I know these "best of" lists are kind of trivial, but I also think they are good fun, and sometimes through them you get to know great "new" stuff you didn't know existed or get reminded of things you love or used to love but rarely listen to anymore. So here it goes:
My favourite rock guitarists
1. Rory Gallagher
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
4. Vini Reilly (The Durutti Column)
5. Mike Oldfield (in the 70's...)
6. The Edge (U2) (not in the 2000's, though)
7. Robert Smith (The Cure)
8. / 9. Lee Ranaldo / Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)
10. John McGeoch (Siouxsie & The Banshees)
Matthew Bellamy
SLASH FROM GUNS N'ROSES!!!!
Then The Edge, Jimi Hendrix...and Bob and Porl of course! :)

Matthew Bellamy
excellent choice. :smth023
my list (rather unimaginative i guess):
robert smith
porl thompson
matt bellamy
steven wilson
jeff buckley
jimmy page
billy corgan
john frusciante
tom morello
hmm... the edge
+ many others...
Both Jimi's (Hendrix & Page)
Angus Young
Steve Wilson
Dave Gilmour
Ian McNabb
Mad Bob
Porl Thompson
Gary Marx
Wayne Hussey
But the best one, by far (IMHO), is Brian Setzer.
Anyone who likes good guitar work would not go far wrong seeing this guy either with the Stray Cats or his orchestra.
Hey, check Rory Gallagher playing 'Walk On Hot Coals' (live 1974):

Rory kicked so much ass it ain't even funny!

on-topic: how could i forget eddie van halen! :smth035
(whether you liked the band or not, he's a really great guitarist anyway.)
I used to love Bill Nelson, from Be-Bop Deluxe.
I wonder if he's still around?
His guitar playing on 'Crying to the Sky' was amazing. One of my favourite tracks. :smth020

Hey, I know Bill Nelson, from his work with David Sylvian on the album "Gone to Earth". Robert Fripp plays on that one, too. Two virtuosos, no doubt about it.
Hey, cool! I like Robert Fripp too.
I shall have to look out for that album! :smth020
Here's Durutti Column with Vini Reilly playing 'Sketch for Dawn' live in 1985.

Also, a video for the studio version of 'Never Know' (this is a long slow moody piece to rival those of The Cure...)

His voice is nothing special, but the guitar playing... just beautiful.
Jimi Hendrix
Porl Thompson
Robert Smith
Eric Clapton
Steve Vai
Mark Knofler
Nancy Wilson
James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers)
Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth)
Neil Young
Jack White (White Stripes/Raconteurs)
Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine)
Robert Smith/Porl Thompson (The Cure ;))
John Squire (The Stone Roses/The Seahorses)
Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Mike McCready (Pearl Jam)
Robert Smith and Porl of course.
But at the same time:
Brian May
Jonny Greenwood

Yeah absolutely!!!!!! :smth045
How could I forget him??
Because Robert Fripp is such a great guitarist, I thought it would be a good idea to post here some examples of his art, all in a live setting. They are all instrumental pieces, but well worth the time, I think:
All acoustic, with the League of Crafty Guitarists (actually, it's just a name of a workshop combo):

Solo, electric, in a demonstration of his so-called "frippetronics":

With King Crimson, in a rendition of "Fracture" (only part 1 included here... there are no images on this one, sorry):

porl and robert of course!
jimi hendrix - big duh.
robert plant and jimmy page
alison krauss
kim gordon
