On a brisk and soggy evening that suited the musical mood at hand, The Cure served up a long, tightly executed set Tuesday at a sold-out Pine Knob Music Theatre.

It had been a long time coming. This summer's outing is the first U.S. tour by Robert Smith and company in seven years, and the Pine Knob date was the band's first Detroit show in nearly two decades.

One Tuesday high point came from an unexpected source: With its angled edges and surging gallop, the 1982 deep cut "One Hundred Years" provided an intense climax during the first of two encores.

At 64, Smith's distinctive, vulnerable vocals are holding strong, and he put them to effective use Tuesday on numbers such as "Charlotte Sometimes" and the spiky "Push," still sounding invested in the emotional nooks and crannies.
