. the light of the memory... so it is a radiant, almost shimmering song. but at the same time that's not a promise of anything, it's lyrically clear that it's without any real hope (of going back).
'out of this world' is a bit similar but more resigned, and the "subject is not as subjective" as in 'pictures of you'.
and they are others.
and just compare it with something like 'cold'.... or 'faith'.... or...
Saddest for me is missing from the list
my choice would be ... How Beautiful you are... from the Kiss Me album.
it gets to me everytime.
i voted for apart... just makes me sad... i have to think about sad times in my life in 1993... so... it's not a sad song but makes me think of that time!
actually for me...it's "The Same Deep Water As You"
very "touching"
Definitely "The Same Deep Water As You" ... I was a mess the first time I heard that song. On the Trilogy DVD, it actually looks and sounds like Robert is crying when he sings "Kiss Me Goodbye."
Absolutely "the same deep water as you"!
It's sad but beautiful...Robert's voice makes me shiver!
I voted for the same deep water as you: I've chosen it before reading the songs list of the poll...
Probably mint car.
Quote from: farquad92 on February 01, 2007, 23:47:50
Probably mint car.
 "the sun is up i'm so [shocked] that i could scream"...
I like Mint Car.....
But The Same Deep Water As You.... it just really is the most miserable song I've ever heard. It makes me so emotionally involved; just hearing it makes me feel terrible sadness. A lot of Cure songs can make me sad, but only The Same Deep Water As You can wreck me so thoroughly.
And I really wouldn't be surprised if Robert DID cry during The Same Deep Water As You. I sing along to most Cure songs at home, and even to me, someone who didn't write it, it can bring such emotion....
It's probably the most beautiful song ever written, the most powerful. It's probably my favourite Cure song, too. You all know how great that means it is.
Faith
"you fall in love with somebody else again tonight"
these people in the song are like images, unreal and changing. and love seems
like a mistake in the song, not the truth.
-bluewater
Faith, never fails to stir emotions, i was very close to voting Same Deep Water but this just beat it.
cold! so cold, dark, sad, .... :(
I Woted for:
The Last Day of Summer
It has to do with Roberts feeling of growing (too) old at that time.
It was perfect match!
Just like YOUR GOD IS FEAR was in 2004
heh, for the guy wondering and any others i was kidding when i said mint car that could well be their happiest song. i voted charlotte sometimes because of the music as much as the lyrics. could be cut here too. i havnt heard all cats are grey, dont have faith yet :smth011
Wow all the ones that i that i think are saddest arent even on the list.
My #1 saddest is definitely The Figurehead, followed closely by Disintegration and Bloodflowers... Howd you manage to forget those songs anyways!?
Plainsong, Closedown, Faith, and The Same Deep Water are good ones though

is it possible, not to have all cats or faith...??
If we're talking sad - in the dark way - I would have to say "Cold". Everything about that song is exactly what the title claims.
I would have voted for "Disintegration", but it's not on the list.
Quote from: airneck on February 02, 2007, 22:50:12
don't you think you have forgotten the saddest song over all...
I can't see it on the poll... :(
THE DROWNING MAN
I vote for the drowning man too... and a special mention to siamese twins... where are these songs in the poll ??? and what about begining a song/album with "it doesn't matter if we all die" ;)...
yes, lots of missing ones...
i suppose it would have been easier if the poll had been put together by first including ALL the cure songs and then just removing a couple of "slightly too happy" ones? ;)
And I intend to do just that, if I can find the time.
First off... YOU NEED TO GET FAITH RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Secondly, I decided that this poll is so difficult to vote for, it's like torture. There are so many sad songs that have leveled us all differently, and at different times. This is probably a harder question than "what's your favorite Cure song/album?" ... I still say "Same Deep Water As You", but "The Loudest Sound" and "Siamese Twins" are f*cking epicly sad as well. (Is epicly even a word???)
i voted faith.
never forget hearing the b-side version of charlotte sometimes the first time down in 1989.
so much emotion....
some deep water was very very close, but faith is my fav. sad cure song of all time
'Same deep water as you' for me
Cold, Drowning man, Last day of summer and Disintegration all came in second very close behind.
well
i see Cold as a DARK (very very dark) song but not as sad as "The Same Deep Water As You" i think it hasn't the sad atmosphere but has a sort of mournful atmosphere !
p.s.= Cold is one of my favourite song.

that's what i meant about 'sad songs' and 'songs about sad things' - because 'cold' isn't a sad song, and it isn't even a 'song about sad things'...
the same qualifies for songs like 'disintegration':
in my opinion there's nothing particularly "sad" in 'disintegration'. it's way too naked to be "sad". despite it's colorful word-imagery it still aims to be objective in a rather direct, naked way. it's someone spitting out some ugly unhappy things on you, a more or less merciless account of some unfortunate events, something that happened, something that was known to happen, that was unevitable...
"both of us knew how the end always is"
it's blatant, cold, cruel and definitely a description of a very unhappy situation, but that's is not the same as "sad"(?).
because are there really enough feelings of repentance and remorse in it, for it to qualify as "sad"?
what exactly does that song really make you feel and think? at least for me, the atmosphere is something completely different than that of sadness...
i think there are really much more flavours, colors, nuances to discuss in all of these songs, than just saying "these are sad songs"! :!:
I voted for The Same Deep Water As You.
But Faith is also one of the saddest master-pieces made by the cure.

okay you got me there, but still you cant sit there and tell me that The Figurehead isnt sad?
what i mean is that there's a kaleidoscope of wonderful multi-colored songs here and everything's stashed under 'sad'. don't get me wrong, i'm not against the poll - i think the poll is ok and it's actually quite nice. but people come and go and say 'i think this is the saddest' 'no I think this is' 'for me, i think it's this one' - so everyone clearly interprets it a bit differently. there are different aspects of sad there - because clearly there's a great variety of songs here!
so what i'm trying to say is that it would be interesting to hear a couple of more words about each choice there than just 'i think this is the saddest'. because there are reasons behind the choices right?
and 'the figurehead', is it sad? there's sadness in there for sure. but if one really thinks about it, is 'sad' it the foremost adjective that comes to mind, and is it really what the song is about? to be sad, being sad, etc.? what is it about, really?
hmm, i'd need to sit down and think! ;)
I agree completely. Obviously Faith is sad for much different reasons than Cut Here or Last Dance.
As for The Figurehead I think its sad in probably the truest and barest sense of the word its mostly about a complete sense of hopelessness, a total depression that there is no visible end to.
Musically, I think Breathe is a really sad song.
Winter sounds really sad too...
What do you think about "A chain of flowers"?
I find it very sad...
the figurehead, faith, this morning and the same deep water as you;
I can not believe "A Letter to Elise" is not listed and I can not believe I care enough to actually post this.

i voted for apart... just makes me sad... i have to think about sad times in my life in 1993... so... it's not a sad song but makes me think of that time!
Me too.
If i must say which song makes me more sad, then I think "The Figurehead" is my choice.
What makes it the saddest for me? The sorrowful lyrics of hopelessness and self-despair and musically the guitar-bass "confrontation", that refers to the inner contest of our selves between our "self-protection" and our "self-destruction".
"Someone will listen at least for a short while..." loneliness, hopelessness, appeal
"I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year..." despair, tragedy, living hell
Other possible saddest songs are "The funeral party", "The drowning man" and "Siamese twins"
The same deep water as you
i voted for this song, it's very very sad!!!
Also, *to wish impossible things, *apart, *going nowhere and *trust are so sad... in my opinion these songs are almost as sad as the same water as you.

Breathe too!
I think that WINTER isn't as sad as the others songs i wrote, but its a GREAT, GREAT, GREAAAAT song!!! incredible!!!
I'd say Bloodflowers, due to melody and lyrics both
I voted "other"
For me it's, "Bloodflowers"
"How Beautiful You Are" from Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me - it brings me back to an old flames memories..kinda smarts sometimes.
The Funeral Party gets my vote, the saddest but also my favourite ever Cure song  :)

here here
i voted for funeral party too
something about the line
'side by side in age and sadness'
makes me just overwhelmed
Apart is the song that depresses me each and every time i listen to it! And lyrics are not sad as the dub in the song is :|
the same deep water as you and treasure huhuhuhu
I can't just pick one. I have too many.
I'm in the same dilemma as Cure Freak...it's hard to choose just one, because where there's one sad song, there's always a sadder song I have yet to hear.
So many to choose from...
Today I will say "Untitled".
I was thinking Untitled aswell, But its just so beautiful,
I picked 'Pictures of you' the words always break my heart. :smth010 In the nicest way, relating to the words, and the timeless lost feeling, brings memories, that dont match the song, but I just love it..
For me it's so hard to choose one, because i love them all very much.
I've voted The Same Deep Water as You, because if i hear this song i :smth010
The words are sooooo beautiful.
I voted for Cut Here. It just kicks in in the quiet part in the middle....
Before Three might be quite sad for me in the future, because it'll bring back memories of all the firends i had.
~Siamese Twins~ + ~The figurehead~
there are a lot of sad songs :(
but for now, the saddest song is The Boy I Never Knew. I had to stop listening to it because I was crying too much

I think The same deep water as you because it was the first song ever to make me cry
I voted (other) the boy I never knew... is a sad and very emotional song that show us what Robert is feeling actually...
and treasure always is sad for me...
Couldn't pick just one unfortunately. There are many that stike the heart of me each time I listen but 2 that stand out are Disintegration and Anniversary. The words are very poignant personally and thats why they stand out for me. I was very disappointed when Disintegration was missed at the Melbourne show but in hindsight it may have been a good thing. It probably would,ve tipped me over the edge.
i agree billee.. it was emotional enuff without having my heart wrenched out.. :smth081
I voted for other. I am stuck between Sugar Girl and It Used to be Me.
I VOTE FOR ... OTHER AND THAT OTHER IS .... A CHAIN OF FLOWERS!!!!
Quote from: Darth_Blood on November 21, 2007, 20:39:33
I VOTE FOR ... OTHER AND THAT OTHER IS .... A CHAIN OF FLOWERS!!!!
Yeah I agree...a chain of flowers is dreadfully sad and melancholic...I cry when I listen to that, not just for lyrics or music, but 'cos it reminds me of old times, good things that are gone away, or people who passed away...that's what I think about when I listen to "a chain of flowers", for me it's the
essence of melancholy!
And I have to confess that sometimes I'm afraid of this song (although I like it),'cos it makes me think of how I'd feel if I lost someone I love...and it's a terrible sensation, so I have to stop listening to that! :?
ONE MORE TIME !
i voted for 'the same deep water as you'.
faith, all cats are grey, plainsong etc. oh man, beautiful yet sad songs. i love them all. robert smith is a true poet.
"A Chain of Flowers" is probably the saddest one. I find it hard not to cry when I listen to it. But there´s no lack of tearjerking songs in the Cure catalogue... I suppose that´s one of the main reasons why most of us consider ourselves fans, or am I wrong?
I must say that a few days ago, I was feeling so bad, terrible.... I don't know why I started to listen to Cure... It wasn't the best idea in that moment, cause I've started to cry so hard when Pictures of you started... It was one of those days when you have to blow out everything bad outside of your system that was collecting for some time...
But I can't decide for the saddest song... I guess it could be The same deep water as you...
I voted for The Same Deep Water As You :) when I heard for the first time this song I cried...
I figured The Same Deep Water As You would top the poll, so I chose Homesick instead. The piano is so utterly sad, yet beautiful. I also wanted to choose Lament because the title alone means to mourn. Just One Kiss is pretty "sad" as well.
somebody died for this
somebody died for just one kiss
There was a time when I always skipped over "To Wish Impossible Things" just because it made me so upset while listening to it. I guess that is the power of music for you.
I think "The same deep water.." it s also my fav song)
To me, the most sad and painful song is definitely Bloodflowers...
I vote Other ...
For me it is A BOY I NEVER KNEW
At the concert in Rotterdam, Robert was so emotional with this song, he was crying, I felt sorry for him, it hits me in my heart.
Other after this: The drowning men, The funeral party and Faith, ...

Wow, crying... what so hard :( I agree with you A Boy I Never Knew is the saddest; not only for the lyrics, is the saddest because is really sad for Rob; I attended the concert in Mexico 21/oct/07 when this song was played for the first time... was a magical moment!!! :smth023
what about the drowning man? Jupiter crash? underneath the stars?
I voted "other" for Bloodflowers. But... in different moods, other things become sadder.
I can't wait to hear A Boy I Never Knew.
A Chain of Flowers is also very sad. The Drowning Man... many, many, many...

Yeah, for instance, the fact that The Cure could never do a live version of 'Close to Me' that sounds as good as the studio version is kind of sad, in its own way... :-D
I voted for Other: Disintegration
For me this sounds like the lowest and most sad pont in a life you can reach. But I think A Boy I Never Knew would be a good choice too...Now I think about it, there are so many sad songs or at least that look sad to me....Great topic this!
Cheers

Certainly adds strength to the sadness of the song.
Thats so hard because about 80% of the Cure's stuff is depressing for one reason or another. Bloodflowers probably because it always makes me depressed. The Figurehead makes me really sad too.
A Thousand Hours is the song that get to me the most. I've cried too many times to that tune... so beautiful.
And Breath.. so sad and beautiful I think.. makes me cry. When Robert sings "be like you used to be" Im shivering in mental pain.
Can mention veeery many songs..
Well.. so hard to just choose one "saddest".. but A Thousand Hours is saddest indeed, "for me".. in my subjective opinion.
This is a really hard question to answer, because so many of the songs that are "sad" I feel are actually quite uplifting i.e. it's nice to know that somebody else out there has felt the same way and written a gorgeous song about it. Some of their saddest, most bleakest tunes usually bring a smile to my face at the end of it.
Sinking is one that never fails to strike a chord in me, especially the In Orange version.
I'll go with The Funeral Party. Other songs that are high on the list.... The Figurehead (especially when the I can lose myself in Chinese art and American girls part comes in), Trust, Faith, Cold, A Thousand Hours.
Of those songs The Funeral Party, Trust and Cold has made me get tears in my eyes.
Voted Bare more over personal reasons. All Cats Are Gray also depresses me, it feels so empty, like being trapped in a white world alone.
Edit: lol, I need to give this way more thought, this questions gonna drive me nuts XD
Some songs to me are actually happy and very beautiful on the list.
Well Robert says A Boy I Never Knew is the saddest song so maybe the true saddest songs are really on a personal level.
Definitely The Same Deep Water As You.. and the most emotional is Faith..
:( and the most angry is Shiver And Shake.. :smth011
Just about every song on Bloodflowers is pretty sad.
Definitly LAST DANCE. There is a deep, deep strangeness in that song i never heard anywhere else and it's so sad, so unlikly sad (at least to me), i don't know...

I think that's the reason why I tend not to listen to is as much as the other albums, even though it is a favorite. It gets to me so easily. The Loudest Sound, Bloodflowers, Out of This World, The Last Day of Summer... all very beautiful.
Bare, Treasure, Home, Apart, All Cats are Grey, A Chain of Flowers, Siamese Twins, A Strange Day...
There was a time when I couldn't listen to The Exploding Boy without bursting into tears. It's not even a sad song, quite the opposite, which I always thought was a bit strange. But there it is. :-D

"Maybe Someday" is not sad. And "Watching me Fall" is not particularly sad, either (well, unless you are a really "compulsive" Christian or something and interpret it as a declaration of fall from grace with God, or something like that).
The Cure's saddest song?
You must be joking...
Most songs from the 'Black Trilogy' are...
Also from DiSi & BloodFlowers.
But if you will ask me for a b'side then it certainly is : 'Fear Of Ghosts'. . .
I find it strange that "The Same Deep Water as You" is winning the poll for saddest Cure song ever. I mean, the song ends with the following lines:
i will kiss you
i will kiss you
i will kiss you forever
on nights like this
i will kiss you
i will kiss you
and we shall be together...
Surely there are sadder things in this life than being with the one you love? :smth017

Well, I have always interpreted it as being hopeful... The sadness of the departure being compensated by the conviction that the two will be together again. The tears that this song evokes are tears of sadness but at the same time tears of joy... And I think that it's this two-sidedness or "ambiguity" that makes it particularly powerful.
Anyway, for me the saddest song would have to be one that speaks of a complete and irreversible loss... not sure if there is any Cure song that applies 100% here? Even "Chain of Flowers", which I chose for saddest song, speaks more of the fear of loss than of loss itself...

i will kiss you
and we shall be together...
Surely there are sadder things in this life than being with the one you love? :smth017
Yeah, but I've always thought it sounded like a dream: he will love her forever and will carry on being with her even if she won't be there anymore...so it will be like being together.
But of course this is just my interpretation...the music anyway is very sad
Well, I have always interpreted it as being hopeful... The sadness of the departure being compensated by the conviction that the two will be together again. The tears that this song evokes are tears of sadness but at the same time tears of joy... And I think that it's this two-sidedness or "ambiguity" that makes it particularly powerful.
Surely we can find ambiguity in many cure's songs...but the convinction of "being together again" can be interpretated as the reconciliation after the death (maybe I'm too pessimistic, ah! :-D). The last lines could be also a "memory" of the words that he said to his lover before being separated...anyway it's a very ambiguos situation!!

Well, if you BELIEVE that there can be a reconciliation AFTER death, then you're not pessimistic at all... Belief in life after death is optimism of the highest level. ;)

Well, it could be... But then, if you are clinging to the memory of those words and choose to end the song with them, there must be some kind of hope in you, no?

Ahah, sure...but I didn't mean pessimistic about what i believe; i meant pessimistic about what's the meaning of this song! ;)

I think that sometimes clinging to the memories helps....sometimes can be dangerous... ;)

I have to agree with you there... Well, perhaps we should not develop this line of thought, I have a feeling that we're already sliding a bit off-topic. :-D
For me it's The Drowning Man, it's just such a haunting song, musically and lyrically. That or The Figurehead, which is one of my favourite tracks, it's just so bleak.

Good choices! :smth023 Two of my favourite Cure songs ever.
I voted for Untitled but Apart is a close second...
The lyrics to Untitled perfectly describe losing someone and never being able to see them again. The music has a feeling of resignation from the opening to the end.
Apart is the saddest breakup song ever. Closedown and All Cats are Grey always get to me as well.
Robert's ability to evoke these types of emotions with his music and lyrics are unparalelled: resignation, regret, longing (usually for the past), despair and also hope through the bleakness.
Lament. Is there any other sad...?
Funeral Party almost immediately makes me sad... :smth090 but The Same deep water as you, and All cats are Grey both come pretty close. It really depends on the way you sing it, cause I heard one version of The same deep water as you, and it sounded like he couldn't even finish the song he was so choaked up.

Yes - good choice with Lament. This song always gets to me..the flexipop version adds to the feeling of desolation.

Absolutely. A more desperate cry of restrained anxiety is seldom heard in the history of rock as on that flexi version of Lament.
perhaps the saddest story. The Drowning Man.

There was a time when I always skipped over "To Wish Impossible Things" just because it made me so upset while listening to it. I guess that is the power of music for you.
I have been experiencing exactly the same thing with this song. Everytime I listen to it I wonder whether I can stay to the end or whether I will have to stop playing it because it's too much intensity
Apart. =(
Im gonna make a bold statement here and say that I have never found any of their tracks sad or depressing. The Cure always was and always will be a pop band. Even RS has stated that and he has written some of the best pure pop moments ever.
Im gonna take another slant on this question. Here in the UK, the term "sad" can also mean crap. You will probably flame me for saying this but if you know the cure, you will know this already-they have made some truely crap tracks in their career. They even made virtually a whole album of crap tracks-WMS anyone? Please!! KMKMKM could have been an outstanding single album but was made a double purely down to RS indugence. At least half of The Top is crap and in his "golden era" RS would have rejected most of the tracks.Young Americans, Just Say Yes, Mint Car.....god i could go on.
So i ask the question back to you all-what is The Cure's saddest song? For me it has to be Young Americans-i f'kin hate it!! ( and they do too!! )
i have to admit, i never really thought of same deep water as you as a particularly sad song in the sense of it being about heart break or loss. i always interpreted it more literally in that it is a statement to someone telling them that they are not alone in their despair, which to me is kind of a love song really. but that is just my take on it. for me the two songs that always come to mind in this category are untitled and a letter to elise. the first one is self explanatory, it is about a loss to powerful and heart wrenching to a person that they will never ever get over the pain. a letter to elise is probably not as obvious, but my take on the song is that it is dealing with two people in a relationship where one person is trying so desperately to make it work out, they want to be with that person very much but "elise" does not seem to feel the same way, or at least not as intensely. but for me the part that is the saddest is the utter futility in the realization of the end and the powerful description of the feeling of the person writing to elise. "i thought this time i'd keep all of my promises, but i let the dream go and the promises broke and the make believe ran out". then there is the utter despiration of the last lines "and every time i try, to pick it up, like falling sand as fast as i pick it up it runs away through my clutching hand" for me that is really sad. but for some reason, i am drawn to that song intensly "like a moth to a flame" which is another sad song btw. i guess there is no real answer to this question, which is what makes it fun!
A Letter to Elise is terribly sad. :(
'Pictures of You' too. 'Boys Don't Cry' is actually a very sad song. 'Just Like Heaven', 'Lovesong', 'Homesick', 'Disintegration' are all classics.
This is a very hard question actually......
Wow, very difficult question :smth002 it depends on how much a person is sensitive...personally I think that The same deep water as you and Faith are two of the saddest, but I can name without problems at least other 5 o 6 songs...

The saddest songs are on Faith. No wonder Bob was thinking on suicide about this time (I think he didn't think to arrive to his 25th birthday)
The Cure - The funeral party (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdvgXBsmcXw#)
Memories of childrens dreams
Lie lifeless
Fading
Lifeless
Hand in hand with fear and shadows
Crying at the funeral party
Sinking,
Saddest album is Pornography.
It has to be THE SAME DEEP WATER AS YOU !!! surely .... :smth023
It's a tricky question because the choice really depends on the mood and the way you read the lyrics etc... I agree with David that as a whole album "Faith" is probably the saddest one... I do get this thing though with "Last Day of Summer" that really makes me sort of soft and teary inside... I know it might sound cheesy, but when you think about this song it really is about your life passing by, things ...and emotions, and people dying... and about missing something you wish was still here...
Also I love this song because it has the sound of sea and waves in the background and the sea is the greatest love of my life :)
So there you go...
The only track which makes me weep again and again is The Last Day Of Summer.
The same effect occurs with Faith and Sinking after a certain time, i.e. that I haven't listened
to it for months or even years. That happens. Some songs are terribly sad and you have to
cry and with others you're feeling more uplifted, e.g. with This Morning or The Top. Not necessarily
'happy' songs.

and now is definitely the best possible time to listen to that track.. as a matter of fact I've been listening to it almost every day since the end of August... :/
I just pushed "Same Deep Water As You" into the #1 spot after being deadlocked with that almost-as-sad song "Other". It was a tough choice, but ultimately "Other" just isn't as sad ;)
No way I can declare their saddest song. I might be able to narrow it down to 10 or so.
Ha. But, the lyric that always struck me as saddest is this:
"And this is why I hate you
And how I understand
That no one ever knows or loves another
Or loves another"
The 'I miss you's in cut here always get me, too, but it's more about how Robert delivers them than anything else.
This also gutted me as a 16 year-old. Ha.
"and every time i try to pick it up
like falling sand
as fast as i pick it up
it runs away through my clutching hands"
There are so many others, if we really weighed them against each other. But, something about the way these lines were placed in the song, they way they were delivered, the accompanying music, and the remarkable storytelling involved, made these 3 particular moments stand out to me. They were the arrows that pierced the deepest.
I will add a new one, one that always makes me "feel"
A b-side called Descent.
Welcome to the forum, thanks for sharing your choice with us. :smth023
too difficult question.. too difficult because all these songs are very sad in their own way, they are all about very sad things ... for me it is "the same deep water as you", because lyrics of this song means a lot to me(you can see it in my signature haha) ... but I think if you want a really sad song, it's "all cats are grey", because its sound is just like heartbreaking.. and I think this is the saddest song if choose by musical accompaniment..
every time I hear this song, it seems to me that I'm at my own funeral ... exactly at my own, because I gave up ... tired and fell asleep forever.."all cats are grey" reminds me of my depression, the fatigue that I try to hide... this song really affects me with the sound, not the lyrics
(although, the same deep water as you also reminds me of my weakness and depression...christ, it's so hard to choose aaaAWAHaaaah!! )
