From my Cure anomaly upload archive, the earliest extant live performance and very early version of A Forest, from Birmingham Uni, England, on 28th November 1979. The lyrics (as far as they exist!) seem improvised.

In the same vein, the first ever performance of Play For Today on the first night supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees on the Join Hands tour, 29th August 1979 at the Stateside Centre, Bournemouth, England. Pretty much the same early lyrics as the later 1979 early versions, but much slower. Liking the introduction from Robert: "...we've never done it before, so don't throw things..."

I've always loved the way that throughout their early 80s live shows they developed new songs live. A very punk thing to do I guess, plus the fact they were almost always touring back then, making it almost a necessity. Either way it's left a great legacy to explore for curious Cure obsessives like myself!

More to come...

  The way you put this... :cool

Standard Beatles protocol around lyrics seemed to be, "Whenever you can't think of anything else, just sing yeah yeah yeah."
