Watching this supernatural drama series. Recommended!
Some I'd already mentioned in this topic:

Right now I've been watching "Narcos"!
(Based on real events of course, made in semi-documentary style, but still quite fun to watch!)
I just finished watching The Leftovers. I was luke-warm to it initially but it really grew on me and it ended up being one of the best things I've seen this year.
And it has a beautiful soundtrack by Max Richter
I'm re-watching "The Wire" and it's still excellent!
I was going to watch so many things while on holidays. But instead, I've spent a lot of time watching the insides of my own eyelids! :-D
It is now 30 years ago, when Twin Peaks first aired on German tv (well I watched it on Swiss and/or Austrian channels, but at the same time), thus I've been rewatching the pilot (+ maybe more):
Just finished watching this on Netflix, worth watching if you are into crime/police:
Lovecratf Country; it is quite fun to watch so far.
(Warning: horror elements included...)
Hm, while California is as far away from me as is the "lifestyle" of most people in this series, I still can relate to some of the persons and their situation(s) in "Californication"!
Years ago I'd watched some of it, but not all, thus I'm (re-)watching now and sometimes it's hilarious!
(Warning: vulgar language is being used in the trailer!)
Re-watched True Detective Season 1, probably my favorite series ever:

One of the best, I will certainly watch again at some point in time! :smth023
"Yellowstone" - best one I've watched this year! (Not really a TV show, as writer & director Taylor Sheridan says he filmed it like one long movie. With it, he kinda reinvents the "western" genre.)
Season 2... it's not as good as Season 1 though. While Taylor Sheridan was solely responsible for the writing & directing in S1, in S2 most episodes are co-written by him & other authors and there are several directors... It's still a good watch, but S1 was just incredibly good!!
Im watching Vikings at the moment just made it t season 4
In preparation for the final season (which I hope to get within a few weeks), I'm re-watching the whole of "Peaky Blinders" (1-5)!
Quote from: Ulrich on August 11, 2022, 10:57:29In preparation for the final season
That (Peaky Blinders 6) should be here soon, also I learned that "Yellowstone" season 3 has just been released in Germany, thus I will get it asap! "Better Call Saul" season 6 I will put on my wish list for Santa Claus, thus I should be happily watching those three well into the new year! :happy
"Better Call Saul" (final) season 6
Not a long wait now, I hear "Yellowstone" season 4 will be out in Germany in late February.
Always good to re-watch "The Sopranos" (season 2 right now):
I do agree that many characters in the series do have a real good "arc":
https://www.looper.com/1220881/yellowstone-fans-agree-jimmys-character-arc-has-been-one-of-the-best/
QuoteOne of the things "Yellowstone" is best known for is its collection of carefully crafted and morally ambiguous characters. Better yet, as the show continues on, the surviving cast members continue to reveal new layers even as new characters come and go along the way.
Someone who has been there from the beginning, though, has been Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White). While he began the series as nothing more than a petty criminal who is basically forced to work on the Yellowstone Ranch by Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Jimmy went on to show that he is a man worthy of respect and of great value to the ranch that he once despised.
Though the character left "Yellowstone" at the tail end of Season 4, that doesn't stop fans from remembering him fondly and admiring his growth over the course of the series.

Rewatching Westworld now:
(Spoiler warning: many people complain that it ends with Season 4, but I saw it as a possible ending, not a perfect one, but I could live without a Season 5...)
I finished watching Twin Peaks yesterday and..I liked it very much, I think I will watch other works of David Lynch, I really like theme of reality on the verge of sleep and vice versa
oh,I would love to watch it again, I want to go back to the cozy first season after the third season..

Twin Peaks IS one of the best I ever watched. Even though Season 2 has a few weak moments (and unnecessary side stories), I love it forever.

Well, Season 3 (The Return) and some of his movies do have a "dream-like" (or "nightmarish") quality!
Keep in mind that "Twin Peaks" was
created by Mark Frost & David Lynch. (Lynch wasn't much on the set of TP when he made his "Wild at heart" movie in 1990, which means Mark Frost was the "showrunner" for a while.)
Lynch's movie "Blue Velvet" is probably closest to "Twin Peaks" (main actor & atmosphere). I enjoyed "Lost Highway" & "Mulholland Drive" too. "Inland Empire" is a bit too confusing for me...
First I ever saw (in cinema, back then I did know nothing about him!) was his version of "Dune" (1984), which isn't too bad after all, but he didn't really like it himself.

Why not, watch it again, you'll discover many things (S3 is full of quotes & hints which date back to the first seasons).
I've probably watched it 20 times since it first aired (here in Germany back in 1991/'92) and I still notice new things!
Well I'm watching Yellowstone season 5 (part 1 - part 2 is delayed & will come 2024).
Gotta say I didn't expect too much, but so far it was great to watch & moving at times. At a funeral scene I had to cry. One episode later, at some kind of "family dinner", I laughed a lot...
https://screenrant.com/ways-twin-peaks-changed-tv-shows-forever/
QuoteThe iconic ABC show Twin Peaks redefined television in such a way that its influence is still palpable over 30 years later. When the surreal serial drama first aired in 1990, viewers had never seen anything like creators David Lynch and Mark Frost's singular vision, which was a show inflected with horror, violence, and comedy all at once.
Prior to Twin Peaks, a compelling musical score was not considered an essential ingredient for most television series aside from the theme song. But Angelo Badalamenti's moody, jazz compositions for the show were unlike anything heard on mainstream television up to that point. The atmospheric, noir-inspired soundtrack went a long way towards establishing the show's dark, offbeat tone.
Very true! :smth023
A new one to start the year with? Yeah, why not... :cool
Never been the biggest Stallone fan, but he's doing this well. Created by Taylor Sheridan (him again, he who wrote "Yellowstone" & 2 spin-offs, does he ever sleep?) and Terence Winter ("The Sopranos", "Boardwalk Empire") is also involved.
"True Detective - Night Country"
It's a strange thing, the showrunner of Seasons 1 to 3, is only named as "executive producer", while Issa Lopez wrote and directed all of it. :1f635:
Still, it is a good watch, good actors; the storyline seems a lot more "spooky" than those from the previous seasons maybe...
"Crystal Wall", pretty good so far!
https://www.zdf.de/video/serien/crystal-wall-100/trailer-crystal-wall-100
"Landman", yet another one (co-)created by Taylor Sheridan (if he ever sleeps, I guess he dreams up scripts and prints them out in the morning)!
Tragic happenings in it, but also funny dialogue.
I think I'll go with this after seeing an episode on telly (by chance, late at night):
(Nice song by Björk they chose to lay under the trailer...)
I'm generally disappointed by TV series these days. Compared to a ten years ago, the quality has generally lowered down, both characters and stories are predictable and there isn't any single clever idea worth exploring... Most are crime mysteries, frankly far too banal for me to spend my free time on.

If you watch on telly, I agree, most of those "cop shows" are predictable. Try streaming or DVD, you might find some exciting series, there are LOTS out there nowadays (way more than I can watch)...

I actually use streaming services, yet I find them boring and predictable... And too long sometimes (11 seasons of The Walking Dead anyone?)
Films are better. At least the story starts and ends. With series, they often get cancelled, so you are bound to invest your time in something which may not have a conclusion...what's the point?
Quote from: Sacha8 on August 19, 2025, 15:58:21... too long sometimes (11 seasons of The Walking Dead anyone?)
I never wanted to watch "The Walking Dead", because the topic of "zombies" has never appealed to me really (found most zombie movies utterly boring), but I watched a few episodes anyway (boring, typical for how series used to be, the same things rolled out endlessly again and again)...
There
are good series out there, you just need to find them (due to the right recommendations). And wait until their final season before watching, then you'll know they won't get cancelled!

Uh-oh, I watched some films and series (finale) which had no real "conclusion" or "closure".
(David Lynch springs to mind.)
'The Outsider'. A very interesting, strange series. Recommended.

I will!
The last TV series I really REALLY enjoyed (we are talking about five years ago, the rest I've watched since then is rubbish) is Tales from the Loop:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_the_Loop
It's a clever combination of dystopia, psychological insight and a philosophical pondering over life. Unlike many other series, it is short, one season only, and it has a clear artistic purpose, it was not done to make bucks only but to make people think. It is a slow-paced kind of story, with no action whatsoever and very slow dialogues, so forget about all those hectic NYC/LA superfast talkers or action-packed flicks, it is something quite different and special. Also, unlike many other series, it isn't based on either a novel or a podcast, but on an art book. You can find more info on the drawings here, on the artist's official page:
