Title: there's no business like shoe business
Post by: japanesebaby on September 22, 2007, 21:58:58
bono being discussed in one the hated artists thread and shoes on the 'what shoes are you wearing?' one reminded me of this:

looks like whatever it was that bono's wearing wasn't quite the top choice for that day in berlin.

Lol yeah, Bono is..eh, not cool. So you know how England and Ireland don't really get along n' stuff? Well the taxes in Ireland are really quite high, and England's are a little less, so he got his citizenship in England so he could make more money. Such an ***hole move on his part.

is that so? well now, i bet he was feeling like he could use some extra cash (i mean the man's got a family to feed there for chrissakes!) so it's quite understandable.
(ok hey what a greedy prick.)

yeah i bet they do.... even if they'd pay their taxes to both ireland and UK they'd still make enough to feed half of africa including all baboons porcupines and a couple of south african meerkat colonies.
so i was sort of trying to be sarcastic there you know.

For a man all about peace and freedom and justice, it's odd how he makes others put his shoes on for him...

A shame really, as that is probably my favorite U2 song, I'm not a U2 fan at all, but it has a Cure-esque beat and bassline...

LOLTolhurst for putting that up!!!

I think it's pathetic, that he can't even put on hs own shoes and to do it during a song. He could of waited, til the end of it.

I agree very disrespectful towards the audience,  aswell.   They didnt pay to watch a lazy b@stard get his shoes changed...

~I didnt realise in the 'other shoe'  topic-
that tof's shoes are the same one's Robert wore in the Melb concert- Now i want a pair too  :smth023

besides, anything with 'jesus' in it would be so fitting for him now wouldn't it? after all, he's supposed to be the guy sitting on god's right side on those days when jesus is kinda busy, right?

yes i think it very well displays his character: he actually wanted to make a show out of it because obviously he genuinely does think that anything and everything he does is the most goddamn amazing thing ever under the sun. so yeah, that's just so pathetic.
a mental comparison: can you imagine someone like robert ever doing the same? hell i can't even imagine him being so utterly stupid that he'd put on a wrong pair of shoes when going on stage - even if he was dead-drunk (as he sometimes used to be during live shows, have to admit that ) he wouldn't have done anything that monkey-ish. not to mention embarrassing everyone with some shoe-changing operation in the middle of 'the kiss'?  just think of it...

Bono is always so funny during u2's concerts...he often joke around these situations, always sweet with his fans and with the paparazzi, too!

Personal choice really,. Probably many things I like ~ that you dont Lady  :smth023
and thank god we are all different,

But to me ~ I just think Robert is so perfect, everything he does, I like other artists aswell - very different to Robert. No rights or wrongs, just opinions, Hope no offense taken, None meant.  :smth001

Yeh Cure Freak - I laughed thinking how pathetic the last clip was. - even youtube it has 'no ratings'- so not just a few that think it yuck.

Just my opinion and sense of humour.

i haven't been able to watch it through on one sitting either, not then and not now.
i find it so amazing that he (bono) obviously thinks he's very funny there - he's so fooled by the image of himself being something superhuman that he can't see his own stupidity...

it's always been the problem with that band: they've tried to be self-ironic several times over the years, like during later stages of zoo tv for instance. but it's just just been so embarrassing, every time... because seriously, one simply cannot achieve to be self-rionic if one's so full of himself at the same time! they cannot laugh at themselves because they take themselves so damn seriously. it's just "look at me am i just so funny oh yes i think i am oh it's so great to be me everybody behold!" - ok everyone knows that that's just utter bullshit.
i can't see anything funny in u2, not even if i really really try. you cjust an't both elevate yourself above other living creatures and make fun of yourself at the same time. it's a stillborn idea.

Ok but we can't think Robert is God and that everyone who doesn't make things as him is wrong...every artist has a different approach to his audience...

robert is God? certainly not! i'm the first one here to say that all that is just complete bullshit. i actually really dislike it when people need to worship their idols as persons, just like marvelling their art wasn't enough. i can't find anything godlike in robert (or in any other human either) and like i've said on this board before, i don't feel any need to idolize anyone outside their art.

and sure, every artist has a different approach and i'll allow them that of course. obviously there's something that people find attractive in u2, since so many like them. but personally i feel they work the same way as many charity organizations: they arvertize their mission and try to make people feel a bit guilty. and when people start feeling guilty they become vulnerable and they make donations. and after making a donation people feel done their part, they feel better about themselves - so what actually happens there is that people arebuying themselves a good conscience.
i alwasy see u2 as an equivalent of that in music: people support them and them they feel good about themselves because trhough this band they feel like they are participating in something and making the world a better place to be. ok don't get me wrong, i'm not saying it's all completely worthless, obviously there is some good in it too. but it's still so pompous and so empty, it's like the bought conscience after all.

anyway, about my comparison with robert once more: i surely didn't make it in order to try and prove how robert is some sort of messiah and role model in everything. because he's not (and besides, i could have picked some other artists there for comparison too, it didn't have to be robert. he was just a natural choice since this actually is a cure board hehe). so i just made the comparison to demonstrate how much more respect artists like robert have towards their audiences. they don't make people watch bullshit like that and think they are so great for it and insist that they just offered everyone something really unique! i mean christ, the first lesson of ANY performing artists is to respect his/her audience. you fail that and you fail everything. that's the truth, i dare to say.

**edit:

PS. i didn't start this thread to piss anyone off (i do know there are people here who like u2) or start any kind of useless "oh look how horrendous, now ROBERT would EVER do that, he's so great" crap either. so maybe my comparison with robert was not an idea well thought of. i'd also like to add that i've actually been a fan of u2 in the past years, i still like their early stuff. maybe that's why i also feel  that i can ruthlessly bash them too, if i see it fit. because i've followed their career over the years and seen them turning into a complete opposite of what i thought they originally stood for, what they originally represented - i think they lost themselves because they started love each other, their own image, too much. they used to be a VERY strong band, with a very storng message and sharp music. but all that got lost as they started to enjoy looking into the mirror.... and so today, yes i do think that was unforgivable and i do think it has ruined their music, their art. and believe me i feel bad about it because i turly used to like them! but they are too happy with themselves and so everything they do today is kind of pointless. it's been long since they was any "spark" in them, any such friction that originally made them begin and create music... for me they are just an empty image - and even though i sitll liek their early stuff, i find it hard to forgive them what they've become today.
anyway, i've no problems with someone liking them, not at all. :smth001 but personally i also do find it strange that SO many people are still so fond of them, that's all.

Embarassing??? ??

Bono (as Freddie Mercury) is the best performer ever, there's so many pathos at u2's concerts...
U2 have changed the concept of the live performance: not just music but something more, a real contact with their audience deeper...

Ok if you don't like this kind of artist, but you (generally) can't say he's stupid or something like this...please more respect for the leader of a band who wrote the music's history.

I don't Robert to be a God or anything ofthe sort. Or am I personaly bashing Bono.
But, in general, for an artist, an act like this is just showing disrespect to your audience and your fans. It's saying, to his audience, my ahoes are more important than you.

japanesebaby:  His attitude, over the last few years, has came across as "I'm bigger than God". He's become vain and somewhat self centered. And it's,also, being reflected on the band, as well.
And their die hardness of being funny, Christ, they need to give it up. They are no good at it. It's apparent in that video.

I used to like U2 in the 80s, but suddenly they became a stadium band and Bono changed to someone i didn't like (i still don't like) - i mean the sort of "I could save the world" or something like that.
They are pathetic. And the music isn't good it used to be.

I'm glad that Robert doesn't act like Bono. And i think that wouldn't Robert do anyway.
That doesn't fit to him, i think.

Robert isn't godlike or something like that and i wouldn't say that.
He does make mistakes like everybody else, is in bad mood etc.

Of course he is a wonderful and true artist, who want to do what he does 150 % .
Is an artist with body and soul.

I have made the god comment many times before, but it's just because I'm a goofball and I like to be dramatic! Who ever means that stuff literally? People say it all the time about Johnny Cash and John Lennon, that they are "gods" but nobody means it literally.

When I say Robert is god, I don't mean it literally at all. In fact, Robert is full of flaws that I wish he didn't have, such as drug addiction, alcoholism, etc... but what's more fun? To say, "Robert is cool but full of flaws" or "Robert is the god of post-punk?" I think the latter.

I'm sorry if that cheeses someone off, but that's the way I roll. When I like something alot, I put it high on a pedestal. Such as films I love, I practically worship them. But it's never a serious thing, it's just an extreme way of me expressing my love for something by considering it high and mighty, or godlike.

I find it very interesting though, How charm can get you alot, and Robert has alot of respect for us, and he always has.

But what i find interesting is the punk days, when the singer, whatever would stand on the stage and say something like "you are all f**ken idiots, c*nts, piss off" sort of thing., and the audience went mad for it, luved it.
I know girls can get away with that, its either amusing OR you feel respect for them - that they are a strong person.....or like to stand up and have balls or whatever..

But some guy bands are even like that now, I saw an episode of 'Judge Judy' one very v boring afternoon, and a band called "Skitzo" were being sued for vomitting on a girl in the audience....He reached he's hand out in a romantic fashion- she said(and that she had no idea what was going to happen) - then had an intense look and spewed all over her.....?  And apparently does/did it every show. . . Now thats just not charm, at all..... But maybe it would've worked in the punk days ???? ?  ewwwww !! I would've kicked him in the nuts

Either way still find Bono spew aswell. Dont like anyone so full of themselfs.
Once again the audience didnt pay to watch him change his shoes-And respect for your fans also goes a long way, Means alot to me anyway.  :smth020
