Actually I would agree to place 'Standing on a Beach' among the 10 essential greatest hits albums, perhaps even at nr.1. (it was my very first Cure album, by the way). 'Galore' not so much, since it has quite a few weak songs. Another essential greatest hits compilation would be 'Songs to Learn and Sing', by Echo & the Bunnymen, which ends with one of their classics (and stand-alone single), 'Bring on the Dancing Horses'...
