Question: What is your favourite album by The Cure? Yeah, I realise I'm an ass for making you choose.
Option 1: Three Imaginary Boys
Option 2: Seventeen Seconds
Option 3: Faith
Option 4: Pornography
Option 5: Japanese Whispers
Option 6: The Top
Option 7: The Head on the Door
Option 8: Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Option 9: Disintegration
Option 10: Wish
Option 11: Wild Mood Swings
Option 12: Bloodflowers
Option 13: The Cure
I'm an ass, I know. But choose.
I say Pornography, because I think it's the perfect album. A vision of darkness unparalleled by all before or since.
But Disintegration... And Seventeen Seconds... And Faith... And Bloodflowers... And--
This is a good question to me, after all i´m not one of those religious fans
who take everything they make (except the latest album) as pieces of gold.
No this is a subjective question to me, and the answer changes every day. But the
answer is never the top or three imaginary boys or wild mood swings or some other
underrated album. It must be one of the overrated albums since if an album is overrated, i´m underrating it and have to check everytime i underrate a cure album what
the hell i´m thinking about when i say i underrate it. So the answer is, my favourite
cure album is the most overrated one, bloodflowers! and that´s also a cheer to the author of
this question. :smth023
I picked Disintegration... but it alternates between that and Pornography (and also Bloodflowers).
I choose The Head on The Door. It has the best Cure song, "Push", plus jewels like A Night like this and Sinking. :smth023
Mmm...I find very difficult to make this choice...anyway I choose "disintegration", but there are also "kiss me", "pornography", "wish", "the head on the door"...
i picked pornography but the head on the door is probably on par
My choice of "Best Album" literally changes more frequently than my socks do (hurray for sandals!), and it's always between Pornography and Disintegration. I love Bloodflowers, I think it's probably my third-favourite today, but the highs on that album (Out of this World, Watching Me Fall, The Last Day of Summer, Bloodflowers) just never compared to the almighty highs of Disintegration (Disintegration, Plainsong, Pictures of You, Closedown, THE SAME DEEP WATER AS YOU, and Untitled) and Pornography (literally every song).
Of course, Bloodflowers is also without the lows of Disintegration (Lovesong, sometimes Lullaby). If Lovesong (and sometimes Lullaby) was replaced with Fear of Ghosts, the band would have made my decision much harder. But both songs are too playful (despite the fact that I can interpret Lovesong as heartbreaking), never quite happy, but definitely out-of-place. Before I go any further, it needs to be said that I love both songs. I just don't think they fit on Disintegration. I realise that that was an artistic decision by Robert, but I disagree with him. I think Lullaby, Lovesong, and 2 Late should have been singles, all three non-album.
I can hardly find good things to say about Three Imaginary Boys. The title track, Fire in Cairo, 10.15, and It's Not You should have remained, while everything else was dropped, and Killing an Arab, Boys Don't Cry, and Jumping Someone Else's Train were added. It would have made a very strong EP.
Seventeen Seconds has songs like "Three" and "A Reflection" and "The Final Sound", which I rate as lower than the other songs on the album, but I don't skip over them, because they fit.
If Faith didn't have Doubt, I would love it more. If Faith replaced doubt with Charlotte Sometimes (and that's what I do when I make playlists), it would have been one of the godliest albums of all time. Between All Cats Are Grey (10), The Funeral Party (10), The Drowning Man (10), and Faith (10), it's incredible.
The Top is a great album. It's perfect for what it is. It doesn't have the highs of Disintegration or Pornography or The Head on the Door or Kiss Me or Faith or Seventeen Seconds, but it does exactly what it should. "Please come back... all of you..."
The Head on the Door is a great album. If Screw was replaced by The Exploding Boy, or perhaps just put in a different place on the album, I would respect it more.
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is a great album. If it dropped Fight and Hey You!!! and inserted A Chain of Flowers (and perhaps To the Sky), it would have been better. Oh, and How Beautiful You Are... should have been released as a single too.
Wish and Wild Mood Swings are both plagued by track listing. Fantastic b-sides like This Twilight Garden and The Big Hand would have greatly improved Wish, while Wendy Time dragged it down (though I like that song more now than I used to!).
Fantastic b-sides like It Used to be Me, Ocean, and Adonais could have been added to Wild Mood Swings (deleting nothing, because I've always felt it was that kind of album) to make it one of the best in their catalogue. A Pink Dream could have been a single, non-album or not.
I've already talked about Bloodflowers, so I'll go on to the American nu-metal The Cure.
Lost: A lot of people dislike this song, talking about how pathetic it is for a forty-something man to wail "I can't find myself." Jesus, people, this is the kind of thing he's been saying since the eighties. What do you want him to sing? "I've found myself and therefore having nothing to sing, feel free to press 'skip'"? I like Lost. I like all three singles a lot, and Taking Off is very much 1987. I love it. Anniversary is a quality track. So is The Promise, and Going Nowhere too. Before Three is good too. If you add the b-sides and "All of this" (the song Robert co-wrote/sang with blink-182), you've got a great album. It's track selection that kills our dear Cure.
I expect that there will be, just like with KMKMKM, a number of throw-away tracks on this next album. But I also think, just like with KMKMKM, there will also be some excellent tracks. This could be their return to form, or it could be The Cure Part II. I'm hoping for the former.
Faith. It sounds exactly how the cover looks, from beginning to end.
It was a tough choice, since all of my favorite Cure albums share the same spot.
I voted for Disintegration, but I had a doubt with Pornography...
I voted for Wish, but I enjoy all eras of The Cure...
pornography!!!! the best album ever! :rocker
Bloodflowers has very strong, sometimes even frightening lyrics. It is very dark record, i think lyrically almost as dark as pornography. Disintegration is positive, frightening and strong when it goes against love- the most basic human feeling. It really is _dis_integration and not integration lyric- wise. Bloodflowers still throws in some themes about love and everlasting love but the lyrics always stand against usual religious definitions for eternity and love. So it is a pessimistic and negativist record. But disintegration has positive lyrics although it tries to break up everything in the relation between two people in love. I think pornography really is their best record if "the best" is not wise, but doomy and pessimistic. Somepeople like it always, but with me it depends on the mood.
i thought it would be hard to make a pick but maybe not after all.
disintegration - just because for me it's about certain time and place and most of all about a state of mind.
and musically speaking it's not just the songs but the sound itself.
(and it even sports maybe the best album cover ever 8))
Disintegration is definitely my favourite followed closely by Pornography and Bloodflowers.
..... :smth017 ...... Faith .... Pornography .... Seventeen second .... THE TRILOGY .... Disintegration .... Wish ....
I vote for 'Faith'. I'm fascinated by this album, the atmosphear. When I've discovered this album, it has been very strong. I love to go out for a walk when it's foggy and cold and listened to 'Faith' while walking...it's perfect ! :D Of course, some others albums can be close to this one as 'favourite' ('Disintegration', 'Seventeen seconds'...), but 'Faith' has a 'special place'... ! ;)
I voting for Pornography!
for me is the best album! :rocker
that was HARD to choose, but i finally voted for Disintegration (followed by Bloodflowers and Pornography)
their album are all GREAT (included WMS).
blooddflowers now runs the head and pornography really close for me, it's fantastic. in my opinion a better atmospheric album than disintegration
For me the best album its Seventeen seconds because is the darkest ,i like Faith, pornography, the head on the door and kiss me kiss me kiss me .until the desintegration i like all ,but seventeen seconds is the best. i know you all disegree.
But i'm 34 and the first album i ever heard was seventeen seconds i was 8, thats wy i like it and the first ulbum i buy was the head on the door thats wy its my second choice. ;)

I like the head on the door as well. good choice
It's a hard choice between the three: Disintegration, Pornography and Bloodflowers. But I choose Disintegration. Reminds me of childhood :smth020
Pornography...The Cure at it's darkest and best
it changes all the time
currently its pornography, so i voted for that
but right up there was disintegration (it was the first album of theirs i ever really absorbed myself in), head on the door, faith, kiss me... ok well maybe all of them ;)
its too hard chosing
I voted for BF because it's so damn good and means to me a lot :rocker :smth020 But Disintegration and the Top really want to take its place in my heart lately :smth020
"Bloodflowers" is an equation of the senses that Einstein and Freud would be proud of...
Incredible voice + Awesome music + Genuine feeling
-------------------------------------------------------- = "Bloodflowers"
this is probably the gayest thing I've ever posted, but I'm tired as hell and want to go home...

What was so gay about that? It sounded fine to me.

Exactly what i was thinking.......
Although people now seem to use the word 'gay' to describe things they dont like.
Strange world we live in.....
My favourite record by them right now is Disintegration, mainly because i just watched Trilogy again 8)...... close second is Bloodflowers
...as i thought about what i had posted last night, i do want to apologize as i maybe did use the word "gay" in a negative form. this website is awesome as are all of its members. it's the one thing that makes me come back to it here at work on crappy ass dayz...i seem to get them alot lately...hahaha i promise to choose my words more carefully next time i vent.... :D
Robert & the boyzzz are going to kick major ass in Chi-town on Sept 29th. it's my Buddy's B-day and we're heading up there with our significant others. Tix, Hotel room, and a nice bottle of absinthe that should be arriving here in the next couple of days. i think we're all set.
thanks for being great people understanding my ignorance.
I voted for Disintegration, but Pornography is a close second. Actually Pornography is more innovative and original, but I find Disintegration more complete and able to fit a wider range of feelings. Pornography is practically perfect, but I need to be in a certain mood to listen to it, whereas I find myself picking up Disintegration much more often. Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Wish complete the list of the best albums of theirs, in my opinion.
As far as the worst are concerned... WMS, Bloodflowers and The Cure, without any doubts.
Today it's Faith, usually it's that one, Pornography or Disintegration.
Faith, Pornography, Seventeen Seconds, Three Imaginary Boys, The Top, Head On The Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, Join The Dots (I love their demos, some of them are better than the album songs...IMO)
I voted for Dis. because IMO it is perfection. :D :rocker When the album came out I was experiencing my first "loves" and "heartbreaks" :( and depression. However, porn. is second , then head or Kiss me. Dis. for me is still powerful for me esp. songs like closedown. I remember when I was 16 thinking if I ever experience THAT I am outta there (the relationship) but realise 16 yrs later that it is a phase/cycle of relatioship not an ending. Not sure if this makes any sense. I still love the visuals I get from last dance . I guess the album has matured with me. I just love it beginning to end. Oh and I have to mention I love the "waves" of guitar and bass and keyboards absolutely beautiful :smth023.
I had a tough time between two, Wish and Faith. One of them has a bit more good songs. (Disintegration-6 Wish-4) but The other has the better majproty of singles (Disintegration-1/2 Wish-2/3)
The reason why I picked Wish was because 1. It's better music to fit my mood. 2. Its better music to drive to and 3. I had a feeling Disintegration got so many votes, it wouldnt need any help (looks like i was right)
mY FAVOURITE ALBUM IS CONCERT THE CURE LIVE ( I HAVE IT ON VINYL) , THEN JAPANESE WHISPERS, dISINTEGRATION, kISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME THEN BOYS DON'T CRY :rocker
~Disintegration~ and ~Wish~ are also favourites but ~Pornography~ will always be my first choice :rocker
Wild Mood Swings, ahh..Jupiter Crash, The 13th, This Is A Lie and Strange Attraction...I just love it.
Plus, all of the other amazing tracks on that album.
then Kiss Me and Wish.
It's really hard to pick a favorite since I really love them all for one reason or another. But I'll have to go with Disintegration as my favorite. It's got lots of deep, dark emotions and I love to listen to it on a cold, rainy night when I feel alone and unsure of myself. It's The Cure's Masterpiece for me! Never grow tired of the songs nor the feelings it stirs up. :smth023
Head on the Door comes in a close 2nd since it was the 1st album I got. It's not the 1st one I heard but the one that made me a Cure Fan!
Best and Favorite are too different things. The best measures the balance and composition of an album, its potential for broad appeal, etc. The best is the album you would recommend to someone else. It is usually a constant thing and based upon metrics which others can agree upon. Favorite is purely down to personal opinion about what you want to listen to. It changes from time to time and you are well aware that your favorite may not be shared with many others. You can't be wrong about what your favorite is.
For me the favorite is Faith, whilst I think Disintegration is the best.
KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME, OF COURSE!!! That's an easy question!
FAITH, definitely! Simple and sparse, yet gloomy and atmospheric. All tracks are killers on this album. Disintegration 2nd, by the way...
The Head On The Door. The only song that I don't care for on it is Six Different Ways; I love every other song on it to pieces.
I picked Pornography, but it wasn't easy. In general I don't really have a favourite album because they're all so different and I like them for different reasons, but Pornography does have something special, for me. I don't really think I've heard a band plough a furrow through despair and nihilism quite as severely as they did on that album, not even Joy Division came close.
But saying that, I love Faith for it's haunting simplicity; The Head on the Door for reminding me of my childhood and the 80s; Bloodflowers for proving they've still got it....etc etc
Wish was my introduction to The Cure back in the mid to late 90's. I was 14 I think. I used to come home from school and listen to it while I slept and then way into the night as I drew or painted with red candles everywhere. So I guess I'm biased because it was my first Cure album and automatically recalls atmospheric memories for me. But I loooove Disintegration as well. Then Wild Mood Swings. Blah...they're all good!!!
FAITH ... from the first second until the last ...
Disintegration. The best album ever made :smth023
My favourite one is The Top, but when it comes to their best album I tend to Faith.
Quote from: devoblueBest and Favorite are too different things.
I cannot pick...gun to the head, I'd probably say pornograhy, but the other albums, they remind me of specific people.
Disintegration is Jack, for us swimming in the same deep water, he made me learn the words one night before we met, so I could sing them to him afterwards... and for Mick, pictures of you...kiddo belting out prayers for the rain and dissecting every instrument within it...
Head on the Door for push, for smearing strawberries across the walls of the living room...
The top, kiddo singing to me dressing up, dressing up, in the car...
Blood flowers for my mum, last day of summer, in Cuba, on the balcony smoking Bolivar numero tres ...
Faith... all cats are grey, waking me up as my alarm every morning... Faith, so those moments when faith escapes you...
Chain of flowers from B sides, for all the days I spent wandering around the necropolis...
But...figurehead...for endlessly haunting me...and turning into abject reality...
No. I can't choose. It's too hard. I won't choose...
A very unwise man once said..."Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons." Couldn't have put it better myself.
I'm attached to Seventeen Seconds, it's the first Cure album I've ever listened to and immediately loved it for its darkness and gloominess...That coldness and sense of mistery really captured me. This record perfectly speaks to my younger self. I know that it is not the best Cure album nor their most popular one, but maybe I love it also for these reasons. It marks a sort of Cure's coming of age, I think (and mine too). Of course I'm a fan of their playful side as well and in fact my second favorite album from them is probably KmKmKm...I love many songs that are on this record, especially The Perfect Girl (my nickname was inspired by its lines, i love this song so freaking much), Hot Hot Hot (funky!) and Why Can't I Be You? (makes me want to dance everytime I listen to it)
