I agree - Underneath the Stars would be a fantastic single!

Actually, I doubt that UtS would make a good single. It just doesn´t have that "single feeling" to it, it sounds more like an album track. Though i also have to admit that for the time being it seems that I´m one of the few that just doesn´t get the supposed greatness of UtS. It just kind of sounds like an average slow moody Cure song to me, the kind that they probably could have written in their sleep.

Now, as far as romantic ballads go, "One More Time" would have made a terrific single back in 1987... A missed opportunity, I think.

I have dismiss that criticism on the basis that it's the same argument people who dislike Going Nowhere have used.

[Yes, some of those people really do exist. No, I don't know where they live.]

Well, I don´t dislike "Going Nowhere" but I also think it is an average slow moody Cure song that they probably could have written in their sleep. And it would have been a poor single choice, also.

On the other hand, I think "The Same Deep Water as You" is a masterpiece but it also lacks the characteristics of a good single, IMO. So, it´s really not just a question of QUALITY, subjective as that might be, but also one of ADEQUACY.

And hey, maybe The Cure write great songs in their sleep. Who knows? I just don´t think "Going Nowhere" is one of them. It sounds too close to all that "Disintegration" stuff and at the same time it lacks the strong melodic hooks, the development and the poetry. Just my opinion.

the lack of development - not that i think that 'going nowhere' is an unsuccesful piece of music but i always felt that was exactly what was missing there. the song somehow always left me cold, despite (in the want of better words) having a good start.
i've always thought about there are some artists that can produce excellent "impressionistic" pieces of music, short fragile sketchlike things. yet i always felt that that was/is not the area where the cure really excells. when they go to this deep/profound area they always express themselves best by building songs with long stretching arches.
anyway, not that 'going nowhere' was a bad song, just an impression i always had about it too.

it's kind of off-topic, though. (maybe we can split the thread if the conversation catches fire. hey why not? it's been a bit too long since we had these threads about discussing individual songs.)

I'm really digging most of the new stuff I'm hearing.  I have, honestly, not listened to Underneath the Stars all the way through yet.  I'm not a big fan of live recordings so I want to save my judgment for the studio version.

That being said, I'd REALLY love for "The Perfect Boy" to be released as a single.  When I saw the band in Chicago this song knocked me out - it's classic Cure all the way (palm muted guitar in the verses, Smith's longing vocals and an impassioned theme and chorus).  Great stuff... also, I've been falling very hard for "Sleep When I'm Dead"... love the wah-wah.

"The Only One" just hasn't done it for me at all.  Really disappointed in that song, and "NY Trip", while solid, is most certainly a b-side (and one that sounds quite a bit like a b-side from Head on the Door).

**Off topic - "Going Nowhere" is good, but always left me underwhelmed.  When they played it live in Boston 2004 (when I first heard it) the version was so beautiful, plaintive and wistful that I had extremely high hopes.  I think the studio version lacks passion and the awful, awful production does not help - it just falls a bit flat.**

Hmmm, A Chain of Flowers have 'news' that the next single in July may be Sleep When I'm Dead:

>From a reliable source : "Looks like "Sleep When I'm Dead" might be the July single with a July 15th street date...not sure of b-side at the moment"<

Interesting...  :smth035

the alt version of going nowhere with a different vocal is more moving and better

It is not a bad song, no. It just kind of goes nowhere...  :-D

Anyway, another problem with it is that it simply doesn´t fit in "The Cure". Had they included it in "Bloodflowers", my reaction to it would probably be warmer.

Does sound interesting!   I really like the song so it would be cool if they did release it. :)

I was surfing thecure.com and reading this just few seconds ago...

It's a beautiful sensation listening to "the only one" finally in a studio-version!!! :D

The Dark Album !  Late 2008 - cant wait for the full thing.  Songs live sound great.  Was in Chicago

Has someone already heard this Freakshow preview?
(if so, sorry for double posting)

Thx CoF

Grazie, dear. :)  You know, a lot of people have been bashing the heck out of Freakshow, but what I've heard so far... I like! I have to hear the whole studio version before I'm willing to sign anything, but I think I may like it better than The Only One and better than NY Trip.

I quite like Freakshow.  Studio version sounds a bit better than what I have heard live.  The B-side All Kinds of Stuff well it's hard to say if I'll like it with that 30 second snippet.  Sounds interesting but chaotic!  Can't wait to hear the full version soon.   I'll be buying mine tonight and hopefully will get it by the weekend.  Seems like it's a lot more easier to get this single than the 1st, most web sites have it already listed with no "SOLD OUT" written on the listings.

:D Yes, I agree with you.
I think Freekshow sounds a bit different in this little studio-preview, so I want to wait for the full version to fully judge it.

So far, seems that this b-side too is on the same line of the previously released single. But, yes, it's really too hard to say anything having only heard 20 secs or so...Let's wait. ;)

Well, I don't think it's such good news...but perhaps it's the natural course of the singles...

I'm only saying that because for "The Only One" it was supposed to be released in the USA May 15thish and for about a week it was hard to get the single on-line & in stores do to some sort of problems with Universal.

It really wasn't sold out, I meant to say it was "OUT OF STOCK". I'm guess I'm just saying that this time around, it doesn't look like there will be a hassle from the Record Company with having "Freakshow" released on time. Looks like the single will be ready to order tomorrow without any delays.

Remember kids: you can download the single and b-side on the 12th  [before each release] from iTunes... yes I know it's a shitty lossy format but really, you wouldn't be a real super-Uber-dooper The Cure fan if you don't own EVERY SINGLE version possible AS SOON AS IT'S AVAILABLE now would you???????????????????? ;-)

LOL

I did it and I'll do it again... oh yeah!!!!

PS heard on some interview that the album is due out on Sept 13. Sure it is............
