Title: Robert Smith says Porl asked to rejoin the band
Post by: Janko on July 12, 2007, 16:39:05
FROM THE CHANELNEWSASIA INTERVIEW:

Here comes The Cure
By Zul Othman
Posted: 10 July 2007

TWO THINGS I DIDNT KNOW:

ROBERT: "(We) had become slightly complacent perhaps towards each other and Ross tore that apart."

SO BEFORE THE RECORDING SESSIONS IN 2004 THE BAND WAS OK AND IT WAS ALL FINE BETWEEN THE MEMBERS?!

ROBERT: ""Porl's the real catalyst for us getting back together ... When he offered to rejoin, I thought it was too good an opportunity to pass up. We set aside our differences and two years on, we're hard at work."

SO, PORL ASKED TO REJOIN THE BAND?! AT THAT TIME I THOUGHT HE WAS SUMMONED A TEMPORARY HELP JUST FOR 2005 FESTIVALS...

SOME NEW FACTS I GUESS...

:-D

When Robert says "complacent", does he mean "fine"? I don't think so - to me it sounds more like "We had become a bunch of boring old farts and then RR came in and kicked our asses". I mean, look at the band's activities befor the TC sessions - the 2002/2003 shows (especially Trilogy) were pretty much history repeating, there was nothing new in them. Not that TC was a revolutionary album, but I think it shows a band much more alive than the one that recorded Bloodflowers.

I think what he means by the first statement is that the band were at a point where they didnt push themselves anymore, now theres tension in the group again , which is a good thing.... about the 'break-up', i read on Rogers website that had he not been pushed, he would've jumped.... so inevitably, something was going to happen there.

When you look at some of the bands performances from 2004, some of them are fairly standard and although they are still great and pretty flawless, theres kind of a sense that they were just going through the motions when playing the songs. I remember reading somewhere from Robert that the Curiosa tour was the most fun hes ever had, but he felt that sometimes the band didnt rise to the occasion onstage and im pretty certain hes referring to this.... that maybe a couple of people, or at least Roger didnt have their hearts in what they were doing anymore.

So who knows, in all that i dislike about Ross Robinson, for all i know he couldve been the thing that pushed the band further and made them look at how they approach these things and for each memeber, whether or not they 100% agree with and want to be involved in what the group's doing. If not then the decisions should be made.... we know the rest.

So really, id rather see this lineup giving it their all (mistakes and everything), than the last lineup playing the 'standard' set...... theres few bands out there that can sound totally different and brilliant live and pull it off better than the record - The Cure are one of them.

I REMEMBER WHEN ROBERT SAID THAT THAT LINE UP IS TEN YEARS OLD AND "DEAD GOOD" AND THAT HE ENJOYS PLAYING WITH THEM AND...

YOU KNOW, I REALLY THINK THE BREAK UP WAS A BIT FORCED AND ROBERT DID IT JUST TO MAKE A RADICAL CHANGE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS...

AND I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT ROBERT WANTED A TRIO AGAIN IN 2005! AND THAT TURNED UP TO BE UNTRUE...

:(

I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the man who wrote the Disintegration and Pornography albums.  He hasn't steered me wrong yet...

I also have high hopes for the man who was involved in all of the albums from 1985-1992 â€" which was right before everyone really started to complain about the band's decline.

That person is Porl. :rocker

WELL, IF 'WISH' WAS WEAKER ALBUM THAN 'DISINTEGRATION', "DECLINE" STARTED IN 1990...

:-D

I DONT THINK PORL COULD BRING SOMETHING REALLY MAJOR TO THE BAND
I THINK ROBERT IS MORE AT EASE WITH HIM ON BOARD
BUT THE CURE NEEDS SOMETHING REALLY, REALLY BIG TO KICK THEM FOR A BIT FURTHER
LIKE AS IN 1996 WHEN THEY HAD "WILD MOOD SWINGS" WHICH WAS A BIG CHANGE IN THE CURE'S SOUND AND STYLE ("13TH" COMES TO MIND, REALLY OUTTHERE!)
AND ROGER WAS REALLY HAPPY PLAYING STUFF LIKE "GONE"!

AH...

:rocker

I HOPE THEY'LL MAKE IT THIS TIME!

I've probably said this a million times, but I discovered the band during the Wish Tour. And I guess that will always be the perfect era of the band for me.

After 4 years catching up with the back catalog, Wild Mood Swings was a big slap in the face. I remember buying the 13th single when it came out before the album, and that was just crazy to hear. Then the whole album was just about as appalling when it came out...

I was somewhat familiar with the new lineup since my friend had sent me a tape of Glastonbury '95, but the sound (especially Mint Car) had changed so much by then. I hated it!!! :x

But I still forced myself to listen to the album all that summer, and it just kept growing on me. Yes, I'm still not really happy with the production/sound on it, but I've learned to look past it and still enjoy the songs.  There was a time, however, when I just thought the album was a huge disgrace. I remember people saying, "We need to burn this album and act like it never existed." I was in agreement at one point, but I don't think that anymore.

And say what you will about the album, but the tour supporting it was probably the best that lineup ever did. I also prefer many of the live WMS songs compared to their album counterparts.

But it was such a dramatic shift to go from Wish to WMS as a young fan. So I was just saying that maybe they'll be get a little bit closer to their "glory days" since Porl is in the band again.

We'll find out in time, I suppose.

Hey, I wouldn't complain if they replaced any of the "let's play this at every single show" pop songs with Mint Car. Well, I wouldn't complain if they completely retired those songs altogether. ;)

"WILD MOOD SWINGS" IS A GREAT ALBUM

WANT
GONE!
TREASURE

...

VERY DIVERSE
VERY UPLIFTING
VERY FRESH-SOUNDING
I LOVE IT!
I ALWAYS SAW "BLOODFLOWERS" AS A RETREAT TO SAFER AREA...

You've listed 3 songs from 14 Janko.
While, I have to concede that Want is alright (better live though)the rest is pish IMHO.
Club America (possibly the worst cure song ever)
This is a Lie
The 13th
Strange Attraction
Mint Car (sorry Caley)
Jupiter Crash (oh please :?)
Round & round & round ( I had to listen to that earlier, as I press the skip button every time it comes on &....yep. Still crap)
Gone

Look I can't be bothered to type the rest.
Dreadful lp, dreadful cover art, pretty shocking era for gigs too, but that's to be expected when trying to promote that thing.
This is just my opinion however & we are all entitled to that.
Many of you don't like Doubt for example.
I think Doubt is terrific.

In utter contrast with Steve, I think Wild Mood Swings is a great album!

I mean, come on:

Want (Fantastic opener)
The 13th (A totally out-there single!)
Mint Car ("I'm so happy I could burst!")
Gone! (Love this -- very jazzy, very odd!)
Jupiter Crash (Excellent song; "She follows me down to the sound of the sea....")
Round & Round & Round (It's grown on me!)
Numb (Who's never felt this way?)
Treasure (Love Robert, love Rosetti - wonderful)
Bare (My favourite of the session and one of my favourite Curesongs all-time. The soundtrack to a particularly difficult time in my life.)

And that's not even MENTIONING the b-sides, which are some of their best. I think WMS suffers from poor tracklisting -- Trap and Return made the cut, but Adonais, It Used To Be Me, Ocean, Home, and A Pink Dream didn't. You throw some b-sides on WMS and take out a couple of tracks and you've got an album close to Wish.

Now you might have something there BF.
But Wish was never the best either. But then how do you really follow Disintegration huh?
You're fully right about the tracklisting. In fact the whole lp comes accross as a "clear out sale" type of affair.
A bit more time & thought could have made it a whole lot better.
Now before this thread becomes totally(http://www.chs.org/graphcoll/images/1995_36_1304.jpg)
I'll leave it at that.

I'd really like to see Doing The Unstuck replace some of those old pop standards.  Porl really shines on this one.  The problem was that he was seldom in the mix and you really couldn't ever hear what the hell he was doing.  While it was very cool to hear The Big Hand from Miami I would've preferred Unstuck.  Want would be cool to get on the playlist every so often.  Same with Jupiter Crash, though that wouldn't really be anything special.  About the only other WMS track I'd like to hear live again is Numb.  That song wasn't played nearly enough.  Just a few weeks and all of the guessing will be put aside.  The tour is almost here.

I want to hear Bare live. There were a few shows during the Swing Tour where he changed his voice for the lines:

There are different ways to live (said in a really menacing voice)
Yeah I know that stuff (said in a quieter, softer voice)
Other ways to give (menacing)
Yeah, all that stuff.... (soft)

And I really loved that. It actually made me think about what The Cure would sound like with duets on a few songs -- a lot of them are dialogical enough; Bloodflowers, Bare....

And there's a great, powerful restart with the last movement of the song, much better than on WMS itself....

Anyway, I'd really love to hear it live....

Considering that we know at least one part of this interview was lifted from a 2006 article, I'd question believing most of it.
