(secrets)
what happened in the cure world so-and-so many years ago, exactly today?
an album or a single was released? they played live someplace? maybe they were on tv or on radio?
something else?
post here, remind us of what took place! :D
here's to start with. today, on march 31st:
...on march 31st twenty-one(!) years ago, in 1987:
the cure was touring in south america, in argentina and brazil. on march 27th and 28th they had just played two dates in the giant maracanzinho stadium.
part of the maracanzinho concerts were filmed for brazilian tv.
some clips on youtube:
close to me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYtPC3N8DW4&fmt=18)

more info: http://www.impressionofsounds.com/1987-TV5.html
but back to exact date:
today, on march 31rd (today) they were going to play the first of the three concerts in sao paulo ibirapuera gymnasium:
http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1987-03-31.php
Melody Maker magazine published robert's tour diary later in may.
see here (http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,6099.new.html) for the link to the complete article.
about the trip to the venue, robert said it was "a strange journey". obviously the bus drive there took all day and simon and porl had become sick the other day - or, had been "poisoned by in the night by a poisoner", like robert saw it.
about the ibirapuera concert, robert wrote:
...the ibirapuera gymnasium, sau paulo, the venue for the next three nights, and we are less than happy to find the audience streaming in meaning no sounds-check.
we wander about humming ad shouting until nine and then we are on. the sound is terrible, like playing in a raging sea, but the c[r]owd don't seem to mind, and they scream away and any way until we run out at eleven.
****
..."a couple of" years later:
in march 2000, the dream tour had kicked off a few days earlier, starting from spain.
the fourth show of the tour took place in valencia on march 31st, eight years ago:

were you there perhaps? :D
on april fool's day...
2006 - the cure returned to royal albert hall after almost exactly 20 years:
http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2006-04-01.php
lovely memories from london!
(http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2006/04/04/smith372.jpg)
(i just still don't uderstand how come they had seats on the floor.)
2000, it was barcelona: http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2000-04-01.php
and of course in 1987, it was (still) hot and dreadfully sunny down in brazil (see above). ;)
april 2nd, two years ago:
remember this?

AND I WONDER WHY "ITS NOT OFFICIAL"?
MAYBE BECAUSE I DIDNT ACTUALLY DO IT?
WOW...
COULD BE EH?
ANYWAY

BACK TO THE CURE ALBUM
WHICH IS ALMOST DONE
AND I'M SURE COULD HAVE BEEN DONE SO MUCH SOONER IF I WASNT OFF IN CUCKOO LAND SINGING WITH THE JESUS FAIRIES...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

hmm i thought this might have been an interetsing topic but it looks like nobody agrees with me...
anyway:

20 years ago ( :shock:), on this day...
1989: prayer tour had just launched the day before at roskilde festival, denmark.
the first "proper" prayer tour show took place in stockholm, isstadion (later called 'hovet' - the same place where the band played last year on their 4tour)
-> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1989-05-02.php
http://www.impressionofsounds.com/prayer1.html.... and they were on all the way until september.
other performances:
1984 german tv, 'musik convoy' -> http://www.impressionofsounds.com/1984-TV10.html
one of the classic drunk performances. too bad i can't find it on youtube, robert is pretty manic in this one, fighting with the microphone stand... ;)
1992: the warm-up tour for wish tour, newport UK -> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1992-05-02.php
1996 UK tv, 'top of the pops'; the second performance of '13th' -> http://www.impressionofsounds.com/1996-TV7.html
2000: marseille -> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2000-05-02.php
four years ago, 2004, coachella -> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2004-05-02.php
+they also played shows on this date in 1980 (aberdeen), 1981 (bristol) and 1984 (manchester).
in all, a pretty much activity on this date!

Hey JB, it is interesting to know, and I like to read it. Thanks for the efforts :smth023
it's interesting to me too. i just feel too incompetent and slow to comment...
but i enjoy reading and learning :) THANKS!!!!
Interesting...
Funny how I knew a lot of dates corresponding to yesterday (London '82, Roskilde '89, St. Austell '92...), but my memory of this date was a lot more foggy. :smth017
A lot of Cure albums came out in May. An endless circle for the first 10 years or so (THOTD being an exception because the recording took longer than expected) : winter (hibernating/recording music), spring (album release/tours/promotion), summer (holidays or summer "trips"), autumn (new tour/writing). :lol:

yes of course, that's true. easy to find a list of shows to post in this topic around this time of year. but nothing bad in that i suppose.
lots of live show found on this date too, for instance:
1980-05-06 sheffield, UK --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1980-05-06.php
(unfortunately nothing much is known of this concert, apart from the date and location/venue)
1981-05-06 derby,UK --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1981-05-06.php
1982-05-06 amsterdam, NL --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1982-05-06.php
1984-05-06 portsmouth, UK --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1984-05-06.php
1989-05-06 heerenveen, NL --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1989-05-06.php
1996-05-06 paris, amphitheatre de l'opera bastille --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1996-05-06.php
2000-05-06 firenze, IT --> http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2000-05-06.php
the 1996 opera bastille show was the first of the two promo shows for 'wild mood wings', they played the whole album like in london the next day:
1. want (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KegcqxI4XcM&fmt=18)
2. club america (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjtDBnlgCFY&fmt=18)
3. this is a lie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLo4o8BlPBU&fmt=18)
5. mint car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KegcqxI4XcM&fmt=18)
5. jupiter crash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUfv7HAir3c&fmt=18)
6. round and round and round (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCVgvagVSUQ&fmt=18)
7. return (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KegcqxI4XcM&fmt=18)
8. trap (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCVgvagVSUQ&fmt=18)

since the quality in youtube isn't that good, so if you have the dvd copy then why not put it on tonight? :D
WMS is not such a terrible album after all, when compared to some other(s).... (well at least apart from those few genuinely terrible tracks, perhaps ;)).

oh how could i almost forget! definitely the most important entry for may 6th is that 32 years go...
On 6 May, Easy Cure played their first proper gig at The Rocket, a local Crawley pub! (http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/260_emoticon.gif)
Robert: "It was Sunday lunchtime and we realised Amulet were supposed to be playing that night and that they couldn't make it for some reason so we just phoned the pub and asked if we could play instead. We realised we needed to play in front of a real audience at some point so we rehearsed all afternoon and went and played. We went down quite well and they asked us back and, within two or three months, we were pulling about 300 people because there was no-one in Crawley who'd ever done anything like what we were doing. We had a really drunken following, and we were really just a focal point, an excuse for people to go out, get really drunk and smash the place up!"
"Whenever we played, we all thought it was awful - there was loads of feedback and you could never hear anything except Porl's guitar. That's the only reason we kept getting rebooked, because he became the local guitar hero!"
(from 'Ten Imaginary Years')
http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1977-05-06.php
(http://www.picturesofyou.us/photos/76-79/77-easycure.jpg)
the line-up: Peter O'Toole, Robert Smith, Porl Thompson, Michael Dempsey & Lol Tolhurst
the tribute band 'the cureheads' arranged a 30th anniversary show in railway inn, crawley (formerly known as 'the rocket') 2007.
if you want to have a look inside at the pub where the cure played their first ever proper gig, see here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCrQU1_vrww&fmt=18).
although i'd bet it's changed a lot since 1977... anyway.

one year ago, today:

http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/2008-05-12.php
it seems like only such a short time ago...
also (around) today:
i've sometimes seen may 12th is stated as the release date for 'disintegration'. wikipedia says it's may 1st. i suppose it depends on where you were since release dates can vary between different countries.
anyway, may 12th 2009 is just a perfect day for re-visiting the subject. :D
'endlich - finally!'

by the way, does anybody know why the prayer tour gig "of today", on may 12th in lille got cancelled?:
http://www.cure-concerts.de/concerts/1989-05-12.php
I don't think that show was really planned, so it didn't happen in the end. Sometimes you can find informations about the concert promoter "early plans". But no tickets were printed for this one (as far as I know), so I wouldn't say it was "cancelled" as such (it's the same for Paris July 10th 89 -all these were "options").
The concert in Boulogne sur Mer (near Lille) 12 july 89 was really cancelled though. That date appeared on the adverts and tickets were available.

one of the prayer tour shows for which a video recording exists.
which reminds me: when will the band finally release some video footage from prayer tour? it's about time...!
17 years ago part of the group (Robert, Simon, Perry) was finally hitting New York City piers after spending a week (?) on the QEII boat (crossing the Atlantic Ocean) for the US Wish Tour.

Is it true that they said they were afraid to fly?? That's why they were travelling with the Queen Elizabeth II ??
(I was reading this in a Belgian magazine called "Humo". And on the radio on Robert's Birthday someone told the same story)
Fear of flying is pretty common I think. The entire Prayer Tour and the US & European Wish Tour were done without flying (for Robert and Simon). They did go to Australia by plane in 1992 though. Since 1995 they're taking planes again (but take sleeping pills or get "wasted" to deal with it apparently (?)).
I read different reasons for avoiding to take planes back in 89/92. One was that they had a terrible flight in course of going to South America in 1987. Another was that Robert wanted to see more of countries they were crossing. Another had a pilot telling him horrible stories about his job. Maybe a combination of all of this.

indeed, a very good reminder!
the band arrives in new york on may 13th and the first show took place the next day in providence, NY.
the frensh magazine 'best' had a nice special issue out in 1992
(http://www.afoolisharrangement.com/Cure/oddities/MagazineCovers/bestofcure010192.jpg)
among other things, the magazine featured a long report from the american leg of the wish tour, covering the dates from may 14th to july 24th.
it's only available in french, unfortunately. i never saw a translation anywhere in the web. :/

one can actually read robert's own description about that here:
http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,6099.0.html
friday (april 3rd)
... he 8.30 wake-up trumpet blows. and this is where we pay! a flight at ten takes us to rio where we wait for eight fun-soaked hours in the airport lounge for a repeatedly delayed aerolines argentinas 747 for madrid.
[...]
we board the plane staggering, and endure, over the next three hours, the most horrendous flight in aviation history. it is sheer torture, and even the stewards and hoastesses drop their complacently grinning veneer.
...six years ago:
the cure appeared in the bbc 're:covered' show, performing three songs.
the live songs were recorded in riverside studios, london, on may 25th 2002 and it was broadcast later in july 7th the same year.
