'The Outsider'. A very interesting, strange series. Recommended.

Are you joking? A picture says a thousand hours. A picture of Trump with European leaders arounds his desk is short of embarrassing, if not humiliating. Foubert says it better:

European leaders rushed to Washington in numbers, desperate to be seen, desperate to be heard. They came not as partners but as petitioners, waiting for the word of one man who now holds all the cards.

Trump decided what was discussed, what was promised, what was left unsaid. Europe brought no strategy, no leverage, no vision — only a need for American approval. The presidents and prime ministers of the continent behaved less like sovereigns and more like consultants, called in to nod along to decisions already made elsewhere.

This is what Europe has become: a collection of figures with titles but no power, nations with histories but no agency. The real choices are made in Washington, while Brussels organizes paperwork to disguise its irrelevance. Europe once dictated terms to the world. Now these people waits for instructions.

Uh-oh, I watched some films and series (finale) which had no real "conclusion" or "closure".
(David Lynch springs to mind.)

I never wanted to watch "The Walking Dead", because the topic of "zombies" has never appealed to me really (found most zombie movies utterly boring), but I watched a few episodes anyway (boring, typical for how series used to be, the same things rolled out endlessly again and again)...

There are good series out there, you just need to find them (due to the right recommendations). And wait until their final season before watching, then you'll know they won't get cancelled!

Films are better. At least the story starts and ends. With series, they often get cancelled, so you are bound to invest your time in something which may not have a conclusion...what's the point?

If you watch on telly, I agree, most of those "cop shows" are predictable. Try streaming or DVD, you might find some exciting series, there are LOTS out there nowadays (way more than I can watch)...

I actually use streaming services, yet I find them boring and predictable... And too long sometimes (11 seasons of The Walking Dead anyone?)

Which is what they're doing at the moment. (Sadly Trump was needed to get through to Putin!)

And it's also why a German chancellor (among others) demands a ceasefire, because he is aware that negotiations can take long!

QuoteTrump adds that he wouldn't say Zelensky and Putin are ever going to be "best friends", but observes that the two leaders are the ones that "have to call the shots".

A call among members of the "coalition of the willing" to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine appears to have concluded, with some participants posting their reactions on social media.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says his country "welcomes ongoing efforts towards achieving a just and enduring piece, including yesterday's discussions with Washington".

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says that leaders of Canada, Japan, Turkey, New Zealand, and European countries assessed the outcomes of the Alaska meeting "very realistically".

"We all confirmed the need for continued support for Ukraine in the war with Russia," he adds.

Quote from: Ulrich on August 19, 2025, 13:17:47Who is the aggressor again?
Russia is the aggressor and Russia is winning the war, so Ukraine can continue fighting back (with a high probability of losing more territories and lives) or focus on a diplomatic option.

However, if they continue on their stance on wanting to join NATO, the war will inevitably continue. Not sure if that's what most Ukrainians want: In Gallup's most recent poll of Ukraine, 69% say they favor a negotiated end to the war as soon as possible, compared with 24% who support continuing to fight until victory:
