*edit2:  this will look like lossy (should you check the spectrum) because it is lossy. like many digital radio/tv channels today, unfortunately sirius XM broadcasts only compressed streams.
anyway the flac version will be better quality that any mp3s compressed from this (which would be double lossy).

i haven't listened to either mp3 or flac version for the cure show, but i've listened to some of the sirius broadcast stream and it sounds really low quality. very compressed, very artifacted sound. muffled too, in an odd way. i've tried to figure out if it's because of the way i'm receiving it (via computer) but shouldn't be so. it simply is a low quality stream.
by the way they just played 'hot hot hot' over there (which offered a good comparison as one knows how it should sound like), and it sounded like some distorted 12th gen tape copy or something.
:(

just like with the myspace show, i'm just glad we have good audience sources for these shows. i much rather listen to an audience source, even if there are people whooping and chatting, than these compressed flat and lifeless FM/MX sources of today.

(it's also kind of funny how only a few years ago there were people here talking against audience sources, saying that only FM/MX sources should be shared in flac because only those are good enough to "deserve" lossless distribution. i wonder what those same people would say now, listening to these crappy FMs/MXs of today...)

yeah heh. maybe they wouldn't even want to try separating the quality of performance from the quality of the broadcast, stubborn as they are. ;)

but just comparing the sound quality of this broadcast to the quality of the FM broadcasts from 2000 - well, it's just shocking, the way the quality of broadcasts has gone down the toilet.

(and some people get aggravated because i/we **** and moan - well, what else can you do here? what annoys me is that its as if the companies/providers/etc. behind all these broadcasts were considering the paying customers so stupid that just about anything goes. if they started serving people food that was as crappy as this broadcast is, they'd be riots. it's the calculative attitude there that annoys me, the thinking that "ok it sounds pretty shite but it's good enough for you". but that's not the band's fault and i think it's great that they do release soundboards fro complete shows. that's a bonus.
but in all, the cure is a marvellous band and in reality they do sound great live, so fans/listeners would deserve better than this!)

And the broadcast was mono? I think the sound could be enhanced a little if it was stereo...

it wasn't mono, it was just so poor quality broadcast, the sound having no normal stereo "spaciousness" that it sounded almost like mono. like as if you were listening the sound through a narrow tube or something.
i really don't think there's much you could do, to enhance it. it was so messy and artifacted -or  maybe you could enhance it a bit but it would still be poor and artifacted in the end that it would be mostly just a waste of one's time.

now, if only someone someday somewhere would leak a pre-FM for this....

I still have yet to download any of these sources, as I suspect people with different equipment combinations may have different results. For example, I've also heard that XM transmissions tend to be better than those of Sirius. Don't know if that's true, though.

So I know there's the AndytheCurefan version, which is pretty iffy (no fault to him), and I also see a "Pussycat" version on COF.  Despite whether it's in mp3 or not, does anyone know how it compares?  I really don't feel like downloading each and every version, especially when it involves dealing with things like Rapidshare.

Also, I think some other people have recorded this too — so can anyone provide a definitive answer to what's the best one available thus far?

Thanks.

The stream that you get with the free trial is only 32kbps, isn't it?  Recording off the air, or via DirecTV should warrent a better sound.

I've just downloaded Pussycat's version an immediately deleted it after gving it a short listen 'cos it sounds like a minor bitrate version (32 kbps? Sirius XM free trial mentioned by rodney?) reencoded to 128... I think that up to now, the best version available is Andy's flac set.
