the cure on stage again!!!
24.3.2007 - Ultra Music festival, Miami
www.thecure.com (http://www.thecure.com)
I hope this is the real date Mr Smith !!!
Thanks for the info monghi :smth023
Well, it's a start and I'm thinking of going. Although, 90 minutes of The Cure doing pop songs isn't really worth the airfare. Hopefully they'll be doing some other shows while in the states.
ALL I KNOW...
11/12/2006 4:35:34 PM - by CURE:ROBERT
IS THIS
WE WILL HAVE FINISHED THE NEW RECORD BY THE TIME WE DO THIS ULTRA FESTIVAL... (I HOPE!)
THIS MIAMI SHOW WILL BE OUR FIRST SHOW OF THE YEAR - BUT NOT OUR LAST...
I NOT SURE HOW LONG WE WILL GET TO PLAY - MORE THAN 90 MINUTES I HOPE... IT COULD BE 2 HOURS... WE ARE YET TO SORT THIS OUT...
HOWEVER: I AM PRETTY SURE OUR SET WILL REFLECT THE FACT THAT WE ARE AT A DANCE FESTIVAL...
WE ARE STILL DECIDING WHAT TO DO AFTER IT - WHERE TO PLAY AND WHEN - AND AS SOON AS WE HAVE FINALISED OUR PLANS I WILL BE SURE TO POST THE BIG PICTURE SCHEDULE HERE FIRST...
AND THAT IS ALL I KNOW
PS
11/12/2006 4:38:02 PM - by CURE:ROBERT
AND BEFORE ANYONE PUTS 2 AND 2 TOGETHER AND COMES UP WITH 4 (?)...
OUR NEW RECORD IS NOT A DANCE RECORD!
WELL NOT ANY KIND OF DANCE I KNOW...
AFTERSHOCK...
11/13/2006 7:51:55 AM - by CURE:ROBERT
WE ARE NOT PLANNING ON MIAMI BEING OUR ONLY SHOW OF 2007!
AS EVER WE NEED TO DECIDE WHERE WE WANT TO GO AND WHEN... ONCE WE SIGNAL OUR INTENTION TO PLAY WE GET OVERWHELMED BY OFFERS - OF ALL KINDS! - AND WE THEN HAVE TO SORT THROUGH AND AGREE ON A COHERENT PLAN... LIKE DO WE PLAY CURE SHOWS - INSIDE OR OUT? - OR DO WE DO ANOTHER CURIOSA STYLE THING - WITH WHO? - OR DO WE PLAY FESTIVALS... AND DO WE PLAY THE BIG SHOWS IN THE BIG CITIES OR...
WELL YOU GET THE IDEA
ANYWAY...
WHEN WE HAVE MORE OF AN IDEA I WILL POST AGAIN!
RSX
PS
IN ANSWER TO THE (FEW) RAISED ULTRA EYEBROWS: THE CURE HAS A LONG HISTORY WITH 'DANCE' MUSIC... OUR FIRST EXTENDED 12" MIXES HAPPENED IN 1981... AND OF COURSE 1990'S MIXED UP (AND MIXED UP 2? HA!)... AND THE MANY AND VARIED COLLABORATIONS... C'MON! WE CAN DANCE! (KIND OF... )

Yes. I hear that's one of the biggest electronic-music festivals in the world. So my question is: what's the Cure going to be there?...

You're right nausearockpig !!! this is the real question !!!
I'm considering it. It all depends on whether they play other US venues, although Miami on a Friday night is rather intriguing! If I do go (and I can get my rig in) I will be taping it....but only audio this time!
I know one guy that's going and will be taping it. He a restrictive trader, though. Anyone have any masters they haven't traded out just lying around? :D
I'm still toying with the idea of going. If I do attend I'll record it. Will I share it? Hmmm...anyone have any masters lying around? :P
Hey come on!...don't become like those f*cking-all this is just for me-collectors.
But I think you are just kidding, eh? :-D
Cheers

You make me afraid Brian :?
The date has been changed to the 23rd.
Possible "Dance" setlist:
The Figurehead
Splintered In Her Head
The Drowning Man
The Same Deep Water As You
.....
Well, you get the idea :-D
do you think they will play "Caterpillar" for example?
i dont know, but if we go on what Robert said about the setlist reflecting the fact its a dance festival id expect to see Lets Go To Bed and Why Cant I Be You?.....and maybe even The Walk.....who knows?
without keys i cant see them playing LGTB or the walk, it would be really hard to get by without them on these, however i think there is a small chance robert will play them (we can hope)
i would say they will play:
never enough
just like heaven
why cant i be you
hot hot hot!!!
inbetween days
a forest
play for today
lovecats
boys dont cry
the blood
friday im in love
amongst others.

Really? Because they've played it 6 times w/o keys.
10/08/2005 Lokeren
18/08/2005 Avenches
26/08/2005 Szeged
01/09/2005 Malakassa
03/09/2005 Istanbul
01/04/2006 London
And considering they played Plainsong sans keyboards, anything is possible.
I want to hear The Loudest Sound without keyboards, hell anything off Bloodflowers would rule, although the dance setlist couldnt really fit it.
My list of probable songs?:
Lullaby
Club America
Strange Attraction
Catch
Lovecats
Shake Dog Shake
Bananafishbones(haha not really, i wish though...)

yes they've even done plainsong. and come on, didn't people use to say just like heaven and play for today were "impossible" without keyboards? i don't think there's anything in lgtb or the walk that would really crave for a live keyboard player. these are really very simple songs. (and in case of a real emergency: ever heard of backing tapes?)
there are keyboards and there are "keyboards". what comes to bloodflowers material it could be considered to be somewhat different.
"just imagine the tape" :-D
sorry, my mistake.
if they started playig with a backing tape i really think i wouldnt go and see them.
it just really hard for me to imagine The Cure playing at any kind of dance festival, they will stick out like sore thumbs :?
Quote from: farquad92 on February 12, 2007, 18:09:30

i didn't mean they'd be miming the songs, i just meant they'd play the keyboard parts from tape.
(my poor english, sorry) - which they have of course been doing already, be it good or bad then....
anyway, i just meant having no live keyboards wouldn't probably stop them altogether from playing a "keyboard song"...
I just hope they do something DIFFERENT.
How about shock us all and have an all-keyboard setlist with NEW songs.?
But I don't expect that. :?
well,
that would be actually a great "surprise"....
it would means they still have the need of change and shock their fan :rocker :rocker
The weird thing is that they *could* do something like that â€" play a full set of original, electronic music. I think it would be awesome. :rocker
But I'm just afraid they'll play a "Galore" set or something pretty bland...
well i do think, it would be already great if they play something new....
but actually i think they'll play a sort of "Galore" set as you said !
probably something boring, i'm afraid...
although i'd also hope for something different, it's about time...
but well, "anything goes" - just no tambourines please. :smth100

so it has happened many many many times already...

I hope they'll come play the Santa Barbara Bowl again for the first time since 1987. I mean, if the new album is supposed to be like Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me in spirit, then.... Why not?

crowbi_wan, are you going to the show?. We definitely need a curefans.com member to inform us what's goin on!
Cheers
David.
I have been trying everything under the sun to go. I am only about 1200 miles from Miami, but the airfare has been obscenely expensive. Put it this way....I am going to San Fran from Philly in 2 weeks. My airfare was $218 total. Over the past 2 months, the cheapest airfare I have seen to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Tampa, etc is $300! The problem is that it is spring break in Florida right now, so the airfare is sky high.
I am not holding my breath, but if a last minute fare sale should pop up.....I already have the go-ahead from the boss (my wife) to go
I'm still not sure I can get the day time off from work. I should know in in the next couple of days, but it's not looking good. A last minute ticket is going to be pricey, but well worth it. This would certainly give me a chance to try out my new DSM-6S/L 8)
And this would give you the chance to hear the new songs live !!! :smth020

Probably things like Wrong Number/The Walk, it's been a while since they played them regulary.
maybe they do complet Mixed Up album with backing track, that would be suitable for such festival. ;)
and also easy job.
Q: What can we expect from The Cure's show at Ultra?
A: We want this Miami thing to be special, that won't be like anything else we've done, and probably won't be like anything we will do. So we're trying to create a two-hour show that reflects the fact that we're in Miami playing a dance festival. And we've hit kind of a wall, because we're unsure within the band whether we should try to reflect what [DJs] do onstage -- a dance set.

sweet theyre playing Bloodflowers tracks!
Seems a strange "dance" set to me. Unless it's remix versions?
Hard to describe....I think Jason has some drum track thing going and may be playing either a different set of drums or has them tuned differently. They definitely sounded different tonight. It also didn't help that the sound system there was crap...lots of crack and pops (not just for the Cure, but for everyone else). And I think Robert turned the mic off during the first encore- his lyrics cut out, he looked at the mic, then the lyrics came back.
I was a bit disappointed that:
a) No new material
b) Robert didn't come out with Junkie XL who played immediatley before the Cure
Four new songs... But the rest was rather predictable.
Wonder if some songs were played differently?
The first few definitely sounded different. I am beyond tone deaf, so I am worthless at this. Jason's drums sounded different. I thought I picked up on a slightly slower pace, maybe. And I did not recognize the big hand right away
Robert also commented after the big hand that it was the first time in 17 years they had played that song. Not necessarily true, but a long time nonetheless.
Oh, and during Hot Hot Hot, there were 2 adorable girls with rabbit ears on their head that were hopping around like rabbits singing Hop Hop Hop. I could not keep my eyes off of those 2 all night!
So was the crowd into them?
Not as much as usual. Especially during the end. Alot of people were frustrated that they kept coming out for encores.
And a definite differnce between US and European crowds fully manifested itself tonight. During Play For Today, crowds in Europe sing "Oh, oh, oh" at the beginning of the song. That is a rarity in the US, and definitely not tonight. A lot of people put their hands up during FTEOTDGS, though. Most poeple went nuts when Friday was played, Lullaby, Heaven, and Lovesong. No one around me seemed to know or even care about the big hand

Yep, it's definitely "ok" for me... But I know they could have done better. ;)
waaaayyyy too many easy singles, again...
but well, great that they switched 'signal to noise' over to 'the big hand'. that's surely one ray of light there.

and about the Encore 2
they usually do it...when the time is over and have 2/3 minutes.... they come back on stage and play it..because it's "short" :smth001
The Walk was good with Porl playing the keyboard parts on the guitar...as usual (although I still like them with a keyboard- Plainsong is not the same)

This is what I want to say
Out of this world and Pictures seemed like they had a track playing or something. Not really sure what was going on. It definitely sounded different....almost seemed like Robert was singing in a lower key or something.
Of course, as I mentioned previously, I am beyond tone deaf and wouldn't know my ass from a hole in a wall when it comes to this stuff. It is like asking a color blind person (which I am) to choose the blue shirt out of a series of 9 purple shirts and one blue one (I couldn't do it).
understood,
well... then ... let's wait for a bootleg :-D

yeah i don't want to sound like some shithead just complaining about it, but they could have picked some more surprises too.
of course not 'the same deep water' (yes i'm well aware it was a dance festival...). but i think they have decent material that's "poppy enough" and that they could sometimes use instead of some of the "easy singles" - if they simply wanted to.
about BDC, of course i don't know about the time limits at that point, whether or not they had just 2 mintues or more. but meant if they are going to do a one-song encore they could sometimes do something a bit more refreshing too.
for instance, i was talking to a friend ;) who suggested they could have gone out with something like 'doin' the unstuck' etc. - i think that's exactly what i meant. i'm sure the audiences could live without BDC sometimes, i would like to argue that it's something that "they just have to do because they always do it".
anyway, i'm not here to complain. just tried to throw in some thoughts... :smth001
yes :-D
no problem...
i just tried to explain my head about why they were playing the easy singles and BDC :smth001
hmm, anyway Doing The Unstuck is longer than Boys Don't Cry (theorically)
and then, you read, the audience went mad with Friday and etc etc... :smth001 they knew that was a "strange" audience... :-D
When they came out to play BDC, some people around me booed. By that time, new people had pushed their way towards the front to see Tiesto. They were the ones that were booing. RS said that they had time for one more right before they played BDC. They were scheduled to play until 9:30....and came out to do BDC at 10pm, so I assume that they really only had a couple minutes. What happened to the boys of old...the fiery ones that did the extended F Robert Palmer version of a Forest? :P :rocker
They could have done a 34 minute version of Forever and ended with F Tiesto, F House music!
That would have been something, but...
I thought The Cure were supposed to be the headline act = play last. :smth017

but years, years, years...
it's a mystery to me, why they even decided/agreed to play such a festival? :smth017
makes one feel bad, to hear about people booing. :(
I thought the same thing. Although I was a bit relieved to see they were playin earlier. I stood in the same spot from 5pm until they ended at 10:05. I couldn't have lasted much longer!
And the Ultra website said that headlining acts would be playing throughout they day. I guess Tiesto was a big draw, judging by the crowd reaction
i could've not last all that...
i don't like dance,house music at all
i cannot really listen to it for more than 2 minutes.....
Me neither. Luckily Miss Kitten only played about 15 minutes. She couldn't play any longer because the wind was blowing her records on the turntables. Junkie XL was tolerable only because he was dancing all around the stage while his Mac laptop played the music.....
And he sampled Siouxsie and New Order (I thought I heard the bass line of the Walk as well, but then again that is supposed ripped off from New Oreder, or so I've heard).
I'm out of here- I have a 3 hour drive to the Orlando airport for my flight home this afternoon. More tales of yore later....stay tuned boys and girls! You've been a great audience, don't forget to tip your waitresses.
in my opinion, perfect playlist! don´t remember it was a dance festival, so the playlist wasn´t generated for cure fans, but for "dance" nation... the most importat thing is that the band had a great time, they´re still like playing and still enjoying it... waiting for a bootleg! :)
Yeah, I couldn't have stomached a festival like that. I like people to actually play instruments on a stage. The setlist was pretty interesting though, in many ways, predictable for ANY US festival. A few surprises though. I'd have loved to have seen all of the dance folks when Out Of This World started.....
Out Of This World, Wrong Number, THE BIG HAND, WANT!!!! two of my favourites, never thought they'd play them.......
Setlist was ok, bit predictable on the singles part
I agree that Doing The Unstuck would have been great, im surprised they've not played it so far with this lineup......
Shame about the booing, maybe some people cant handle a bit of proper live music... ;)
and so...
no news about the new album....
hmm....
On DIME !!!!

hmm...
this is been... FAST :-D
maybe the only disappointing thing (to me, obviously) is the "absence" of new things and/or of news about the new stuff

I think "The Big Hand" pay alone the show. That's such an incredible song. Can't wait to hear the boot.

Actually, that one isn't 100% correct.
Was 99% correct ;)...We just missed Wrong number. And hey, we published this one just minutes after the concert :smth023

btw porl's got a cool guitar - it has some class, compared to robert's ugly (sorry) ultracure models.
Anyone got download the whole show from Dime?. My conexion is f**** slow. I can't download anything. It will be appreciated it ;)

Yeah, he should have stayed with the vintage guitars. I can't imagine why he switched. It's not like he needs the money or anything. :?

It was windy and hot....thus not a prime condition for perfect hair! Look at those pictures that Tof gave the link for- look at the one of the whole stage (when I pulled up the pics, it was the one on the first line, far right side). See that camera boom on the right? I was right next to the operator of that camera. The show was videotaped (I saw them swapping tapes in and out of the camera). The host of the festival said it was for broadcast....not sure where, when, or how.
TOF if you can share with us and upload :smth023
TA KINDLY !

greaat!! :rocker
can you upload it on rapidshare or savefile or another uploadsite like these?? (because megaupload is difficult to use in some places without a toolbar...)
There are 123 seeds at the moment, so it should be pretty fast going.....
oh, mon dieu...
1 no now stuff played (didnt Robert say they will play new stuff?)
2 bad to mediocre reviews on COF (only four of them for now, but none very positive)
3 crowd chants for next artist (tiesto? who to f*ck are tiesto?!)
4 keyboards sorely absent (why? isnt Porl skilled keyboardist?!)
5 I dont know what to think right now...
PS I
could somebody upload BIG HAND as a separate file?

From miamiherald.com (http://www.miamiherald.com/213/story/52253.html)
On Friday night at downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park, headlining band The Cure -- whose eclectic catalog of music is commonly described as post-punk, Gothic-tinged '80s rock -- proved it's still relevant with a solid two-hour show.
The group, led by frontman Robert Smith and his Halloween hairdo, drew thousands of techno-loving dance fans -- many of whom weren't born during The Cure's true heyday -- away from lively sets by some of the biggest DJs in the world.
Smith had hinted recently that the band might throw together a one-time, beat-heavy show to reflect its surroundings at Ultra. But The Cure instead opted to offer ''musical relief'' from dance with a traditional tour through its greatest hits, some mainstream, some obscure.
Through it all, Smith, in his mid-forties, was a striking figure, his inimitable voice nailing every note.
For the casual Cure fan, all the big hits were represented: a somewhat subdued Pictures Of You; a raw, jagged Fascination Street; a driving Lovesong; a manic Hot! Hot! Hot! (the closest to a true dance tune The Cure would get on this night); a bouncy Friday, I'm In Love; a wistful Just Like Heaven; and a jangly Boys Don't Cry.
But it was the surprise song choices that made the night extraordinary -- The Walk, Push, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, The Big Hand, Lullaby, In Between Days and A Forest. Curiously, many of The Cure's signature synth riffs were performed on lead guitar -- capably so, but still an odd omission from the band's overall sweeping sound.
Pictures Of You is fantastic.......
Robert's voice is GREAT...
and i like it, even though there are some keyboards part as backing tape (i think... i don't think Porl could play it when he is playing the guitar  )

adorable or not but i just freaking hate it when people (usually some "nice girls") decide it's so cool to sit on some poor guy's shoulders on shows: because nobody can't see shit behind them! and they always (always!) end up doing it right in front of me, even thought that was the only single person sitting on someone's shoulders in this or that show then it's always someone right two rows front of me and once again i can't see shit!
and i'm not even a short person, i'm past 175 cm, if that's what you were thinking... but still i can't see shit because some idiots always do this - i thought it was an eighties thing (i hoped!) but it seems like it's coming back to fashion or something...!
:smth096
that's annoying and strange behaviour for a The Cure concert..
stranger still was what i saw at the Brisbane 2000 show: There i was with my green hat towel hat that i lost at the show and my disposable camera [must look for those pics] three or four rows from the front [! it was ace by the way] and i look to my left and there's a girl on some guy's shoulders.. anyway, i look again and then out of nowhere she lifts her singlet up and shows Robert and Co. her breasts!!!
I thought two things:
1) what the fk? this isn't a metal show. why's she flashing the band? and
2) well you can probably guess what my second thought was.... :-D
Anyway Carnality aside, it struck me as very odd behaviour at that show... then again I've only seen the band once from the crowd [twice from allocated seating] so this could be normal behaviour I guess...
Nope, wasn't them. There were 2 girls on shoulders about 15 people in front of me. There were other girls right in front of me that kept throwing empty plastic beer bottles at them until they got the hint. once they got down, there was a loud cheer around us

great work from these bottle-throwing people, i love that! :smth023 death to all these shoulder-riding idiots! :smth077
(actually it's thankfully pretty much banned in many smaller festivals/venues at least out here, the security always singles them out pretty fast... i wonder how. ;))

I put my guitar down for many years following high school. Recently, well, a few years now I suppose, I've picked it back up. More so for therapeutic reasons if anything. My dreams of the big stage are long gone. A coffee house near where I live is about as big as it gets for me. Trashy metal chicks don't seem to hang out in coffee houses, though.
Ozzfest is coming Brian....your chance to regain your youthful dreams! :rocker :rocker :rocker
