this subject has been popping up here and there so i thought of putting up a thread of it is own for.
since not all of us can hop on the plane and get over to fuji rock festival to see the man himself, then we're going to need to find some substitutes, to kill our summer holidays etc......
so where are you going? paying a traditional visit to your good old favorite festival ground where you've been every year since the beginning of the times? or maybe checking out some new happening somewhere?
or maybe travelling somewhere a bit farther just to see something that you'd say is worth travelling for?
let us know - and moreover, give us recommendations (or warnings...) of any great band line-ups -- who knows if some of us would get an urge to get there, maybe we were already planning to spend some of our holidays somewhere in the neighborhood.
also, you can post some experiences from earlier years if you wish.
as far as i've decided, i'll be going over to here:
http://www.myspace.com/ankkarock
just to see NIN. the rest of the line-up for sunday there is pretty dreadful (for instance ' the ark' from sweden... uh-huh: they are the ones presenting sweden in the eurovision song contest this year... what was that?? eurovision song contest? well, ok....). so to be honest, it's going to be a looong day...
anyway, since it's a pretty small festival with mostly finnish bands only so my jaw really dropped when i heard that they got NIN. it's not a big festival even in terms of finnish summer festivals.
+ a good thing is that it's not very far from where i live.

By the way, have you seen the line up for the Sziget Festival in Budapest? 8)
now i have... oh, i see - some good bands in there too :smth023
i assume you'll be going there?
by the way, the 'hammerworld stage' makes me laugh though: they're have kiling joke and negative on the same stage....
negative: i mean didn't you say you really fancy that 'tokyo hotel' kind of "gothic glam rock for teenage girls" kind of hosers??
So far I'm set to attend the Sasquatch Music Festival (Day 2) http://www.sasquatchfestival.com/ (http://www.sasquatchfestival.com/) at The Gorge in George, WA.
Some bands I plan to see...and tape 8)
Beastie Boys
Interpol
Spoon
The Polyphonic Spree
Bad Brains
The Dandy Warhols
The Black Angels
Seattle has a yearly performing arts festival called Bumbershoot that takes over Labor Day weekend. This year's line-up is looking pretty weak and I'm not sure I'll be going. And I live 10 minutes from the site!
Ah, and I'm a finalist in a contest to win tickets to Lollapolooza. Not holding my breath to win this, but it sure would kick some serious ass :rocker

they seem to have "a couple of" decent bands there (pearl jam, iggy, interpol, muse...)
- wouldn't be total waste of time to go over, i guess...
so, good luck with the tickets!
so... my plans:
this year i start with the southside-festival www.southside.de (http://www.southside.de) in southern germany, then in my hometown st. gallen www.openairsg.ch (http://www.openairsg.ch), then i move to the paleo festival in nyon www.paleo.ch (http://www.paleo.ch) and to finish it all i will see NIN in konstanz at the rock am see!! www.rock-am-see.de (http://www.rock-am-see.de)
as ever, i wanna see as much as i can!! :smth023
i'm gonna c
placebo, waterboys, omd, juliette & the licks, inspiral carpets, madness & i'm still awaitin 4 new shows 2 show up =)
...and how about in 2008?
well, to be honest i don't even like going to festivals, i like it less and less the older i get: you are forced to watch all kinds of shitty bands, the good bands play short sets, the audience is mostly noisy, possibly very drunk and about 80% of it seems to have ADHD. etc etc.
anyway, i might seriosuly consider this:
http://www.ruisrock.fi/index_en.php
as they have porcupine tree and interpol listed. :smth023

ps. hehe you're just digging your own hole there as now you'll never get your hands on my masters from these shows from your favorite "gothic rock" (HA!) artists... :-D

If only MCR would be added to the bill I'd just have to join you for this festival. My life would then be complete :smth044
This year i'm going to Reading http://www.readingfestival.com/home/ and Glastonbury http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/ even though Jay-Z is one of the headliners :smth011
Im hoping to go to Benicassim http://www.fiberfib.com/ also, to see Siouxsie and some sun! :smth023
Monsters of rock june...in particular the Iron Maiden :smth020

oh crap: porcupine tree's on friday, interpol on sunday! nothing at all on saturday.
i wouldn't want to buy a three-day ticket because it's a rip-off (100 euros) but buying two tickets for two separate days is even more expensive.
aaaah this is why i hate festivals, really! (one of the reason i mean)

"beautiful" indeed. :)
the singer called us "ye bunch of f**king crazy badgers!!!". :P
i'm generally not into folk stuff but this was an amazing live band, i have to admit. a must see. i've rarely seen several thousand people going so absolutely nuts (in such a joyful way!) in a matter of seconds and staying up there for over an hour.

Just checking the european festival's for this summer. Line up in the Benicassim festival (specially) and the Werchter Festival is depressing IMO.

Roskilde has Pavement, but is not enough

In the other hand there's this indie/experimental festival in Poland, the "Off festival" I went last year. Line up (which is not complete) seems more interesting than all the festival above, not to mention the price ticket is very cheap in comparison:

true, the festival line-ups seem to be rather boring this summer. i've yet to find one that would have more than one or two bands worth to pay for.
oh well, at least that'll save some money if nothing else.
Unless some terrible event happen, I'm definitely going to the Off festival in Katowice, Poland. Lali Puna, The Fall and The Flaming Lips just confirmed their presence.
If anyone would like to attend please send me a private message. There's time ahead but would be nice to know who would like to join.
two similar topics merged.
of all the bigger festivals, werchter doesn't look too bad:
http://www.rockwerchter.be/en/lineup/index.aspx (http://www.rockwerchter.be/en/lineup/index.aspx)
although i've really no personal interest to attend such huge events anymore. but if i lived somewhere nearby i might consider that one.
btw the WGT festival in leipzig is always worth considering - a city festival with arena/club shows beats standing in the rain/mud all day anytime.
imo the line-up just looks pretty uninteresting so far this year:

I was just logging in to post about Werchter. Looks to be a solid lineup, though the middle dates are kind of blah for main acts. A Muse and Pearl Jam sandwich without much in the way of fixings. Editors and Rise Against are good, though. That's a festival I'd go to if I lived near there.
I got into the final round for a free trip to Bamboozle New Jersey: http://party.thebamboozle.com/profile/TheBamboozleNewJersey (http://party.thebamboozle.com/profile/TheBamboozleNewJersey) Hmmm, not sure I'd even go to the festival if i wind. Might just spend the time sightseeing instead. :P
Day 2 of Coachella looks pretty nice. Muse, Faith No More, Tiesto, The Dead Weather, Coheed and Cambria, Devo, The xx, Mew, Frightened Rabbit, Porcupine Tree, Temper Trap. I considered going, but didn't feel like spending the money to get there and back for just one day. Three Muse gigs in a few weeks, Tiesto the following week, Temper Trap on Monday, and having recently seen PT and Frightenend Rabbit will have to do.
Our big festival in Washington looks really weak. Some really uninteresting headliners that I would consider main stage support at some bigger festivals like Lollapalooza or Coachella.
And speaking of Lollapalloza, rumors are the headliners will be Green Day, Soundgarden, and Gaga. What a combination.
btw, I really prefer the arena, club-type atmosphere these city center festivals have, too. Seattle has a long running music and arts festival called Bumbershoot which takes place in the city center over labor day weekend. I'm actually hoping for a week lineup this year so I don't spend extra money the week prior to my London/Iceland trip.

I hope you had a nice day @ the off-festival :rocker
I went last week to the Lokeren Festival to see The Sisters of Mercy and saw Druide :)
Next week I go to Pukkelpop Festival to see Placebo!
Well, this year will be for me Heineken Jammin in Milan, Rock in Roma (because of The Cure) and OFF Festival in Katowice, Poland! It will be my fourth OFF Festival :)
If anyone wants to join, let me know! There will be Swans, Spectrum, The House Of Love and Mazzy Star. Best independent music Festival in central Europe if you ask me!

I am going to OFF Festival (Katowice) this weekend. Anyone is planning to go there? :)
