the woman at the ticket office was very nice. as i was leaving i asked "by the way you don't happen to have any more of those...?" and pointed the poster. she said "no that's the only one we have... but tell you what: you can take it - before someone here breaks and destroys it! haha"
she made my day. :smth023

i also went to see a concert in hovet while i was there. despite what i had heard in adavance, i actually really liked this arena. the floor section is pretty small so it's not some huge open wide space without any personality. and you can see well enough from all around, even if you weren't exactly very close to the stage. the auditorium rises pretty steeply which i think also gives a sort of impression of a smaller venue than it really is. the sound was maybe not the most awesome i've heard but very decent and enjoyable nevertheless.

b/w how many cure forums are outhere??

Hard to say.  Cos I'm sure there are some in other languages we don't know about.  And folks seem to start them up all the time.  I'd take a wild guess and say hundreds!  Ok...maybe not hundreds, but it feels that way!

Actually....that would be a good idea for a topic.  We could all list the Cure forums we know about.

yup, so far not one surprise, just one or the other change in the order from the Australian tour. maybe Robert needed more time for the new album again instead of rehearsing? let's face it, cancelling this tour was impossible...
hm, maybe they introduce one or the other new song over the next weeks, it is the first show, so one cannot judge the whole tour just yet.
-> Charlotte with this lineup? hopefully not (and please no All Cats Are Grey or Cold as well)...

That would just kill it for Marika.

I don't think they'll end with that one, though.  They'll probably do the idiot pop encore followed by the old school encore.

To me it just sounds like a careful opening night. Waking up after Christmas...
I'm sure it will change everynight.
I agree 3 hours of The Cure would be heaven!!

It's probably important to keep in mind that they're not touring an album. What do bands play when they're not touring something in particular? Typically speaking, their greatest hits. Give it some time before you write them off. Imagine how wrong you could be.

Actually,  don't care for some of the non-pop songs in there...
I'd much rather hear  Plainsong/Disintegration instead of  boring Open/End opening and closing the main set.

I really hope they would play the Wailing Wall   :P

Just got back from the show. The sound was horrible!!!
Hovet is probably the venue with the worst acoustic in Stockholm-area. It always gets bassy, even though I was standing in centre of floor section! This bad I haven't experienced a concert ever since Audioslave in 2005 (bassy as hell). Shame really, cause this is the very first time I get to see The Cure live, and the bands first visit to Sthlm since 1996 (also played Hovet).

Thank japanesebaby to give us the setlist :)
It's a good setlist, nothing surprising. But i hope they will play more new
songs on this tour :) It was great that they played 3 hours.

I'm sorry MheAd that the accoustic was horrible at the venue.
When that happens it could cloud the fun.
Hope you have the change to see the band on another Concert on this tour.

There hasn't been that many concerts the last couple years...so there's some songs in there that are still fresh like  How Beautiful you are,  Jumping,  Wrong Number, Grinding Halt,  etc  which were rarely played before 2007...   plus 3 new songs...  so its not all bad.....

I'm sure they'll mix it up like they did in Mexico and then play more new songs  as the tour progresses into North America...

i think the big problem here is the lack of news about the new album...just tell us something, release date, progress, etc....that comment about being back sooner than anyone expects leads me to wonder if they'll go on a proper tour for the album when it is released, but once again, no news on when that might be....would like to still believe that march 31/april 1 rumor, but its coming up and nothing said yet...any new merchandise that might give any hints?  oh well, looks like a great show nonetheless and still can't wait to see them in chicago!

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cure finish the tour with the euro-festivals circuit, maybe thats what he refers to...big paychecks and maybe then more of the new songs will hit the setlist...they finish in USA early enough to do that.

or robert already knows they will do the festival circuit in 2009

I think whats rough is this is the first tour since I can remember where the new album didnt have an opener and a closer that sets the tone in both directions..even with THE CURE in 2004 we had "Lost" and "the Promise"....if they were going to unveil something like that it would have been tonight in stockholm..

Look at the history

2004 Lost/Promise
2000 Out of this World/Bloodflowers
1996 Want/Bare
1992 Open/End (ie 2005-2007-2008)
1989 Plainsong/Disintegration
1987 Kiss/Fight

2008 Nothing/Nothing

Basically nothing adds up with this record...its good enough to talk double CD set, but nothing stands out enough to open/close and set a tone or even play more than 2-3 new ones in the set. It doesnt add up to more than total lack of confidence in the new stuff, and "Boy I never knew" is a leftover from THE CURE sessions..Kiss me Tour had barely any old songs in it because of the 2 LP format

Hovet is probably the venue with the worst acoustic in Stockholm-area.

that is definetely not good to hear, typical problem of those Sports Arenas though, as they mostly were built without thinking about staging concerts there, too...
hopefully this will be better on the upcoming shows - Berlin is a strong candidate for horrible sound as wll, though...

I yielded at the festival circuit before, would be quite logical seeing when the US dates are finished - perfect return for July/August festivals...

setlist-wise the show is really lame, looks to me like: hey, we got this tour booked and cannot cancel it, so let's rotate the Mexico songs... the length of the shows is one thing, of course nice try with 3 hours, but to me that isn't everything. so, fingers crossed and hoping the next shows will be a bit more interesting.
the question is - what have they done during all those days between Mexico & Stockholm?

and as others said, major thanks to japanesebaby for keeping us updated!!!

I wouldn't conclude they have a TOTAL "lack of confidence" in new songs  judging from just one mere concert.  The NA tour was delayed because they wanted to  'change things around', 'incorporate new songs'  according to Robert.  So lets wait and see what they come up with....

Wasn't there an interview awhile back where Robert said that they were preparing 75 songs to rotate through the 4tour?  I don't have my spreadsheet of songs played (it's at work) but I think they've played 67 or 68 so far.  Based on that, we will get a few more surprises, but the basic layout of the tour is set.

I hope so. The first show of any tour has never had a spectacular setlist compared to later shows, but I'm just wondering if this is basically going to be a re-hash of the Asian/Australian/Mexico shows, where they just randomly pick from those songs and not add anything else.

I mean, songs like Let's Go To Bed, The Walk, Just Like Heaven, alt.end... Just think what it would be like if they were replaced with something we haven't heard in ages... or something new?

But those songs never seem to go away. I really have nothing against those songs either, but I just think it's time to retire them.

maybe Robert should bottle his blood, sweat, tears and soul and sell it. You know, THAT may satisfy some of the whiners. But then again, they would probably complain he didn't extract enough, and he needs to be shrivelled up on the floor with nothing left in his veins, just to satisfy their personal demands.
I say "good on you guys for getting your shit together and taking on an exhausting and debilitating tour"...

I honestly like it better when bands tour without an album to promote.  That way you get a strong cross section of material from all of their albums without the feeling that you're getting the new album shoved down your throat.  This, I think is much better than what some artists do where they play shows consisting of nothing but material from the last two albums. The lack of news about the new release is concerning, but I'm not going to let that hamper my enjoyment of the shows that I see.

I think we should be grateful because of our band is touring yet. Look how many bands don't tour anymore (Pink Floyd for instance). The choice of a concert setlist is up The Cure, and I personally trust what the boys are doing. They could add other songs (I love to hear "Bloodflowers" and "Mint car" :D for instance), but that's just my opinion. The band has the last word. And speaking personally, it does not matter what they play, I will follow them 8)

home again...
i'll write longer comments in my blog when time allows (hopefully already tomorrow), but a few quick things:
i've moaned about the boring setlists myself before (and i know i'll continue doing that) - and i was surely missing the kind of surprises they threw in the mexico concerts. maybe that was special, because they played three nights there - that makes a difference i think. thus it's a shame they don't play consecutive nights now anywhere in europe! anyway, despite the lack of surprises i have to say being there makes difference: up until 'shake dog shake' i was not the slightest bit bored or irritated. even 'inbetween days' sounded bearable - hmm....  haha  :-D
yet the moment they slammed 'us or them' to the table, it did take a nosedive. it took me a while to recover from that, honestly...
and seriously, if they think that 'us or them' is somehow "heavier" than 'the kiss' and that they can surpass it by playing 'the kiss' first and 'us or them' a bit after, they are dead wrong. especially at hovet, 'us or them' was just a wall or dreadful noise.
the acoustics have some part in that too: the band were VERY bass heavy. also, they were truly pretty loud. last time i was in hovet i thought i was listening to a band that tends to play pretty loud but this was surely a lot louder. i think songs that depend on porl suffered from this, like 'wrong number' etc. - i really couldn't hear what he was playing underneath all the wall of basssssssss.
i wouldn't play the bad sound on the band since i believe it would take a miracle for anyone to sound perfect and crystal-clear in that venue. there's something there that works against good sound.

anyway, i think the problem wasn't/isn't so much in the mainset but in the encores. they should really do something and change those ages old encore habits by now! the pop encore has been somewhat tedious already quite some time because there's nothing new in it and i don't think there ever will - now they've only added that freaky 'freak show' in it which makes it even worse. honestly, it's an embarrassing song and i hope it's not even included on the new album - maybe a fool's hope but a strong one...

i'd hate myself if i'd be only praising them now earth to heaven (because there would be nothing left to look for in the upcoming shows?) and i'd hate myself if i was only bashing then now (because that would mean it was useless to travel all the way over there) - and since i find i can do both i think that's actually a good thing. and thinking about it now, i find myself kind of liking the controversial feeling i have - because there's a lot to hope for BUT there was also a lot that really affected me there, truly. there was a bunch of performances that really affected me and convinced me again that this still IS the best band i know - even thought they seem to like to fall on their faces at times these days haha. (and by the way some of these performances i mean were actually performances of these songs that are often being bashed as overplayed, and which i've been bashing earlier too - but i don't mean BDC, god forbid! ;-P).
anyway, more details about that later.

a really positive thing was that robert sounded very good. of that i'm really happy about. like said earlier, simon was on fire and in all i think there was lots of energy in the performance at times, sharpness and edge.
by the way, the stage design was also cool: very sparse but very cool.
i'll try to up some pics now...

They played Blooflowers during the last Mexico show.

Mint Car... Yeah, that would work with this lineup. Wait, they don't have a tambourine player!

Marika, it sounds like your feelings toward the show were similar to mine from the Download Festival.  Not the greatest set there either (maybe a bit better than Stockholm), but it's not always about the songs Robert selects.  Seeing the band you love is always a treat, feeling the energy they're producing on stage and having a good time is what counts.  Being there truly does make a difference  ;)

btw, thanks for the pics.  Looking forward to your video footage.

if you mean this one:

that's 'jumping someone else's train'. they didn't have many video projections by the way, i think this was one of the few.
the video was show in the background during 'jumping...'.

It's been a long time, but I just wanted to add a more personal comment about the concert, nothing advanced.

This was my first Cure concert, and although I'm sure it was far from one of the best of the tour, it was a turning point for me. I went to the concert "just" liking the band, and gradually, over these past two months, I've been growing more and more into a hardcore fan. At the moment, I'm head over heels about them. Could very well be committing for life. :) Thank god Robert didn't pull the plug on The Cure in 2000 (I've heard it was close), I probably wouldn't have truly discovered them. At least not for a long time.

By the way, I've seen clips from some of the other European concerts, and I don't see why people should be so skeptical about this tour. Perhaps the keyboard should be reintroduced and more effort put into making new setlists, but overall, I don't see any major reason to grudge. On the contrary. Like someone mentioned before, tours that don't promote any new album are usually more fun, with a more varied setlist. It gives people who aren't that well acquainted with the band a chance to get to know their music better.

Furthermore, Robert's voice is as good as ever (as well as his dancing skills, hehe), and he can still rock out for more than three hours despite his age. He proves he has the energy to stick with his decision and keep the band up and going. Last but not least, I've heard several people, who have been to quite a few Cure concerts over the years, say that it's nice to see Robert so happy nowadays. Just plain happy.

Guess I'll see him around later this year, if I heard him right at the concert. Glad to still have him and the gang (Roger coming back soon?) around.

Aaaw, lovely to hear. Thanks. :-D

Unfortunately I couldn't borrow any camera for that night, so I don't have any pictures of my own. The ones I posted can be found on this site (all free to the public):

Yes, the vikings have arrived. 8)
It's great to be someplace I can share the love of this band with people, my friends will probably just roll their eyes if I start rambling about them again, even if they're fans... ;) Gotta love the old web.

Take care!

From a Swedish newspaper.

Anyone who knows when Simon died his hair dark again, by the way? I'm thinking perhaps he died it blonde especially for the first concerts in the three Scandinavian countries (+ Germany), to blend in, hihi. Simon the Swedish blonde...

haha does that mean that roma is full of communists whereas milano is... all filled with dirty bourgeouise ****? ;)

anyway it doesn't seem to affect simon's playing whether he has green or yellow hair (or maybe even no hair). but like crowbi pointed out sometime ago  somewhere here, jason should seriously pay more attention to his playing/his gear than on hair products!

hey no problem. the last thing i want is to put anyone down for posting here. we just try to keep everything as on-topic as possible, it's all about maintaining readability and helping people to find information.
anyway, for our dear edgar (i like him too): i think there's at least one book thread in 'something else' section. check it out! :D

...Yeees? :) Seriously though, almost seems like he's trying to tell us something with his hair, hehe. Very refined sign language...Oh well, typical for fans to read messages into everything your idols do...

I've recently posted a topic about the concert, asking for a recording, and no one's answered yet. You'd think when it was the first concert of the European tour that someone would have recorded it.
