Choose your favourite song for this album and write down why do you think it's great :smth023
I really like "The Only One" :smth020I love it because its a fun upbeat song and the lyrics are awesome. I like how Robert plays around with his voice in the song :-D
For me Hungry Ghost and It's Over !!!
It's the worst album of The Cure
My favourite one is "Underneath the stars", somehow it reminds me Cocteau Twins for it's "dreamy" style. Then I love the simple guitars and lyrics in "The Hungry Ghost" (some people say the guitars remind "Want"). "The Only One" would come in third place.
For me Underneath the Stars, the song has what I love so much in Cure-music, works like magic :smth060 to me
I voted for The Hungry Ghost. This song has captivated me from the first time i heard it and it keeps doing it every time i listen to it
For me Switch! Great guitar work and best lyrics in this one...
Underneath the Stars. Also really liked Real Snow White and It's Over.
Underneath the Stars
I'm changing my vote to Real Snow White. UTS is a great song but I'm throwing the curveball
I'm beating this horse dead, but this album is so underrated
Just Underneath The Stars...I was blown away by this one...
Favorite? Underneath The Stars. Loved it from the first second. Well, maybe the 9th or 10th second, when it became clear what the feel of the song would be. The drums are kind of difficult to get past, not because they are played poorly, they are played magnificently. The best kinds of production are when the producer either gives all the pieces their own spaces, OR the producer gets everything all mixed together and everything is cohesive and balanced. Unfortunate but in this instance (and the whole album), all the parts are mixed together and cohesive EXCEPT for the drums. The drums are kind of hanging out in space like an astronaut on a tether. Considering his treatment by the fans and the drum techs on the road and studio engineers and producers, if JC comes out of this alive or without some sort of serious psychological debility (pay close attention on this last point...you realize he has already agreed to get married...that's a warning sign!) he will be one of the luckiest SOBs to ever live. I REALLY like the drum sound on this album, a bit Steve Albini-ish. If all the different sounds were recorded in the same manner and then the album mixed with that in mind, the album could have been one of the best by The Cure and one of the best produced albums maybe ever.
I quite like 'The Only One' as well. The tune itself is one of the great Cure tunes ever I'd say. The lyrics make me want to poke out my own eyeballs. Then stick the squishy bits down my own ear canals. Can't win 'em all.
You do have some great points but as you say, you can't win it all :)
Like Lemmy says...'you can't win 'em all...where would you put 'em?' and 'you can't have everything...there's no room'.
"The Scream." Claustrophobic perfection
01 The Scream (Forever-tribute, and again, somehow honest. "Something really isn't right...")
02 Freakshow (cool basses, groovy song)
03 Switch (speedy rock song, and it has some memorable lyrics. This is not a good song, but I haven't got any idea what i put in the 3th place :( 4:13 Nightmare :( )
01 The Scream
02 Freakshow
03 The Hungry Ghost
My favourite is 'The Scream', because it is very well written (both the music and the lyrics) and because it's the most intense song on the album. I usually go for the more intense stuff, even if sometimes there are exceptions (such as 'Close to Me' from the 'The Head on the Door' album)...
It's interesting to discover that 'The Scream' is a bit like a continuation of 'Three', 'Forever', 'All Mine' or 'Lost'. Not really a copy, but more like a progression based on a similar idea. And I think it is also interesting to find here some similarities with Siouxsie & The Banshees' first album (called 'The Scream', curiously enough).

This song is also similar to "Cut" from "Wish", as well the sequence on the album,
but I'm not sure. Well...nearly. ;)

Well, 'Cut' might have some similarities too, but I think that they're not as clear/obvious as the other ones mentioned. The thing with 'Cut', however - and this is more on a side note - is that it is so poorly arranged/produced on the 'Wish' album that it ruins the effect it might intend to have. The bass guitar has not enough presence, the guitars go on for too long with that pointless wah-wah noise, and on top of that RS sings/screams to the point of hysteria. It's simply not good. The previous version as played live on the 'Play Out' VHS video was clearly better (though the song was known as 'Away' back then). I actually agree that making the song faster and angrier could have been a good idea, it's just that the way they executed that idea was poor, in my opinion.
Hi My fav of 4:13 : Sleep When I'm Dead.....probably because it was from the era The Head on The Door 1985....
